Frostbound: The Dark Forgotten Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 64 ratings

Every dog might have his day, but the hellhound guards the night …

As a snowstorm locks down the city, more than the roads are getting iced. Someone’s beheaded the wrong girl, and vampire-on-the-lam Talia Rostova thinks it was meant to be her. Now she’s the prime suspect in her own botched murder—and the prisoner of her smoking-hot neighbor.

Lore is a hellhound, bred to serve and protect, so he’s not freeing Talia until he’s sure that she’s the prey and not the hunter. You’d think a beautiful woman in his bedroom would be a good thing, but trouble-prone Talia has run afoul of someone more sinister than your average lunatic killer. An ancient Undead is wreaking vengeance on the city—and on her—and Lore will have to go far beyond a stake to put him back in his grave.

All Things Urban Fantasy says Frostbound "is the perfect blend of urban fantasy and paranormal romance. Rich and complex magical worldbuilding, characters with equal strength and depth, and a romance that creates as much heat as it does emotional intensity."

A snowstorm has locked down the city, the roads are getting iced and someone has beheaded the wrong girl. Now Talia Rostova is the suspect in her own murder. Talia has afoul of someone more sinister than your average lunatic, an ancient undead is wreaking vengeance on the city and Lore will have to go far beyond a stake to put him back in his grave… This energetic addition to The Dark Forgotten series enthralls readers from the very beginning as it starts off evil in the air and a fight and just keeps on going and going. The characters are strong, vivacious and have a wonderfully stimulating chemistry that rocks the pages of this romance to its very foundations but it does have a couple of major obstacles – one of which is the fact that hellhounds and vampires are typically enemies which means Lore’s pack isn’t so accepting. Lots of emotional turbulence flows throughout the story adding depth to the characters and ensuring that readers can really get to know Lore and Talia and the passion is hot and steamy. The plot is fast paced and full of thrilling suspense, stunning excitement, non-stop action and a shiver inducing enemy that readers don’t want to miss a second of. An upcoming election is turning the supernatural world upside down and evil is stalking Talia and the city bring with some surprising twists that keeps readers on their toes. With a heartwarming conclusion this very entertaining story is one that readers can’t put down once they start reading it.

I met Lore in a previous book (maybe two—it’s been a while), but Talia was new to me. Although both she and the heroine from the previous book are both kick-ass (actually not a character-type I really appreciate), they are very different, with different backgrounds and motivations. Aside from the sizzling chemistry and sparse but excellent love scenes, the continued great paranormal world-building and exciting plot; themes of bigotry, the redemptive power of love, and that of both blood- and found-family are woven throughout the series are especially strong here. I was sad to think the series was over (aside from a couple of short stories which I also don’t favor unless they’re a prologue or bridge). But lo and behold, there’s another novel-length book coming out soon (will likely be out by the time I get this posted). Thank you, Ms. Ashwood! Oh, and an extra thanks for NOT writing these first-person.

REVIEW ORIGINALLY POSTED AT BITTEN BY BOOKS

Lore is more than an Alpha hellhound. He's an educated, caring, gorgeous badass who'd do anything for the people he cared about, or lived next door to, or, hell -- even accidentally bumped into on the street. He led his people out of the Castle, the magical prison where demons, dragons, and trolls are common place but the sun hasn't shown in longer than most can remember. He helped build a community for his fellow hellhounds, a place where they can use their talents and etch out some semblance of a normal life. All in all, he's a part-demon saint with a hero complex.

Enter Talia Rostova, former Hunter, current rogue vampire -- and wanted suspect in the murder of her cousin. Lore finds her at the scene of the crime, handcuffs her to his bed, and vows to protect her. This, naturally, confuses Talia. Being kept under lock and key isn't new to her, but the kindness...from a male? Yeah, not something she's used to. Together, Talia and Lore search for her cousin's real murderer while fighting an insane sorcerer, a real bitch of a hellhound (pun intended), and their growing attraction to each other. And to think, Lore thought life outside the Castle would be easier!

Frostbound by Sharon Ashwood is all that is good and right in the paranormal romance genre. Sharon is a master of her craft and one of my few auto-buy authors currently published. She's developed one of the richest worlds I've read, and continues to outdo herself with each installment. In Frostbound, not only does she give us a killer romance, bone-chilling suspense, and some seriously deranged bad guys, but we get an in-depth look at hellhounds - what they really are, what their purpose is, and, most importantly, how they feel about mates. After reading Frostbound, I want a hellhound of my own!

What I love about the Dark Forgotten series, and especially Frostbound, is the side characters. I fell in love with Darak as soon as he stepped onto the page, and I'm dying to uncover more about Joe. I want to know how Mac and Connie are doing in the Castle, how Holly and Alessandro and Ashe and Reynard are handling family life, and what Prince Miru-kai is up to. I sincerely hope I get the chance to revisit this world and, most importantly, Sharon gets the chance to write about them.

Fabulously cheesy and romantic words from my favorite hellhound:
"It means we share something deep. It means I'll always find you, no matter here you go. I'll walk at your side. I'll sleep beside you and watch over you. I'll walk the passages between life and death to come back to you."

I always look forward to the next Dark Forgotten novel. I enjoyed Frostbound, but it took me awhile to warm up to it. There was a lot of backstory in the beginning on both Talia and Lore. After about 150 pages, thats when the action shook me like a dog, and did not stop. Talia a newly turned vampire, comes home to find her roommate brutally murdered. Lore is an alpha hellhound living in the same building who stumbles on to Talia after the murder. Lore is not sure of Talia's innocents, so begins the investigation into who is after Talia. I love the world of the Dark Forgotten series with it's vampires, hellhounds, demons, all mixing with the humans. I enjoyed the build up of romance between Lore and Talia. Lore is so tender towards Talia and Talia deserves a huge protective hellhound by her side. Once this story got going, I couldn't put it down. This series is not over saturated with sex scenes. Frostbound has a more urban fantasy feel with a twist of romance in it. If anyone is new to this series, I would definitely start at the beginning.Ravenous: The Dark Forgotten
