Forged in Smoke (A Red-Hot SEALs Novel Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 3,951 ratings

Faith Ansell could never be mistaken for an action hero. The scientist is content in her lab, working with her team on life-changing discoveries. But when a mysterious organization captures her colleagues, she’s forced to flee for her life with SEAL Team 7.

Lieutenant Seth “Rawls” Rawlings, ST7’s corpsman, hasn’t been himself since a near-death experience in the Sierra Nevadas. He’s tense and distracted, and the team caught him arguing with himself—loudly. Despite his erratic behavior, Rawls is the only one Faith feels comfortable confiding her life-threatening secret in.

But Rawls has a secret of his own: his wasn’t the only spirit to return to the physical plane when he was resuscitated. At first, Rawls assumed the “ghost” he saw and heard meant he was having a complete mental breakdown. But the apparition soon becomes convincingly real, and what’s more, he may be the key to the conspiracy looming over them. Rawls had better act quickly because ST7’s race to save their reputations—and Faith’s life—is on.

Another great read by McCallan. Spoiler alert.

This one starts with Seth Rawls dying. Rawls is 6'4" and is currently looking at his body below him. Rawls has been a SEAL for fourteen years and he's also very dead and is watching Cos, Zane and Mac his commander trying to revive him. Rawls is also trying to figure out just what the hell is going on. How in hell can he be floating over his own body.

William Crosby Seth Rawlings is his real name. None of his teammates know he's the son of one of South Carolinas oldest families. Hell they only know him as Seth Rawls and if he has anything to say about it they will never find out his real name or his real history. A history that includes the death of his sister Sarah.

Rawls is having a hard time trying to figure out how he can be floating above his own body and be watching the others trying to revive him. Cos and Kait his fiancé take over. Kaits hands are above his wounds and Cos's hands are holding hers. There is a glow over them all and then a light hits him. He's suddenly back in his body and he's okay. Only problem is the ghost of Pachico came back with him and only Rawls can see and hear him.

Of course Rawls knows everyone will think he's crazy if he tells them about Pachico so he decides to deal with it himself. In fact Rawls is trying to figure out if he is indeed going crazy who in hell see's ghosts?? His teammates have heard him talking to himself and are very concerned. Zane, his best friend wants to help but Rawls just can't tell anyone about the ghost. Who in hell would believe him?? They will all think he's nuts.

Faith Ansell is the Doctor the team rescued and she's been working up the courage to ask Rawls, the Team corpsman, for help getting the meds she needs. She's the recipient of a heart and needs her medications to make sure her heart keeps working.

Rawls is from Louisiana and only lacked taking one more year of internship to be a doctor. He, his sister and two friends were kidnapped. His sister and her girlfriend were repeatedly raped by all twenty four of their captors and ultimately died. Rawls and his friend were rescued but the death of his sister is something he thinks he could have prevented. Nothing would have saved her and he and his friend were lucky to get out of the it with their lives. Rawls is eaten with remorse and her death is the main reason he became a SEAL.

Eric Manheim is a billionaire and a man who, along with a few other very rich men, is on the road to removing most humans from earth. His group, The New World Order, will try to remove man from the earth. Man is destroying the planet and Manheim and his group are well on the way to fulfilling their wish's.

So begins one pretty damned fine read.

This one has, Rawls, Zane, Cos, Mac, Kait, Faith, Beth, Amy her two sons Benji and Brandon, Wolf, Jude, an attack on the cabin where Mac and his men are, Manheim and his people doing their best to kill the SEAL's, Pachico, the Arapaho in the huge cavern inside Mt. Whitney who show Rawls how to question him and then get rid of him, an Amy who wants to get her sons, her son's who are tagged, her son's who once she retrieves them will lead Manheim directly to where they are hiding, Purcell who meets Amy with the boys, a Purcell who thinks he can arrest Cos, a Cos who quickly lets him know that that will never happen, the chopper that gets them back, an attack on Wolf's cabins, underground tunnels, an escape to Mt. Whitney in Alaska, a Rawls who is wondering just who is funding Wolf and the people he works for, a raid on the building where Faiths co workers are held, a raid that finds them all dead, a bomb that almost kills the team, a Faith and Rawls finding love, a Manheim who has an idea where his enemies are and Seth Rawls doing his best to figure it all out, protect his friends and stay alive.

    Five Stars.

Despite the fact that the scenarios are wildly unbelievable, I am addicted to series books , and was glad to see the new installment pick up where the last one left off.

