About the author

I've spent my working life as a journalist. You meet a lot of people, see things, learn stuff. For a crimewriter, it's a plot factory.
I've also done a lot of travelwriting. It's not all cocktails under the palm trees but it is a fantastic job that's taken me to more than 40 countries, from the white wastes of Arctic Finland to the deserts of Namibia.
People often ask my favourite place. In a world of globalisation, many destinations look the same but Iceland and Namibia are like stepping onto another planet. Go if you can.
I've also enjoyed a long love affair with Western Crete, the mountains, coastline, food and people. And I was delighted and surprised to receive the Ed Lacy Gibraltar travel award in 2007.
Another interest is my family tree. I've traced the ancestors back to William of Byfield, a farmer in 1600s Northamptonshire, just down the road from Shakespeare.
I love maps. They might seem old fashioned in the age of GPS but they tell stories, make promises. I have a ragbag collection of more than 3,000.
I'm also a fan of interesting cheeses, good beer and wilderness. They're like Marmite, you're an empty places person or you're not.
I have written six crime thrillers and a book of short stories featuring Danny Lancaster, a wounded Afghanistan veteran turned private investigator. They are:
The Wreck Of The Margherita
Death Squad
Rough Diamond
Rock Hard
Gargoyle Pixie Dog
Godlefe’s Cuckoo
Last Orders
I've also written three non-fiction books. GUNNER is based on my father's World War Two diary. PIGTAIL PILOT is the tragic story of a talented young woman pilot. A CROCUS FROM JERUSALEM is about a 19-year-old country lad's journey to war in the Middle East in 1917.
If you fancy a chat I'm easy to find.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI read this set of short Danny Lancaster stories some months ago and could have sworn I'd left a review, but, I guess not. If you are a fan of the series, each of these stories serves to fill in some of the gaps between those full length novels and add to Danny's backstory. But, you DON'T have to have read the novels to enjoy these short mysteries. Each stands on its own. The title story is the longest, with several well developed characters and turns into a real nail biter. It alone, is an excellent read worth the investment. The rest of the stories only add to the reader's enjoyment. A fine addition to a (hopefully) continuing series. Well done, Bill Todd.

5.0 out of 5 stars An anti-hero worth reading about
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAnother fast-moving book about off-the-wall hero Danny Lancaster - but this one is slightly different! Instead of our hero coming back from the dead, as I am sure he will in a later book (I won't say more for readers who haven't read all the Lancaster books), Gargoyle Pixie Dog is a series of cases solved by private investigator Danny.
They are written by his friend Wanda, but you soon forget this as you get into each short story. As with all of Bill Todd's books, they are very easy and enjoyable to read, with twists and turns that often surprise.
Each case is set in Brighton and the author's research and knowledge of the town astounds me.
If you haven't read one of the Danny Lancaster books, I would recommend you do. But Gargoyle Pixie Dog can be enjoyed even if you haven't read the earlier books in the series. Within a few minutes you will know all you need to know about the ex-soldier with an artificial leg, our anti-hero Danny, who couldn't be further removed from the typical investigator. And each story stands alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars The clues are on the streets of Brighton
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGargoyle Pixie Dog gives a real insight into what it's like living on the cold streets of Brighton. And that even goes for Danny Lancaster, who has to sleep rough to find clues to this case.
The title of the book appears a bit odd at first, but once we hit the pages, everything becomes crystal clear. The pace in this adventure seems to quicken more so than in past novels, with Danny, the lone investigator, having greater ability in solving the crime than the heavily-resourced local police force.
Gargoyle Pixie Dog is different from Bill Todd's other books in that it also includes a number of short stories. For me, the author leaves the best till last with Sudden Death, featuring a character from one of his earlier books, villain Big Eddie Archer.
Although Danny doesn't like working with Big Eddie, he is well rewarded for his troubles. This tale includes pyrotechnics of the variety found in an Arnie film, and the punchline proves that a little misunderstanding can cost countless lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Excellent Adventures with Danny
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHaving read the series of 'Danny' books, I was intrigued as to how Gargoyle Pixie Dog and short stories would differ being told by Wanda instead of Danny. No need for worries here however, at times you forget this is Wanda's telling and at others it is insightful to see another side of Danny from Wanda's view and understand the intricate and sometimes complicated relationships that surround Danny. My favourite was the title story but the others were all excellent too with lots of twists, turns and surprises and covering a variety of investigations.
A complete page turner and you can never guess the way the storyline will follow or the outcome along the way, which in itself is a rarity. A highly enjoyable, exciting, entertaining, adventurous read.
If, unlike me, you have never read any of the Danny Lancaster series, there is nothing to stop you reading this first as an introduction although I would highly recommend all the books in the series.
Without giving any previous plots away - Fingers crossed for more Danny Lancaster adventures in the future !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bonus novel for Danny fans!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGargoyle Pixie Dogg – a treat for Danny Lancaster fans and a very good read for anyone who has never read a Danny book – you will be converted! After Danny’s assumed demise in “Rock Hard” (come on Bill, please don’t kill him off!), the void is filled with a collection of short stories of Danny’s previous investigation cases. If you have never read any of the previous Danny books, then firstly I’m sorry for the spoiler, but most of all you can read this as a standalone novel and get the Danny bug. With clever and intricate story-telling, Bill Todd never fails to please. Very much looking forward to the next Danny installment – assuming there is one!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great collection
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSometimes you find a series which you think you will enjoy but you missed out on the start. Do you go to the beginning and hope you’ll get chance to read them all or do you dive in and feel lost? This book, which is full novel length, is a really good way to get a taster of the author’s Danny Lancaster stories. Danny is a private investigator, an ex-soldier who lost a leg in Afghanistan, and, if these stories are typical, he’s never going to get rich. He makes enough to get by but he’s got a soft heart, in spite of some of the things he becomes involved with.
I admit to being seduced by the title, though the reason for it becomes obvious when Danny is trying to trace a missing street girl. This is the main story, although there are shorter stories in the collection. I didn’t find a dud in there and I like the author’s style of writing. He comes up with some excellent phrases and isn’t a slave to cliché. I really hope I’ll find the time to read more Danny Lancaster before too long. A great collection and a lesson to series authors in how to give potential new readers a way in.
