Game On: An Aces Hockey Novel Kindle Edition
Cam Brickley and his pro hockey teammates bet on everything: who can win five faceoffs in a row, who can do forty pushups in less than a minute, who can eat a ghost pepper without puking. But when his buddies bet him he can’t date the same woman—like, say, the hot blonde over at the bar—for two months and not fall in love, he’ll take that bet all day. Then he’ll laugh all the way to the hockey arena, where they’ll be washing his jock straps for the rest of the season, because Cam’s never giving up his bachelor lifestyle.
Olivia Lockwood, heiress to the Lockwood Industries fortune, is used to people using her for her money and family connections. When Cam Brickley hits on her in a club, Olivia’s first instinct is to brush him off. But he couldn’t be using her for her money, since he has more than enough of his own. Cam’s gorgeous and built, and it would be no hardship to go out with him . . . besides, he’d be the perfect spokesperson for the children’s charity she works with. Maybe it’s time for her to start using people.
Cam and Olivia are both in it for something. What they don’t know yet is that they’re playing for keeps.

“You don’t really use those lines, do you?” I had to smile back at him, his grin infectious. Heat zoomed low in my belly, attraction buzzing through my veins.
“Nah.” He made a face. “I don’t usually have to.”
It could have been cocky, and maybe it was a bit, but he said it in such a matter-of-fact way, I believed him.
Then I recognized him. Cam Brickley. He played for the Chicago Aces, our local NHL team. I wasn’t a huge hockey fan, but I liked most sports and enjoyed going to games a few times a year.
No wonder he didn’t have to pick up girls.
Why was this big-time pro athlete hitting on me? Whoa, whoa, wait . . . that was something my sister and mom had programmed into my brain. There was no reason someone like him shouldn’t be hitting on me.
I was . . . flattered.
But not interested.
I was done with men, especially after what I’d just gone through with Jason. Which sadly hadn’t been that different than any of the other guys I’d dated in the last few years. In my experience, men weren’t interested in me for who I was . . . they were interested in me because of who my family was, especially my dad, and because of my sizable trust fund.
“What makes me the lucky one?” I asked dryly.
His slow smile melted my panties. “Must be something wrong with my eyes. I couldn’t take them off you.”
“Good one.” Especially the way he looked at me, with heat and interest . . . as if he really couldn’t take his eyes off me.
“Did you like that band that just played?”
I studied him again, still not sure what was happening here, trying to figure out if that was another pickup line.
“Yeah. They’re one of my favorites. That’s why we came here tonight.”
“Oh yeah? So you’ve seen them before?”
“Mmm. Lots of times.”
“Cool. I’ve been here before but haven’t seen them. How about the next band? Do you know them?”
“Blue Day. Yeah. They’re good too.”
“I’m Cam.” He held out a hand.
“I know,” I admitted. “I recognized you.”
“Ah.”
I hesitated before introducing myself. Ah, why not? “I’m Olivia.” We shook. His hand was big and warm. Strong.
He smiled again, and my belly fluttered. “Well, since my line didn’t work, I just want to tell you that I think you’re gorgeous, and I’d love to get to know you better. If you want to have a drink and talk, I’ll be over there.” He gestured back to his friends. “Your friends can join us too, if you want.”
Gorgeous. Well. The compliment felt sincere, and it made my heart quiver. And inviting all of us to join them was certainly not threatening or creepy. He was leaving it up to me.
“Okay. I mean, I’ll see what they say.”
“Great.” He flashed that winsome smile again and sauntered away.
As soon as he was out of earshot, my friends (and co-workers) Paisley and Julia moved in.
“Who was thaaaaat?” Paisley gripped my forearm.
“Cam Brickley.”
Julia and Paisley both gaped at me. “Shut up!”
I shrugged, excitement doing a little dance in my belly. I tucked some hair behind one ear. “Seriously.”
“Oh my God!” Julia practically jumped up and down.
My other friend Noah rejoined us then. “What’d I miss?”
“Cam Brickley was just trying to pick up Olivia!”
