- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2025Chase Austin starts a new series with Axel Monk, a hired assassin that works for an organization called "The Conglomerate". This series follows Axel Monk who apparently is working independent of “The Conglomerate” but plot lines are a little fuzzy if you’re trying to follow this series and an extension of the Axel Monk series.
Axel Monk (known as “Freelancer” in this series) is given an assignment to remove a Mexican cartel leader. What he doesn’t know is that there is a mole somewhere in either his command structure or in the cartel command structure whos mission is to remove Monk permanently. Nothing is as it seems and trust is something that is in very short supply. The mission has to be completed but little help is available.
Very enjoyable easy read, with short chapters allowing you to easily stop, after just a few pages. The plot line was interesting and flowed quickly. This is a good summer beach read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2025Working for the Conglomerate as an assassin can be a demanding job, but when you are the Freelancer you are asked to task for the most difficult, nearly impossible hits imaginable. And in this case, Monk has been given the hit on El Tigre, the largest cartel boss in all of Mexica. El Tigre is so nervous about his security that he has layers upon layers of guards and security personnel. This is, of course, with good reason, as he has control of two thirds of Mexico's drug and crime business.
Monk has to figure out how to get through three layers of security just to get to the final layer to see El Tigre. Since the man himself never goes out in public or has socials events, Monk must find a way to get to El Tigre. Monk also soon finds out that he has another layer to deal with. A layer that takes the form of a mole, but he can't determine if the mole is from his side or from El Tigre. Since Monk is using an alias of an arms manufacturer to get into El Tigre's inner circle this is an obstacle to eliminate.
Apart from the mechanics of the book, any reader who enjoys a thriller, you'll not be disappointed with this one. you will be on the edge of your seat more than a few times, there's the part about the mole and you will think you've figured out who it is and you'll be wrong, it had a couple heart-pounding scenes that upped my pulse a LOT and there was a touchy-feely scene towards the end. So, there's something here for everybody. Notice, I didn't tell you a whole lot about all the stuff that went on in the book. That's cause I want you to read the book!
This book was an ARC provided by the Author and I am voluntarily writing this review of my own free will.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2025An action-packed story of a contract to eliminate a Mexican drug cartel leader, with multiple twists and turns involving a potential traitor in the Conglomerate causing Monk to be on the back foot as his next move always seems known to the opposition. Then there is potential for a cartel war and a possible government coup. Despite betrayal and major injuries Monk perseveres until the contract is fulfilled, and one final twist comes to light when a person who has assisted Monk throughout surprises him with the real relationship.
An exciting read with Monk almost supernatural with injuries received along the way.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2025This is a great start to a series. It grabs you at the start and doesn't let go till the end. Monk known as the freelancer has been assigned an almost impossible mission in Mexico. It looks impossible and then to add to the complexity he thinks there is a traitor. The book lets you see things from different perspectives and it adds to the excitement.
This is one book you won't put down and you will enjoy it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2025Leaving this review voluntarily as a member of the ARC Team. This book simply does not disappoint. I have read a number of books with similar characters and story lines, but have to say Monk is among my favorites. He is not a super human inthat he gets hurt and bleeds, get tired, stretched to the limits of his endurance, trusts others, gets betrayed and that is all in a days work. This story pits a shadow operator from the Conglomerate against a Mexican Cartel head honcho and members of the Mexican government. He is not sure exactly what he is up against in the heavily fortified compound of El Tiger and who he can really trust. The story moves very rapidly and the author does a good job developing the characters and the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 20254.5 it’s an entertaining page turner. Good read if you enjoy thrillers, suspense, action and unique characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars An assignment to kill, just who is one step ahead of Monk, and will he succeed?
Freelancer, a man, a Ghost, is sent to Mexico, tasked by the Conglomerate to eliminate El Tigre, the head of the largest cartel in the country.
A story of friends, betrayal, intrigue, and violence.
Does the Conglomerate have a traitor in its midst? Everywhere Monk goes, someone appears to be one step ahead of him. Attempts to sabotage his mission is making things much more difficult for Monk.
Is there a coup on the horizon? Just what is going on? A former cartel, which ruled in Mexico before El Tigre managed to take power, wants its position back.
In this world, everyone could be an enemy.
Right to the end of this book, the surprises, and shocks, keep on coming.
I cannot wait for, well I guess I must, the next episode in this series.
Another great book. Keep them coming Chase Austin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Freelancer at his best.
This was definitely one of those storylines that had me hooked from start to finish, full of intrigue and betrayal from friends and even the people who sent the Freelancer in to Mexico to kill El Tigre the cartel leader. I lost sleep because I couldn't stop reading it and was convincing myself to read just another page which turned into another chapter which then turned into another 3 or 4 chapters before I could finally put it down.
