Fur Ball Fever: Hilarious, Heartwarming & Hot Romantic Suspense with Animals & Second Chance Romance (The Fever Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
★★★★★ "A fur-filled, hilarious, sexy mystery you'll LOVE!"
★★★★★ "Unique & fun romantic suspense makes for an entertaining read."
An impulsive pet spa owner loses her elderly client's prize pooch ...
After a lifetime of impetuous mistakes, Jersey Shore pet spa owner Grace Donnelly outdoes herself when a client's prize poodle, a shoo-in to win the annual Fur Ball, goes AWOL while in her custody. With money, careers, and lives in jeopardy, Grace is not afraid to strap on the leather to go undercover in a fetish club looking for clues. Too bad her helpers consist of an aging hippie aunt, a renegade schnauzer, a drag queen, and a dominatrix or two. Worst of all, the only man truly qualified to help is her former flame, the most domineering male on the eastern seaboard.
A smokin' hot bodyguard has his own dangerous agenda ...
Texas-born security specialist Nick Jackson faces his worst nightmare when Grace's amateur investigation nearly blows his covert operation. Unless he nails the con-artist who scammed his home-town's senior citizens and whacked a witness, his homicidal granddaddy will take justice into his own liver-spotted hands. To salvage his case, his sanity, and his ex-lover's velvety skin, Nick joins forces with the sassy crusader who rubs him the wrong way--and so many right ways too.
Together, they encounter an explosion of murder & mayhem...
Action bounces from the upscale Shore community of Saltwater Estates to a beach harboring washed-up corpses, a yacht no honest preacher could possibly afford, and the bawdiest nightclub in Atlantic City. With the Fur Ball rapidly approaching and hazards multiplying like bunnies, will Grace find the missing poodle in time, and can Nick nail the con-artist before his granddaddy does? EXCERPT
Nick must have noticed her glance, because he said, “There’s not much time. We need to get out of these cuffs.”
“Sure thing. I’ll start gnawing off my hand.” Skewered by his implacable stare, Grace said. “Right. You’re angry. I get it. I messed up tonight. A teensy bit.”
He closed his eyes briefly, as if in pain.
A guilty chill chased down her spine. “Okay, it was the dumbest move of my life.” If not for her presence on board, Nick would have been long gone, and out of danger.
His breath hissed through his teeth a couple of times. “We won’t discuss this now. You’re going to unlock us.”
She breathed out one long, slow exhale. “You carry lock-picking tools?”
His teeth gleamed briefly, but she doubted it was a smile. “Only when I break and enter. Luckily she missed them when she patted me down.”
“She was probably concentrating on a different set of tools.”
He clearly wasn’t amused because he said, “Don’t push your luck, Gracie. For your information, there really was a gun in my pocket. They confiscated it along with a knife and my cell phone.” He bent one knee and extended his leg awkwardly. “Can you reach my shoe?”
She strained to reach with her free hand. The handcuff bit into the tender flesh of her chained wrist. No matter how hard she tried, his leg was out of range. “Move closer,” she said.
Grunting, he twisted his body to one side and lengthened his leg while she stretched her arm until her good shoulder was ready to pop out of joint. Gasping, she touched his ankle with one finger, then another. Using her fingertips, she worked the plasticized packet of tools loose.

Review
"... I really enjoyed this book and the writing style of Maureen Fisher. This was a really funny book and I found myself laughing out loud at times (especially with how Aunt Beth was).
I recommend this book to mystery readers out there, animal lovers, and readers who want a good laugh. You'll definitely enjoy this funny, mystery book." - Book Lovin' Mamas
About the Author
Born in Scotland, I emigrated to Canada at the tender age of seven. Years later as a University of Toronto graduate, I convinced the federal government to hire a Fine Arts specialist as a computer programmer. After three years of bits, bytes, and dumps (probably not what you're thinking), I graduated again, this time to full-time homemaker and mom, raising two wonderful sons. Plunging back into the business world, my second husband and I started a management consulting company. This marriage survived because my husband and I pledged never to work on the same project again. Ever.
After a century in the consulting world, I grew weary of wearing snappy power suits, squeezing into panty hose, and fighting rush hour traffic. I made a life-changing decision. I wanted to write books. Not dry, boring, technical treatises, but fresh, funny romantic suspense novels. How hard could it be? Thousands of authors did it every year.
Always an over-achiever, I quit my day job, attended a one-week seminar on writing a novel, read a couple of how-to books, joined the Ottawa chapter of RWA, and plunged right in. Learning can be a humbling experience, but I persevered. I slaved. I revised. I learned. After twenty-five rejections, countless workshops, six-re-writes, and two first-prize wins, my efforts finally paid off with the sale of my first book.
My husband and I live in Ottawa where I volunteer for an addiction family program, play bridge, bicycle, hike, square dance, read (naturally), and slave over my computer to improve my writing skills.

About the author

I'm an author of funny & furry adventures & misadventures, guaranteed to tickle the funny bone, lift the spirits, & warm the heart! All my books contain characters you can relate to, an animal or two, and always romance of varying quantities and heat levels along with tons of humor. As Charlie Chaplin once said, “A day without humor is a day wasted.”
Transplanted from Scotland to Canada at the tender age of seven, I'm a voracious reader, community volunteer, bridge player, yoga enthusiast, seeker of personal and spiritual growth, pickleball enthusiast, and infrequent but avid gourmet cook. As an escapee from the I.T. arena, I love to hike, bike, and travel, mostly with my husband and, occasionally, alone. I have swum with sharks in the Galapagos, walked with Bushmen in the Serengeti, sampled lamb criadillas (don’t ask!!!) in Iguazu Falls, snorkeled on the Great Barrier Reef, ridden an elephant in Thailand, watched the sun rise over Machu Picchu, and bounced from Johannesburg to Cape Town on a bus called ‘Marula’.
Some quotes:
“You are a great writer, scratch that you are phenomenal. The way you have projected each and every character is remarkable. Vivid description make you visualize the book like a movie. For me it’s a must read. And yes, last but not the least, I will surely buy your other books after I finish my exams.”
"Maureen combines action, adventure, romance, mystery, and an often LOL sense of humor in her page-turning novels. They are the perfect additions to your electronic libraries, like da rum and da coconut in your piña coladas."

- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2011Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis laugh-out-loud, sizzling hot story had me hooked right from the start and didn't let go until the end. The chemistry between Grace and Nick was amusing, hot, exasperating and thoroughly enjoyable. The dogs added so much fun and personality to the story that I can easily see dog lovers going for this book in a big way. The "investigation" kept me guessing and the situations Grace managed to land herself in kept the story interesting and engaging. My favorite character was dear, crazy Aunt Beth. What a hilarious addition to an already fun read! Maureen Fisher is a very talented writer and I'm glad to have found my way to her books!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2012Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFur Ball Fever is a fun story. Buckle up for a wild ride. Grace is a feisty, independent heroine, although at times she's a little too headstrong and takes unnecessary chances. Nick is a great hero, strong, loving, and totally in love with Grace although he fights it. He thinks Grace is too much of a handful and is always getting herself into trouble. He's right about that. I laughed all the way through. I loved the eccentric characters, the bondage club, Grace's hippie aunt. There were times when Grace bothered me because she was almost a caricature of a dizzy female. The sex scenes were hot though and very well-written.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed this novel because it involved a good romance story that was part of the overall action. It was actually a sweet romance story and I liked the two main characters - Grace Donnelly and Nick Jackson. One of the things I really hate about many romance stories is that often the main characters are so annoying that you really don't care if they end up together. The trouble with romances is that there has to be a reason to keep the lovers apart for a good part of the story or you have no story. My least favorite method is to make the lovers both headstrong, feisty, stubborn or whatever you want to call it. They are just too stubborn to admit their feelings for each other.
In FUR BALL FEVER, the issue that kept the couple apart was that Grace could be too reckless and Nick worried too much about her to handle it. Grace was reckless, but it was often in an effort to help other people so she came across as quite likable. Nick's problem was that he was worried about her, and that made him likable as well.
In addition to the main characters, there was the delightful character of Aunt Beth who was an oddball stoner. In reading this book, I felt like I was reading something new. I didn't feel like I had seen these characters a million times before.
One flaw I noticed in this book was one that I am quite guilty of myself. Some scenes went on way too long and I found myself skimming some parts. Sometimes you love your characters so much that you go on too long and you need an editor to tell you when to scale back.Sometimes it's tough to cut your work down, but it's vital to keep the story running at a good pace.
Overall, I enjoyed this story very much and highly recommend it for a fun, entertaining read.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNot just a romance, or a mystery, but complex characters coming to terms with each other, and the complex mysteries. Oh, and dogs. Even my cat loved it, when I laid in bed reading. I truly suggest this book, you will love it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars SIZZLING AND SEXY!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIn this great and hilarious mystery, we meet Nick, hunky Security Director of a gated community, Saltwater Estates, and the heroine, Grace Donnelly, four months since their sizzling romance has crashed. We follow a life-and-death case consequent upon a break-in at Grace's home, involving the disappearance of Miss Coco Chanel, a poodle which was last year's Fur Ball winner, and which Grace had been entrusted with to look after. Ruby-Pearl, the nonagenarian owner, will return in 6 days, and her dog has already been entered in this year's Fur Ball. An attempt is made on Nick's life, engaged as he is in a dangerous undercover operation. There are a host of characters from bent preachers to gangsters to Nick's womanising brother, from submissives to dominants and Gracie's dad. With the aid of her aging hippie Auntie Beth, Grace goes on the hunt for Coco and other missing dogs, interviewing and trailing suspects, visiting a sado-masochistic club, coming across a washed-up corpse, and a myriad of other adventures. The sexual tension between Grace and Nick animates the whole story, dealt with in a mix of titillating humor, comic encounters and no-holds-barred erotic, passionate scenes. The story rattles along at a cracking pace, witty, exciting, cheeky and very, very sexy. Not just the action, but the dialogue itself sizzles. I was hooked from the beginning. A wonderful mix of action, humor, sex and suspense.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Killer Combo
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen I picked up this book, I was aware that I was walking into a triple threat but I had no idea just how much of a threat it would be.
Right from the very beginning, the comedy was evident and was placed at just the right moments. Nothing is as realistic as a love story being entangled with comedy because that is how life and love should be and Maureen delivered the realism in spades. Add to that the mystery that needs to be solved and the triple threat is complete.
This was a very well put together novel and I found myself loving it from word one right until the end. If you're looking for a love story mixed with a good mystery and situations that will tickle your funny bone than this book is definitely for you.
Absolutely phenomenal read :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Sexy and funny: a winning combination
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI don't usually read romance, but I met the author and she was so smart and sassy I decided to buy Fur Ball Fever. I wasn't disappointed. The basic premise is a whodunnit, as in who stole the heroine's show dog. From there the book raced along from one sexy romp to another. And what's even more difficult to achieve, it made me laugh. I think my fave was when the heroine went undercover in the kinky sadomasochistic nightclub! Escapist fiction in every sense of the word. Highly recommended.