Love the male narrator; I listen to the audio books, as I have been advised by my friends that it is unwise to try to read while driving. One book in the series had a female narrator (though she did a very good job of differentiating the characterizations), but that is never as effective when the main POV is from the eyes of the men.

I think the connection between these protagonists would have been better had Rawls's medical education been more clear from the start. Even in this particular book, it was unclear; at first mention, he was "not really a doctor" because he had not finished his internship. Then later, it was stated he had finished his third year of residency. All residents are actual "doctors"; they are pursuing a specialty at that point. Also, he says that he was 24 when his sister died, which would have been correct if he was still in his internship, but if he left after his third year of residency (as was later stated) he would have been at least 27 (perhaps a bit old to become a SEAL).

Ms. McCallan's books are plot-dense, with many twists and turns, and well-written from the point of view of grammatical structure (something sadly lacking in SO MANY books these days). However, I am a little tired of so many issues with lack of trust between "brothers" and heart rendings from all. I would like to see a little more recognition and cooperation between the couples rather than so many manufactured conflicts. Can't the required conflicts be between the outside antagonists and the couples? Can the tension not be between the self-righteous woman and the over-protective man, but with how they work together to resolve the situational conflicts?

I look forward to Forged in Embers, even though Amy Chastain has lost some ground with me due to her stubborn refusal to see reason regarding her children obviously being tagged for tracking, her confidence in her scumbag brother, and her lack of grieving for her husband, in spite of her supposedly ultra-cool professionalism. She put everyone at risk when her children were safe, just to have them with her. Bad for them, bad for everyone else. And why, when her husband, who had been forced to be useful to the evil people, but was then killed, were the bad guys still after her? Or her kids? They were all merely pawns to ensure her husband's cooperation, but once he was dead, why would they take such extreme measures to try to capture/kill them? Ginny and her son, who in the first book, are captured and held along with Amy, are never mentioned again, since her husband was offed at the end of his usefulness.

Also, where's Jillian? She and Wolf were a big subplot in the last book, but all we see here is Wolf taking off with her in a helicopter, never to be seen again. Did he dump her in the ocean? Hide her away in the secret base--though she is not seen there? Again, couples working together, respecting each other, rather than manufactured conflicts, would be more romantic and satisfying to me.

But still, I will buy the next installment, as soon as it has the narration available, because, you know, addicted to series books, and I take driving safety seriously.

Book 3 in Red-Hot SEALs, this is a series best read in order as there are plot lines—not to mention characters—carrying through all the books. These book do each come to a satisfying conclusion, not a cliffhanger to my way of thinking, but there are unanswered questions left for the next book.

Like the previous books in the series, there’s a pretty large dose of what I call mysticism here (people with the ability to get glimpses of the future, to heal, or to see ghosts, for example), if you have trouble suspending disbelief or prefer your books more firmly rooted in reality, thus might not be the series for you. These books also came out before trigger warnings were really a thing, so just be warned that the series does have mentions sexual assaults against women along with the usual types of violence you’d expect in a story about SEALs.

As a long time reader of all kinds of fantasy, I personally love the mix of military romance with the fantasy elements. There’s plenty of action and suspense to keep the story moving, and the characters are interesting, including a few love-to-hate characters as more of of the plot underlying the series is revealed. This book also has a does of Arapaho culture and language, which I enjoyed. Note I have both the ebook and the audiobook, which means I don’t have to try to figure out pronunciations as speaking foreign languages has never been in my skill set, lol.

These books really have all the elements I look: characters I care about, engaging plot lines, romance, humor, heat, and plenty of the action and suspense you expect with SEALs. Great addition to the series.

I am a massive fan of this series and was delighted to see smoke had been released,I feel like it's been forever since I read ash. Do not be put off by the series name, I know it suggests that we are going to be reading about men who should be respected but instead we are just going to hear about how hot they are and how well they perform in the sack! This is not the case and I cannot reiterate this enough! This story has more depth than a sink hole! Our heroes are warriors, deep, compassionate men who love their country almost as much as they love each other.
This series will grab you from start to finish and leaving you aching for more, we have drama, conspiracy theories, betrayal, love, respect and yeah a few hot men who perform well in the sack lol. While the series does deal with adult content it is dealt with class and not crass and it doesn't dominate the books. Also there is a paranormal element to the series but again this is not what this story is based on so if paranormal is not your thing then fear not, Trish will not ram it down your throat. I can not wait for book number four! Until then I will patiently await some more free novellas via Trish's newsletters.

Pretty good book, not an overly-trashy romance. Certainly not the next great American novel but entertaining none the less.