“No, he wasn’t.” I paused, not sure why I was denying it. Clearly, he had been.
“Cam Brickley, the hockey player?” Noah’s eyes widened.
“Yes!”
“Um, he invited us all to join him and his friends.” My gaze slid back and forth among them.
Julia and Paisley actually squealed.
“Come on.” I rolled my eyes. “It’s not that exciting.”
“Wait.” Noah held up a hand. “You said we need star power.”
I blinked. “What? Oh. This afternoon. Yeah. Ohhhhhh.”
These three were my best friends, but technically, I was their boss at Move On Chicago, a nonprofit organization I’d started three years ago. In a meeting earlier today, Paisley, our development manager, whose job was raising funds and building relationships to help grow the organization, had reported to us on her recent efforts to attract a prominent local spokesperson. Nobody from the Chicago Cubs or the White Sox or the Bears had called us back.
I glanced over at the table of guys. Were they all hockey players? I recognized Olaf Pilkvist because of his pale blond hair. The three other men there were harder to place this far away, and two had their backs to me.
Cam Brickley was good-looking. Charming. A pro athlete with what appeared to be some personality. He’d be a perfect spokesperson for Move On Chicago. Kids would love it . . . boys, girls, all ages.
“We need star power,” Noah reminded me.
“Yeah.” I cast another glance at Cam Brickley.
Move On Chicago had grown quickly, but lately things had stagnated. I was passionate about our mission—promoting the health and wellness of Chicago youth through organized running programs—but passion didn’t pay the bills or increase the programs we could offer. Or even keep the existing programs going, for that matter.
Recently we’d gone after a big grant and had lost out on it, after months of working on the proposal. Our donations had dwindled the last two months in a row, and the big companies we’d approached about partnering with us hadn’t even bothered to respond.
It would break my heart if we had to let down a bunch of kids who’d committed to doing something that would improve their lives.
I nibbled my bottom lip.
We’d talked about recruiting a celebrity who wasn’t a sports star, maybe even one of my family’s prominent business contacts, but an athlete fit so much better with our mission.
Cam’s head didn’t move, but I felt him looking at me. Even at that distance, our gazes locked. Great. He caught me staring at him. Heat flashed over me. Maybe this was worth a shot. “Okay, let’s go join them.”
Julia and Paisley started forward, but I grabbed Paisley’s arm. “Wait.”
“What?”
“Let’s get drinks first. Otherwise they’ll think we want them to buy us drinks.”
Paisley’s mouth twisted. “Okay. But I wouldn’t mind them buying me a drink. Just sayin’.”
Noah scowled.
“They could all be married,” I said, turning to the bar.
“Ugh. Why would he hit on you if he’s married?” Paisley moved beside me.
I gave her a look. “Because he’s a man?”
“Not all men are cheaters.” Noah nudged my shoulder on the other side of me.
“Mmm. Sure.”
He shook his head, and we ordered another round of drinks. With glasses in hand, we moved through the tables to the one where Cam sat. The skyscrapers across the river sparkled in the darkness outside the big glass window. In the summer, this glass wall opened onto a big patio that overlooked the river.
Cam looked up and saw us approach, and his smile reached down inside me. My belly fluttered in response.
“Hey.”
“Hi. We decided to take you up on your invitation to join you.”
“Great. Let’s grab more chairs.”
Chairs were in short supply, with every table full, which was why we’d been standing at the bar. But with a smile and a question to those sitting near us, he had two more chairs. Then he disappeared briefly and returned with a man in black pants, white shirt, and tie who was carrying two more chairs.
We arranged ourselves and made introductions, and I sensed that Cam’s tablemates weren’t excited about us joining them. I mean, they were all polite and friendly, but they weren’t flirting. Not that they’d flirt with Noah.
Although, who knew? Anyway. I recognized all the names . . . Chase Hartman, Eric Barclay, James Baumgartner, and, yes, Olaf Pilkvist. As for being single . . . everyone in the world knew that Chase was dating Jordyn Banks. The others I wasn’t sure about.
