Forrest's #Win: A contemporary, hurt/comfort, gay romance (Recovery Road Book 1) Kindle Edition
Half a year ago I put out a want ad for a PA. The first person to respond showed up at my door with everything he owned and never left. I knew I’d hired the right person immediately. Since then, Blake has become my best and closest friend. I trust him completely because Blake never lies to me. I have no qualms asking him to help me find a casual hook-up so I can explore my preferences. We didn’t expect a rendezvous for sex would turn into a nightmare. I don’t know how I’ll ever recover, but I know I can’t do it without Blake.
Blake:
I didn’t know until I met Forrest how good a structured life could be. He lives and works by his schedule, and I keep it for him. When he asks me to put a hook-up in his schedule, I take care of it. I don’t think twice. I’ve never had any problem with any dating app, why would I expect one now? I should have been more careful. I should have vetted his hook-up before I let him go off by himself. I should have done anything other than what I did. I don’t know how Forrest can stand the sight of me, but he needs me now, and I won’t let myself fail him again.
Forrest’s #Win is a 60k Contemporary MM, Bestfriends to Lovers Romance with a well-earned Happily Ever After. Triggers include: on-page descriptive (non-erotic) rape, and stalking.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2021Hurt/comfort, friends to lovers, bi-awakening, quirky characters - this book had a lot of my favorite elements, and it delivered. From page one I loved Forrest - he’s unique and knows it, and so when he wants to explore his sexuality he has his assistant Blake schedule it in. It goes horribly wrong, and Blake and Forrest then pick up the pieces afterwards.
Yes, there is on page sexual assault. It is short (maybe a page) and I didn’t think it was overly graphic (I’ve read worse), so I was able to handle it. What follows is a long road of recovery, but it was, thankfully, all moving forward from there. Yes, Forrest struggles. Yes, Blake feels guilt. But they both seek therapy and work together to get through the trauma.
I wondered as I read how it would transition into a physical relationship between MCs after the assault, but I felt the author handled it very well and it was organic. I loved how these characters came together. There were times their conversations sounded like a therapy textbook, but that is because the characters ARE in therapy and they are trying to use the tools provided to them. Their progress and their budding romantic relationship were beautiful and heartfelt.
There is some added drama for the latter part of the book. The reader might need to suspend some disbelief there, but it added conflict to the plot and the characters handled it together, which was my favorite part. There are no big miscommunications or silly breakups, which is my least favorite thing in a romance.
Overall, I loved the characters and how their romance came about, and they will stay with me for quite awhile.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2021Forrest is a very intelligent man that needs very strict structure in his life or everything falls apart. He put an ad out for an assistant and hit the jackpot with Blake. They get along perfectly and Blake keeps him going day to day. When he asks Blake for help testing out his sexual preferences Blake is all for helping him. He makes a profile for Forrest on Grindr. Within minutes he gets a response from someone who can meet up immediately. Neither Forrest or Blake know that this is going to turn out so horrifically.
Blake moved to town for a relationship that didn't work out. He was homeless without any money when he sees Forrest's ad. He thinks it's a perfect solution. He excels at keeping Forrest's life on track and doesn't mind his idiosyncrasies. He thought Grindr would be safer than a bar pick-up; now he's feeling guilty for what Forrest is going through.
This is a very good story about what a person that's been assaulted/raped goes through. It's very emotional and heart wrenching. It will tear your heart out. You will have feelings throughout the spectrum. With help from Blake, Forrest slowly heals and is able to have a life he never thought he'd have. Forrest's rapist doesn't get the punishment he deserves but he does get something. There's a little stalking going on that shakes up the story and adds to the guys happy ending. The supporting characters are all useful to the story. There is few notable errors in the writing. I highly recommend this book. It's not an exciting or easy romance but it does have a great story.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2023I absolutely adore Forrest and Blake! From the way they meet, to Blake being everything that Forrest needs as he travels the journey of the survivor. I can’t say enough about how good these two are together.
In spite of the trauma Forrest goes through, with the help of a therapist, he and Blake manage to maintain a healthy relationship. Over the course of recovery their relationship morphs from best friends to something fulfilling for the both of them. Their love is steadfast throughout even as it changes. There’s no angst surrounding the bi-awakening which is a relief. I think the added stress of that would have taken away from the healing process for both of them and ultimately made things more difficult.
