Seducing the Earl of Southwell is the perfect revenge…unless Honora loses her heart.

Honora Drevenport is a young, awkward, barely acceptable young lady when she first meets the dashing Earl of Southwell and falls hopelessly in love.

After suffering a terrible humiliation at the hands of Southwell’s friends, Honora’s family forces her to marry. Years later, Honora is no longer unhappily wed but a stunning widow and the toast of London. A woman who has never forgotten the Earl of Southwell or what happened that terrible night.

Honora’s plan is simple; make Southwell fall in love with her and exact her revenge.

Note: This series is part of Dragonblade's Flame line, so this is a sexy, steamy, and scorching-hot read with multiple sex scenes. Be advised."

Miss Honora Drevenport is 17 and in her first season. Unlike the slim blondes, Honora is raven haired, green eyed and plumb. Not proficient in any of the ordinary accomplishments, she has an inquisitive mind and loves to read about foreign places like Egypt. With no gentleman paying court, except one she despises Mr. Culpepper, Honora - and ladies of all ages - are fascinated by the handsome Gideon, Earl of Southwell, an explorer. Her mother is happy that she is eager to attend any function he is speaking at hoping she will catch a husband. At a ball, Honora becomes the laughing stock of society when a bet is made that the Earl will dance with the most unattractive young lady in attendance. Thinking it a harmless private wager, he is introduced to Honora and discovers her intelligent mind and is delighted with her questions and how she is truly interested in his answers and adventures. But all that happiness turns into a nightmare when the man who proposed the bet announces it to all and congratulates the Earl on his winning. Humiliated and broken hearted, Honora runs from the ball, only to have the worst yet to come. She is married off to Mr. Culpepper - her dowry, her father's copper mines. Her husband is a cruel and greedy man as is his mother who lives with him. Honora is virtually a prisoner, not permitted to go out or have visitors. After 4 long years, he dies choking on a chicken bone and Honora is finally free. She has changed from the plumb fuzzy hair girl into a voluptuous beautiful widow. Together with her cousin Emmie they plan her revenge - first on the man who started the joke and then the Earl. But Gideon left the country right after the ball and had no idea of the suffering Honora endured. As for the one who instigated the episode, he does not even recognize Honora. But seeing Gideon again after 6 long years, and now he walks with a limp and cane, can she truly destroy the only man she has ever loved?? A wonderful story of how cruel and hurtful people are towards a young girl who doesn't fit their mold - and learning that revenge has consequences that can backfire and cause you more pain and unhappiness. A wonderful story of true love and the road to joy which is never easy or smooth! I have read this talented author backwards - starting with THE BEAUTIFUL BARRINGTONS (which is an excellent series I love). I have now bought her earlier works, starting with this one! You will never be disappointed!!

A roguish explorer and a chubby, awkward bluestocking find each other again after a devastating betrayal tore them apart. Now, nearly six years later these two kindred spirits are reunited, but the intervening years have changed them both immeasurably, and one of them has the perfect revenge in mind...

I'll be honest and say I'm not a fan of revenge romances, so I was a little leery of reading this one. I'm happy to say that I loved it more than I could have possibly imagined though. Please keep in mind that this is more a novella-length story and only about half the size of an average novel. Regardless of that I didn't feel like it was short changed in any way whatsoever.

Both Honora and Gideon were so vivid and life-like, and each was vulnerable in their own way. I completely and utterly adored them together too and thought their love was a case of soul mates and just beautiful beyond words. There are a couple of sex scenes which are quite steamy as well, but there was never a doubt in my mind that these two loved each other and the emotional connection only made their physical one that much more lovely to me.

There are a few troublemakers that I loved to hate too and I was glad to see them get a small slice of the pain they so easily and happily dished out themselves. My only issue with this story has to do with the language which seemed a touch modern at times and had a few swear words that caught me off guard. These include the f-word, b-word, God's name being used in vain, etc...

Overall I adored Honora and Gideon enough to overlook any flaws though. Their love story was truly stunning and the fact that these two were inexplicably drawn together and that neither time nor distance could alter that was unbelievably romantic to me. The things they say to each other at the end literally brought tears to my eyes too. All in all it was just a really memorable tale that touched me emotionally and left me with a big smile on my face 😊

    Setting: England, 1836-1842
Length: The story ended on page 160 and location 2046.

The problem with short books is that it tend to miss depth. The premise of the book is wonderful but fell flat for me. I didn’t feel that deep connection with both main characters. As a matter of fact I feel the MC didn’t redeem himself to me at the end. He left her twice without even speaking to her. I’m both occasions the FC is left wondering want she did wrong goes to hunt him to clear think is of… yea nah!!

I liked this book, liked the plot, and really liked the characters. I liked that Honora came to realize she still loved Gideon and she no longer wanted to get revenge on him. I recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent series starter

Honora Drevenport (that’s Drevenport not Davenport 😉) is an unfashionably plump young lady with unruly hair and terrible dress sense. Possibly worse than that, she is a Bluestocking with an unhealthy interest in learning about foreign lands, customs and all things ancient and a propensity to correct others when they get their facts wrong. Oh, and she has an embarrassingly massive crush on the Earl of Southwell.

Gideon, the Earl of Southwell, is an explorer and mapmaker and a typical, good looking man of consequence who likes to enjoy himself, including winning wagers made with his friends. When the winning of one such wager leads to the humiliation of Honora, while he is regretful, he leaves her to its consequences and embarks on a planned expedition.

Several years later, Honora returns to society as a beautiful, slimmed-down, much sought after widow and she is looking for revenge against those who caused her humiliation. Gideon reluctantly returns to society at the same time but as a changed man, a man who still remembers the girl who he felt a connection with all those years ago.

When they meet again and find they still feel a connection between them what impact will this have on Honora’s plans for revenge? Find out in this delightful story with a cast of characters you can justifiably loathe and some you will possibly come to love in future books. I’m hoping for HEAs for Emmie, Huntley and Monteith in upcoming books 🤞

A wonderful book which at various points brought me to tears and made me laugh, with 2+ detailed, on-page love scenes. Highly recommended.

Want To reiterate my last comments.. The épilogue of this book too is really rushed..like the last book by Kathleen Ayers! could have wrapped up the story better if it had been extended by a page or two more to really close up the story.

This book had an awkward, spotty, overweight young lady as its heroine. Even though it was a bit too reminiscent of some of my own teen experiences, it was a pleasure to read, particularly as Honora matures and is loved for who she is. A great read.

This ugly duckling story is sure to grab your attention - as with many of Ms. Ayers's books - this book is full of angst , drama and genuine joy and sorrow - even though the page count is approx 200 pages - I felt the impact of a longer novel !

Read on for a great series starter !

Honora and Gideon are my sexy couple !

Steam Level : oral foreplay and open lovemaking scenes 🔥🔥🔥🔥
