The 22 Greatest Football Players Of All Time Kindle Edition

Oh no, not again! That is what I think whenever I see another so-called ultimate list of the Greatest Football Players Of All Time. I know that, again, I won't agree with the results. If and when any evidence is given to support these rankings, we are usually talking 'apples and oranges'. Someone like German Keiser Franz Beckenbauer may be admired for his ‘leadership on the pitch’ while Lionel Messi is praised for his ‘elegant play’. Both observations are 100% correct but it is impossible to measure these feats in an objective manner. In rankings, a player's club achievements can also weigh just as much as their World Cup results. But as a true lover of the football game, you can't seriously claim that winning the Champions League, for example, is just as impressive as winning the world championship! A World Cup victory is the one and only top result: it is a player’s Masterpiece. Perhaps that is why the Germans call it Weltmeister: master of the world.

In 2022, the 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup will take place. What better way to mark this milestone than to identify the 22 Greatest Footballer Players Of All Time? An election of the very best in football, based on a new objective, quantitative method. To this end, I add, divide, multiply and subtract points, because perhaps Dutch football icon Johan Cruyff was right after all: in the end, football may be quite logical. For me, it goes without saying that a player's World Cup results will weigh the heaviest by far. Which other achievement must be included to render a fair verdict? Who are
truly the 22 Greatest Of All Time? And which other amazing players deserve a honourable mention too? You will read it in this book.

From the Publisher

Why another ranking?

Cristiano Ronaldo in 1st place?

Cristiano in 1st place?

No doubt: Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest football players of all time. His honour list is almost endless. But... is he truly the G.O.A.T.?

Messi almost made it in 2014

Messi almost made it in 2014

Messi has never won a World Cup. He came close in 2014 but lost to the German team. Qatar 2022 may be his last chance to complete his trophy case.

Too many rankings out there

Too many rankings out there

Football fans forever argue about who are the Greatest of All Times. But their top-5 lists usually lack any evidence. We can and must do better!

Maurice Riesewijk was born in the World Cup year of 1966, in the city of Utrecht, The Netherlands. When he was a young child, he played football in the streets with his friends every free minute. As a teenager, ‘Johan 1’ and ‘Johan 2’ (Johan Cruyff and Johan Neeskens) were his absolute football heroes. Luckily, Maurice was too young and too busy playing football to register the dramatic defeat of the Dutch national team in the World Cup final of 1974. He did, however, watch the second Dutch football ‘disaster’ on television 4 years later, when the Netherlands lost another World Cup final in (and to) Argentina. As a young adult, Maurice took the TC3 coaching course at the National Dutch Football Association (‘KNVB’) and between 1993-1999, he coached student football association Odysseus from the University of Utrecht. He does not support any (inter)national football club in particular. Rather, the major (inter)continental tournaments in international association football have always been Maurice’ great loves. For him, the World Cup is paramount because every 4 years, this event captures the hearts and minds of lovers of the football game around the globe. More than just a competition, the World Cup is a world celebration.