There is a slight D/s element, but it’s mainly a dominant tone to scenes rather than any discipline. There are zero spankings.
I highly recommend this book, but if you have any triggers related to SA, then read this book with caution. Your mental health is more important than any story.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2024"Forrest's #Win" is a book I've put off for a long time. I knew there were some seriouls difficult things involved with SA and recovery and I wasn't emotionally prepared to read it. Then I was and it is beautiful. It is a story that starts with building the background and friendship of the two main characters. It sets a firm base needed later in the book and shows who they are in the "before" period. The attack is on page and difficult to read and detailed, but it is brief and earlier in the book. There is a lead up period so it's a part that can be skipped because the book is more focused on the "after." Just take note that this scene does show Forrest's thinking about what is happening and it relates to his feelings later in the book.
There are a lot of great things in this book. The way the characters come together to heal and use what they both learn in therapy, is great. the language can be a bit text book with their conversations, but the way they speak is a new way for them to have open communication and at this point these are new ways for them to express their feelings so the language is going to be a bit formal.
The best thing about this book is that the characters are changed because of the attack but they are still themselves. I have read a lot of books where a character is assaulted and who they are at their core is completly changed. They basically become completly different people. Forrest and Blake do change but their core selves in the same. They grow into a strong partnership and their journery is at time very difficult but also beautiful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard reading of a great, gentle story
People who have problems with reading about rape should not read this book. The situation is not used as a kind of "painporn", it's only a short scene. The rest of the book is a very kind and gentle description of the evolving relationship of the two main characters. I have a problem though with the decision of the author not to involve the police.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story
The way the relationship between Blake and Forrest moves from friendship into lovers and partners is beautifully written.
Due to a failed relationship in a new town, Blake answers what he thinks is an ad for a roommate. What Forrest needs is a keeper. As an amazingly gifted individual, he needs help with the tasks of day-to-day living. Blake becomes Forrest's assistant and best friend.
When Forrest's first hook-up turns into a nightmare, Blake supports Forrest through the horrendous aftermath. The two of them journey through the recovery together becoming committed partners.
I received an ARC copy of the book for review, but all opinions are my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story
This book has a trigger warning so make sure you read them before starting .I loved the way Blake just accepted Forrest from the start when the first meet and how they both just fit together as friends. Then both working to heal. And move on to lovers I loved this book from start to finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it from start to finish!
Wow! What an amazing read! This author is fast becoming a new favourite. This book had some delicate topics, and they were handled with respect and compassion. I'm no expert myself, but it seemed like a lot of research went into how Forrest and Blake dealt with the aftermath of Forrest's assault. The road to recovery isn't easy, and differs for each person I'm sure, but how their forward and backward steps were portrayed seemed realistic and authentic for who they were.
Character wise, I couldn't help but love both Forrest and Blake. Forrest came across as very much on the spectrum for me - some of the conversations and his reactions to them were very Sheldon Cooper-esque, and I found myself reading the book with him in mind, and everything made so much sense! Blake was such an amazing support for Forrest. A protective and nurturing soul, he always seemed to have Forrests best interests at heart.
The storyline and worldbuilding flowed smoothly, and I found myself not wanting to put it down. It didn't have any major cliffhanger moments, but was just one of those books that pulled me in and didn't let me go. I felt invested in a HEA for Forrest and Blake, and loved how the book wrapped up.
Definitely a book I would recommend, however do heed the trigger warnings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Held my interest.
3.5 stars.
I realise that Forrest has to live his life in a well-ordered and predictable manner (even his speech pattern is calculated and precise) and that Blake has to accommodate his actions to fit Forrest’s needs, but that does make for a rather clinical read. I did enjoy the concept of the story and I liked seeing how hard Forrest works to recover from the trauma that he experienced, but I would have loved to feel emotionally involved and to ‘feel’ their emotions. Sadly, I don’t think the writing properly conveyed that. There were a few minor grammatical errors, but not enough to detract from the story.
Blake does make some faux pas along the way that cause Forrest some minor distress but overall Blake does a remarkable job in understanding and in helping Forrest to return to his ‘norm’ and to regain his life… and to begin to explore his sexuality.
All in all, this is a very good story, albeit with the above niggles, although other readers may well not have those concerns. Of course there is more to the story than that and there is another issue that challenges them, but it was a good insight as to how two loving and caring men come to terms with the issues before them and work their way through them. And of course, they do get their well deserved happily ever after.