Cam had ensured I was sitting next to him, and he leaned closer. “So, Olivia, besides being gorgeous, what do you do for a living?”
One corner of my mouth lifted in response to his flirting. I wanted to roll my eyes, but resisted. “I run a nonprofit. Move On Chicago.”
“Hmm. Haven’t heard of it.”
“We’re still pretty small. But we’re growing.” I gestured at my friends. “We all work there. I’m the executive director. Julia is communications manager, Noah is deputy director, and Paisley’s the development manager.”
“Cool. What’s your cause?”
“We’re working to get kids moving. Running, mostly, because it’s cheap and easy. We work with a bunch of schools.”
“Hey, that’s awesome.” His praise seemed sincere and his interest genuine. “Obviously, I think fitness is important.”
“Obviously.” I picked up my daiquiri. “Since you’re a professional athlete.”
I felt the others’ anticipation of me saying something, asking him to be involved. But I hesitated.
I had experience being used for what I could do for people. Maybe it was time I toughened up and learned how to use that experience in ways that would benefit me.
Although, benefiting Move On Chicago wasn’t really benefiting me. It was helping kids.
The next band started their set, which made talking difficult, so we all turned our attention to the low stage. I was super aware of Cam beside me though, his big shoulder brushing mine when he reached for his beer, the smile he flashed me when we applauded a song.
Gaaaawd, he was attractive.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2019I've seen this author's books, read the blurbs, and thought they were interesting. But I never seem to have time to read them. When the opportunity came about to read this one, I jumped at it, even knowing it was the last in the series (I mean, really, who starts a series reading the last book?!?) I'm so glad I did! This book was amazing!
Cam is a hot hockey player. On the outside, he is a cocky playboy. He doesn't do relationships, doesn't get involved, doesn't do love. When a bet with his teammates throws Olivia in his path, he decides he can spend some time with her, win the bet, and keep his heart to himself.
Olivia is sweet. There is no other way to put it. She is giving, loving, and funny. But her kind nature makes it easy for her to be taken advantage of. And there are things in her past that lend to her being hurt by others, and she doesn't think she is good enough, thinks she is going to spend the rest of her life alone.
These two are so perfect together! I loved their chemistry and their connection, even when they both were denying it, fighting against it. This was a wonderful story, and I enjoyed it a lot. So much so, that I'm going to have to go back and read the rest of the series!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2019WOW Book Eight Already. Chicago Aces is not just another Hockey Series it’s A Kelly Jamieson Hockey Series and from the very first book you are totally vested in this team.
We get to meet in this final book Cam “Brick”Brickley. He is a Fantastic player for the Aces, A Great Brother & Son But he is also a player when it comes to the ladies and whenever there is a dare he never backs down, so asking a woman out seemed like a easy bet but when it’s Olivia Lockwood the odds are so much different.
Olivia Lockwood is a woman on a mission to prove to her family that she can succeed on her own and not working for her family. With her non-profit organization Move On Chicago her priority is her job and never again a man. But one night can change everything.
From the moment they meet you can’t help laughing out loud as they spend more time together you see how much fun they have with each other but can a stupid bet and some insecurities derail how incredible they can be together.
Even though this is the last book in this series Kelly Jamieson ends it with a high note and you can’t help feel this is a series I’m happy I read from book one right up until book eight.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2019**I voluntarily read an early copy of this title courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review**
Game On is the final installment in the Aces Hockey series. We've had a great run with this series and I was happy to see it end with a strong finish.
Cam Brickley has always been a player in every sense of the word - he plays hard on the ice, but he also loves women and isn't a fan of long term, committed relationships. He's upfront about that and so it hasn't been a problem to this point. When he and his teammates do what they always do, bet on something, what turns out as a seemingly simple bet, to get the beautiful woman in the bar to go out with him for two months, may turn out to be the most complicated wager of his life.
