4.7 out of 5 stars 6,904 ratings

It’s never too late to learn how to stand up for yourself

Niki McKnight has spent her entire adult life being bullied—first by her husband and then by her boss.

Recently widowed, she’s in dire need of an extreme life makeover. But she never expected it to come in the form of her beloved Gran leaving her a magical estate and a mysterious new job as a Recorder—whatever the hell that is!

She and Tilly, her adorable Bichon Frise, head to Scotland to claim her inheritance with no freaking clue what’s in store for them.

In Gretna Green, they meet a colourful cast of characters, including a sentient house, talking cat, Celtic god, Fae king and a sketchy lawyer.

Can the woman who wouldn’t stand up to her husband and was bullied by her boss find and wield the authority required to keep Vikings, Pict and Fae royalty in line?

With the help of her family’s psychic gift and some magic - she just might!

MidLife in Gretna Green is perfect for readers who’d enjoy an uplifting story with cozy paranormal fantasy elements. Set in a magical house with a woman who wants to find and use her own voice and finally claim her power.

The beginning of something unique and marvelous

The beginning of something unique and marvelous
I began this series in March and binge-read it. I'm re-reading it now for the third time! In 50 years of voracious reading, I've rarely been so hooked! The pace isn't rushed, but it never drags - you can relax while being throughly engaged, and there are plenty of bits of humor to make one smile along the way. Linzi's protagonists are so real, so in-depth and sympathetic; her villains are entirely believable and human while remaining despicable and irredeemable. It's so easy to believe these characters are real! The world she creates is completely unique - which is amazing given the glut of paranormal stories out there - and utterly charming. If I could live in that world I truly would have no need for this one, as long as I could bring my cats! (If you're a dog lover, you'll appreciate the Gateway world even more!) Lastly, there's a Facebook group full of the nicest people you could ever want to share a laugh, a photo, or a book suggestion with - check out Linzi Day's Voracious Readers!

This series has been an absolute delight! Fun, great pacing, lots of twists, amazing character and relationship development, and a bit of magic sprinkled on top! I'm too old to stay up reading until 3am and then get up for work at 7am, but I've done it 3 work nights in a row. Wondeful!

Loved it. Loved reading about a main character is not in her twenties, who is introspective, and working through becoming the person she used to be as a child before life happened. Please keep writing.

I read this entire series on Kindle Unlimited and am now purchasing each book for my library. I could not put them down. The characters are likable (or unlikable as the case may be) and real in a setting that is wildly imagined. There is romance without a lot of spice, which is my preference. The world building is fun and varied. If you, like me, enjoy Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs and Anne Bishop's "The Others" series, you will likely enjoy this series.

I enjoyed Linzi Day's first book in her Gretna Green series. Her heroine, Niki, is widowed and just lost possibly the most important person in her life -- her grandmother, Elsie. It is not a spoiler to say that Elsie was cantankerous, difficult, lovable despite that, but was a person who wanted it her own way. Niki was not what she'd expected as a granddaughter in some ways, though Niki was in others...anyway, Elsie just didn't know what to do with Niki whatsoever. (I have to stop there with regards to Elsie, or I'd give too much of the plot away.)

Anyway, Niki must go to her grandmother's home, which is sentient and goes by the name of Dola (pronounced "Dollar"). Niki is the first person in quite some time to actually talk with the home rather than just impose her will on it, which impresses Dola no end. Niki treats Dola as a full partner, which Dola finds refreshing. (Dola has been in this particular place for over a thousand years and has seen many Recorders -- the title Niki has inherited -- come and go.)

Niki, mind you, while strong and stable, has always felt something was missing. She also had a deeply unhappy marriage with a guy named Nick; she found out, as one of Nick's last acts, that Nick had been cheating on Niki for quite some time. As Niki is a good person, and as Niki knew that the other woman had no idea about Niki (Niki figured out that the other woman was all of twenty-two when she's forty-one and her now-deceased husband was the same age as herself), Niki finds a way to send money to the other woman, who is pregnant with Nick's child.

I mention this because while it's not necessarily integral to the plot, it shows Niki's goodness and kindness. She's angry, yes, and rightfully so at her now-dead husband. But she doesn't punish the other woman, mostly because she knows it wasn't the other woman's fault. It was Nick's fault.

So, Niki learns quickly what's going on, why she has to be the Recorder, how her mundane job as a registrar of deeds may actually help in some respects, and befriends Dola as previously stated. She also meets representatives from the various realms (as Dola the house points out, the area is not named Gateway for no reason!), and foils a plot from someone who should've known better. (I hope that's vague enough not to spoil anyone's reading.)

So, Niki's got an important job to do. She's got a few great friends in Aysha and Aysha's daughter, Autumn, along with of course Dola the house, and is an animal lover. Her bichon frise, Tilly, is one of those empathetic dogs that you can't help but love...especially if you're an animal lover like me. Finally, there's a talking cat named HRH (for "her royal highness" as HRH's name is long and difficult to pronounce; most Recorders don't bother to try), who grudgingly shares the home with Niki and Tilly (and, when they visit, Aysha and Autumn) and gives good advice providing she's kept happy with tuna, mackerel, and/or salmon.

In other words, this is a delightfully quirky novel. The characters feel real. Their motivations feel real, too. It was a fun read from beginning to end, and I can't wait to find out what happens in the rest of the series.

    Five stars, highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this book. It kept my interest from start to finish. I love magic, and the time travel made it all the better for me. Can't wait to read book #2 in the series. I hope you are a fast writer because I'm a fast reader. Having to find a new series to read is hard, but when I find one, it's a joy. Thank you for writing and being so good at it.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this, maybe it’s just to sci-fi. I couldn’t have been more wrong. It was light and funny and well written. Keeping my interest is a monumental task that you managed to achieve, I am looking forward to reading the next books.

I am thoroughly enjoying this series.
Character driven plot and very well written and edited, it's a very pleasing read.
With each book, we get to know one of the characters a little better, flaws and all. The fact that nobody is perfect makes it very relatable. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
