The Ghost Hunter Next Door: Beechwood Harbor Ghost Mysteries, Book 1 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,878 ratings

The first rule of being a ghost whisperer: Don't tell anyone. Seriously. Don't.

Sure, it might sound harmless. A fun party trick, even. I assure you, it's not. How do I know? Well, let's just say that I've had a lot of experience with this sort of thing, and nine times out of 10, it turns into an all-consuming disaster.

Being plagued by needy ghosts 24-7 is one thing; being harassed by a horde of curious - or worse, grieving - flesh-and-blood people is an entirely different circus. I mean really, who wants to hold an impromptu seance in the middle of the cereal aisle? Not me, and the manager of the grocery store probably isn't too crazy about the idea, either.

So, that's it. If you're a ghost whisperer, just keep your mouth shut and act normal. Ghosts? What ghosts?

Now, if only I would start listening to my own advice....

A new member has arrived in Beechwood Harbor, Scarlet the ghost hunter! She was introduced in a Beechwood Harbor:Magic Mystery book and is briefly mentioned as someone who has a ghost support group at her flower shop.
Scarlet was a world traveler due to her ability to hear and see ghosts. They bother her so much that she has to escape them by visiting different countries. One ghost liked her so much, he followed her from England, he (Hayward Kensington III) and Scarlet's cat (I should add that he's a ghost as well) Flapjack make her little family. They live above the flower shop that she has just opened. Scarlet is excited and a little nervous about life in her new hometown, as she hopes to keep her ghost skills under the radar.
One night at her ghost support group (Scarlet's way of handling the ghostly requests) a crazed ghost appears, screams, breaks her glass door and issues a demand, 'You are going to help me!' and with those words, Scarlet is on a journey to stop a TV show from remodeling the ghost (Rosie) residence, The Lilac House.
With the help of Lucas, the guard for the TV show and the ghosts, Scarlet must stop Rosie before she starts hurting people!
This is a fun and exciting new character to the Beechwood series of otherly world creatures. It looks like Holly the witch will end up showing Scarlet how to find out if she's a supernatural as well.
I look very forward to reading more about the ghost whisperer!!
    A must read!

This book is a fun read that had me smiling throughout. Scarlett is a ghost whisperer with two quibbling ghosts and a third, who is a non-relenting romantic, living with her. Then a really powerful ghost, Rosie, stomps in and starts causing mayhem. Follow Scarlett through the craziness and her wacky introduction to Lucas, as she tries to help Rosie. This is a totally enjoyable book.

I have read and enjoyed all the Beechwood Harbor books that Danielle Garrett has written. I was delighted to find this new book~sort of a spin-off~about a ghost whisperer in the same town. A slight cross over of characters made it all seem very real to me!

The main character in this book is Scarlet and she owns a flower shop. Unfortunately she sees ghosts all the time, and they have infiltrated into her life, not always peacefully. When a TV production company buys a property to renovate and turn into a bed and breakfast, they get a little more than expected in the form of one very p.o'd ghost. This ghost (Rosie) claims her fiance murdered her weeks before the wedding when she found him and her maid of honor, Wendy, at home in the bedroom during the day. For twenty years she has scared everyone away from the property. For twenty years she has been angry and plotted revenge. When Rosie learns of Scarlet's abilities, she forces herself on Scarlet and issues ultimatums. Worried about the crew's safety, Scarlet tries to solve the twenty year old mystery of Rosie's death. Of course there is a handsome guy who actually believes in Scarlet's abilities to help out as she tries everything possible to keep her promise.

This fast moving, well written book was entertaining up to the very end. I didn't expect what happened. I had a hard time putting the book down while reading, it was so captivating and enjoyable. I recommend it for a good and different paranormal mystery.

A delightful story about a ghost whisperer, a snarky ghost cat, an angry ghost who needs help, charming characters, and witty dialogue. Loved it!
But, Scarlet eats entirely too much sugary stuff…..she needs to eat REAL food at least once in awhile.
Can’t wait to jump into the next one.
The perfect book to curl up in a comfy chair in front of the fireplace with a cup of tea and enjoy.

Scarlet is a woman who can see and talk to Ghosts. She’s very down to earth. She has her strengths and weaknesses. She is surrounded by three active ghosts most of the time. Gwen is really something else. Haywood is very aristocratic. Flapjack is ghostly cat, who is kind of the straight man. This was enjoyable and I hated putting it down to sleep. I stayed up too late reading.

I would have given this book 5 stars if Danielle Garrett keep her facts straight through the story. At one point she has the shop closed on Sundays and Mondays, later she in a hurry to open up on Monday morning. Besides things like that, the story is written so that it is hard to put down.

I love paranormal mysteries and though I wasn't wowed by this story, it had its entertaining bits. Scarlet was a nice character and I loved that she was a ghost whispering florist! I also really liked the paranormal element, there were many different ghosts in this story and that was very entertaining. What I didn't love was that Scarlet was an "yes" girl type of person and the male interest Lucas was not the kind of guy I would ever like. Together, well they did not make magic for me.

The style feels so natural and realistic, as if Flapjack could pop into existence right here. I know the author put a lot of effort into it, but it FEELS effortless, in that easy-to-read, page-turner-y way. Fun! In fact, it’s so fun, that it truly makes for the best escape from reality!

I love Scarlet, first and foremost. But the ghosts, oh, the ghosts! I love Hayward and Gwen, and of course Flapjack! Rosie the not-so-nice ghost is scary though. Not horror-y scary, but spooky all the same! I love love loved this book!

A wonderful bunch of characters in this story, both the live ones and the ghosts. This is an interesting mix of romance, ghosts and mystery. The book is well-written, the characters are engaging and while the ghosts are not scary they are fun. I especially liked the cat. I am looking forward to reading more from this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars original plot in a saturated niche
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 25, 2024
I’m really impressed with this series, the author has managed to find original and real characters in what is a pretty saturated and same-ey niche paranormal genre.
So far I’m on book 5 but thought it better to review on the first instalment.
I really like the main characters Scarlet and Lucas, and the key ghosts who share their lives. Scarlet’s developing powers are revealed at a realistic rate and she goes through a significant learning curve. Also her and Lucas are not the usual sappy codependents and their relationship rings true. Read this series! I doubt you’ll be disappointed
