About the author

Sally Spencer is a pen name, first adopted when the author (actually called Alan Rustage) was writing sagas and it was almost obligatory that a woman's name appeared on the cover (other authors like Emma Blair and Mary Jane Staples are also men). However, Alan uses James Garcia Woods as his pen name for the mysteries set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War.
Before becoming a full-time writer, he was a teacher. In 1978-79 he was working in Iran and witnessed the fall of the Shah. He got used to having rifles - and, one occasion, a rocket launcher - pointed at him by both soldiers and revolutionaries, but he was never entirely comfortable with it.
He lived in Madrid for over twenty years, and still considers it the most interesting and exciting city he has ever visited, but for the last few years he has opted for a quieter life in the seaside town of Calpe, on the Costa Blanca.
His first series of books were historical sagas set in Cheshire (where he grew up) and London. They were very popular with his English readers, but his American readers find the dialect something of a strain.
He has written twenty books featuring DCI Woodend (a character based partly on a furniture dealer he used to play dominoes with) and thirteen (so far!) about Woodend's protegé Monika Paniatowski. His DI Blackstone books are set in Victorian/Edwardian London, New York and Russia, and the DI Ruiz books have as their backdrop the Spanish Civil War.
Alan is a competitive games player who likes bridge and pub quizzes. It is only by enforcing iron discipline that he doesn't play video games all the time.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2019Loved this book, was very hard to put down. Beth just can't seem to catch a break. She lives paycheck to paycheck and still can't catch up. Her husband committed suicide two years ago. Unknown to her she has a stalker who watches her every move. Soon this stalker begins to murder anyone that does Beth wrong. Then he kidnaps her. Can the detective that is in love with her find her in time? There is a big twist at the end I didn't see coming.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2017She has a stalker .. she just doesn't know it. Beth Baker lost her husband to suicide. She's now trying to raise 2 children on her own. She's a junior partner in a law firm that is not listed in the Top 10.. nor even the TOP 1000... when it comes to clients.
She has the same issues a lot of us have. What to do when the roof leaks ... where is the money going to come from? Other bills keep her mailman busy. She's been turned down by the back for a loan. She's losing her cases, because let's face it ... her clients are not all fine upstanding citizens.
But one day, things seem to be changing for the better. The janitor at work offers to fix her roof .. no charge. The bank calls and tells her they've changed their minds ... the loan is hers. She's winning more cases in court.
But then .... a car cuts her off in traffic. Later that man is involved in a horrible car accident. She's accosted by three members of a gang .. later their headquarters are destroyed and all but one of their members is dead.
His mission is to protect her, and if, in the process, other people are hurt – or even end up dead – that is fine with him. He is called The Angel.
Warning bells are sounding in the offices of the Chief of Police and in turn, the District Attorney. Why is Beth winning more cases in her capacity of defense attorney? Cases that she should never have won .... missing witnesses, witnesses that change their minds.
Is she somehow manipulating these witnesses?
That's what Detective Sam Brody and his partner want to know. And as they investigate and toss around some theories, they had no clue that the Angel was also watching them.
This was an engaging book ... it has the feel of an older crime procedural. Sam and his partner don't exactly follow the rules when interrogating people, although they do stop short of producing a wet hose. Beth is a solid character .. a single woman just trying to make it ...
The reader has a choice of several suspects.... guaranteed to keep you guessing until the very end. All in all, this is an entertaining read.
My thanks to the author / Endeavour Press / Netgalley who provided a digital copy of this novel. The opinion(s) expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2017I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. I really enjoyed this book. There were so many possible suspects for the "Angel" that I just stopped guessing and enjoyed the roller coaster ride. I really liked everything about this book, great characters, lots of action and suspense. I highly recommend this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sally Spencer does it again
I enjoyed this book, despite it being set in America, which is not an area familiar to me. It kept me interested throughout, wondering about the denouement. Beth's husband has committed suicide, and she has to try and raise a family and carry on with her flagging law career. Things are not going well at all with mounting bills and loosing cases she is getting desperate Suddenly thing start to improve, but there isn't any logic behind her change of fortune, so are things as good as they seem? The title of the book is a clue! Someone is looking out for her, but is there a price to be paid? Buy, read and enjoy

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as some of his other books
This is the third book I have read by this author (a man using Sally Spencer as a penname). I gave
the others 4 stars, but didn't think this was as good. There were a lot of F-words and some typos - missed
words mostly rather than bad grammar, although I personally dislike the use of present tense in a narrative.
Beth was a young widow with two children and was struggling as a low paid lawyer. The police became suspicious
when Beth started winning hopeless cases, and cop Sam Brody set out to catch her in wrong-doing. This is not
helped by Sam being attracted to her.
It is the stalker, who calls himself Beth's guardian angel, who is using violence and threats to smooth Beth's path
in life. However, there were very few possible suspects so there wasn't the possibility of many twists in the story.
Other than the stalker, most of the suspects had something to hide.
Although I am only giving this book 3 stars, I would still read something else by this author.