Olivia Lockwood is making a name for herself with her non-profit organization, which is a far cry from her family's business Lockwood Industries. She's never really fit with the family business and she also has never totally fit in with her siblings. The one thing that Olivia has always had to deal with is people wanting to befriend her or date her in order to get closer to her family's business and that has begun to weigh on her, causing her to want nothing to do with dating. When she meets Cam, will he change that?
Will these two people, who need one another for different reasons, figure out that they really want each other for themselves and not for the original reasons they got together? Or will their past insecurities end things before they really get going?
I enjoyed these characters and I also really enjoyed how Jamieson pulled in little known facts about Chicago. As someone who has been to the city many times, I didn't know those things and it makes me want to go back and explore further now! I'm sad to see this series come to an end, but I'm glad to know we'll be getting more hockey from Jamieson in the future!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2019I love Ms. Jamieson’s books so much! This series in particular holds a piece of my heart. And to know that is completes it is bitter sweet. But don’t worry I will be re reading them all the time. Cam and Olivia for the last book was perfect! From the minute these two meet, that fun spark was there. From the first kiss to the first date to more kisses, these two will burn up your reading device.
Also I did love that we got to catch up with the others at the end. Best way to end a series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great addition to the series
I’m so sad this is the end of the series. This story is just another reason why author Kelly Jamieson is one of my favourite authors. I love how knowledgeable she is on hockey & how she makes both the rough road to romance happiness & hockey work together. Cam & Olivia are a great couple, their relationship starts out as a bet & the need for a high profile celebrity. Cam’s teammates bet him he can’t date someone for 2 months & not fall in love with her. Olivia needs someone with a high profile to be the face of a program for her nonprofit organization, so when Cam hits on her with some corny lines she sees promise. What follows is a laugh out loud but painful first & second dates. Embarrassing questions & corny one liners at a fun game cafe to food poisoning on the first date can only be topped by a chair breaking, pant soaking second date. The truth comes out about why each of them started the relationship & both agreed to continue. Only 1 problem at the end of the 2 months Olivia has fallen hard for Cam, but to win the bet Cam can’t & wont admit his loss. Now he’s got to figure out whether or not Olivia is who he wants in his future. I’m so glad the author ended this book the way she did, it gave us 1 last look at all the players & how their lives have moved on since their stories were told. Definitely recommend to read. Great book & great series.

A little tearful that it’s the end of the series. I enjoyed Cam and Olivia’s camaraderie. Their first few dates made them feel almost human to me 😂.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unlikable characters make this one a dud
I was surprised by this effort from Kelly Jamieson. I have loved most of her books, so much so that I have purchased most of them without even reading the description, I have that much faith that they will be good. This one though, has made me hesitate on the next one. First of all, I can't remember ever disliking a character more than I disliked Olivia Lockwood. It was almost as if the author was trying to make her seem like that "what does he see in her" girlfriend. What's the first rule of making someone unlikable? Right out of the gate, it was that Olivia didn't like Cam's dog. What kind of heroine doesn't like animals? And for no good reason? Furthermore, what kind of hero locks his dog in a bedroom by himself so he can get lucky with said girl? Why introduce a dog into the story at all? Especially when the dog is going to make the lead characters seem like selfish jerks. I was confused and even wondered if the author was bored and wondering what she could do to make the reader hate the lead characters. There were other things like Olivia's petulant behaviour with Cam's friends, her insecurities, and her reluctance to meet his sister and her kids that added up to someone I not only would never want to hang out with, but someone I wasn't rooting for at all throughout the book. I even found myself hoping Cam would wise up and end things with her...that was a first for me as a lifetime reader of romances. Lastly, I'm noticing a consistent speech pattern with Kelly Jamieson's characters lately...they all have the same verbal crutches. If one more character of hers says "Gah...Eck...or eh"....I'm out. Both the male and the female characters say it too often and it's incredible unbelievable. From one plucky heroine...cute....but from ALL of the characters..male and female? Contrived and lazy. Kelly has written a lot of books...I've enjoyed many of them..but this one and a few others I've read lately have me wondering if it's become a bit of a factory and we're losing quality over quantity...
