The General of Caracas: A Novel (Oliver Jardine Series) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 37 ratings

A dissident general. A dangerous secret. A race across Iberia to expose the truth.

Ex-MI6 analyst Oliver Jardine thought he’d retired from the spy game. But when a defiant Venezuelan General appears on his doorstep in Spain—pursued by a brutal regime and armed with information that could shake a nation—Jardine is pulled back into a world he thought he’d left behind.

The mission: get the General to Lisbon before he can be silenced.

The problem? They’re being hunted across Spain and Portugal by assassins with diplomatic cover, and time is running out.

What begins as a simple escort operation turns into a high-stakes game of survival, as Jardine must outwit shadowy agents, evade surveillance, and confront ghosts from his past. The General holds a secret that could dismantle the Venezuelan dictatorship—if he lives long enough to tell it.

Fast, witty, and sharply observed, The General of Caracas is a gripping modern spy thriller, blending political intrigue with dry humour and edge-of-your-seat suspense.

✔️ For fans of Graham Greene, Mick Herron, and Ross Thomas
✔️ A twisty international caper set against real-world unrest
✔️ Smart, satirical, and perfect for a weekend read

Praise for THE GENERAL OF CARACAS

“The tight, tense plot is straight-forward and never flags, while Page's tremendous ability to bring the land, people, culture of his Latin locales to life with evocative prose that rivals the very best of past and current travel journalists for its sparkling detail and surprising insights.”Michael Frost Beckner, Acclaimed Hollywood screenwriter and award-winning novelist, (Spy Game & The Spy Game novels)

With his sophomore book, Page is firmly establishing himself as a keen observer of the comical misadventures, incongruences and juxtapositions present in Latin America and her society and politics. This time his sights are firmly set on Venezuela and I can't remember a better or more witty portrayal of the region since Louis de Bernieres', The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts.” —Richard McColl, the Colombia Calling podcast.

"Ian Fleming-style action."F.E. Beyer, Author of BUENOS AIRES TRIAD

"The General Of Caracas takes the spy thriller genre in to a fresh altitude."—Surjit Reads and Recommends

“Page manages to paint a picture of the current situation in Venezuela and reveal the absurdities of the current regime while entertaining in a page-turning spy novel.” —ARC Reviewer

In Lachlan Page's second outing with now-retired former MI6 analyst Oliver Jardine once again dragged into the field along with his charming and stunningly capable Colombian wife Veronica, Page firmly establishes himself as an espionage author of singular vision who can load a book with edge-of-your-seat suspense and fire it off hot with breezy, witty banter, shocking violence, and political satire--both stingingly and laugh-out-loud funny--that scores a bullseye on his target: the all too real tragedy that is Venezuela.

From a dangerous river crossing from Venezuela into Colombia, to a deadly chase through southern Spain into Portugal, Oliver and Veronica clash with a deadly Cuban assassin, Venezuelan spies, a CIA "cowboy," and the Venezuelan General himself--a wonderful and fully realized character who carries both the sins and hopes for his fallen nation--in a secret mission to expose the crimes of his former despotic leaders to the world.

The tight, tense plot is straight-forward and never flags, while Page's tremendous ability to bring the land, people, culture of his Latin locales to life with evocative prose that rivals the very best of past and current travel journalists for its sparkling detail and surprising insights. But what makes "The General..." stand out most strikingly in current espionage fiction, is the author's ability to look at geo-political, social, secret and national movements from diametrically opposing points of view and argue two sides with equal passion with a deft and delicate touch.

Without giving away the plot, I'll just say, it's bigger here, the stakes are higher, the action and violence more in your face and perhaps, best of all, in a genre that sometimes leans into cliches, Mr. Page skewers them then delivers a his own original take that serves them up in surprising and delightful ways.

With that in mind, I keep my fingers crossed that the child-loving, ruthless but politically conflicted Cuban assassin he invents for this book returns in what I hope will be a yearly appearance of his once-and-future spy Oliver and Oliver's better half, Veronica. Also, as with "Magical Disinformation" you will find yourself planning your next vacation to the wonderful locales he so richly delivers. A fabulous read and highly recommended.

I intended to do a number of jobs around the house this weekend but that didn't happen as soon as I started reading The General of Caracas! Wow. Such an easy read. It was both funny and exciting. I thought I would read a chapter of two but that didn't work. I would put Lachlan up with any of the authors I have read of this genre.
