The most haunted theme park in the world just got even more terrifying...

The afterlife is real. Ghostland will prove it to you.

That's what it says on the brochure. According to the people in charge, Ghostland is a place where guests can watch the dead in their natural environments, recreated in painstaking detail on the grounds in Duck Falls, Maryland. All you need is one of their special Augmented Reality headsets, and their revolutionary "Recurrence Field" technology renders the hauntings "completely safe" to view....

Former best friends Ben Laramie and Lilian Roth reunite at Ghostland on opening day. Lilian, to face her fear of death head on. Ben, to confront the ghost of his former idol, deceased horror author Rex Garrote, whose haunted house is the park's star attraction.

But someone has a darker motive. A computer virus spreads throughout the park's many haunted attractions, gobbling up the code holding each spirit. Making them crave violence. Carnage. V
engeance.

Ben and Lillian suddenly find themselves trapped in an endless nightmare where nowhere is safe, and few can be trusted.

With time running short and the dead quickly outnumbering the living, they must use their wits and rely on each other to survive… or become Ghostland's newest exhibits.

Featuring an interactive "Know Your Ghosts" guide and much more, Ghostland is a rollercoaster horror thrill-ride loaded with scares, gore and heart.

Joe Hempel is a wonderful narrator. He is perfect for this type of book. I have listened to four horror books by another author that he narrated.-- "Exit, Persued by a Bear"

Awesome Theme Park Romp!

Awesome Theme Park Romp!
I grabbed my gore suite for the second time around on this book as I knew I was going to be needing it and the second time around I enjoyed it even more! A little backstory for you: Two friends Ben and Lillian along with Lillian's therapist Dr. Wexler decide to check out the new theme park, Ghostland. The theme park has all different kinds of exhibits that include ghosts which are trapped within those exhibits. The park comes with a map of where everything is located and the place is huge. Also Ben, Lillian, and Dr. Wexler are handed special glasses to see the ghosts as without them they will see nothing. Ben is excited most of all as Ghostland is centered around horror author, Rex Garrote, who had died in an unique way and who had also lived in one of the most haunted houses in America. So Ben is really psyched to be able to explore the theme park and he just wants to delve deep into all the exhibits. Everything seems to be going along smooth as silk until on the tram ride through the park an unexpected event happens when the computer system to the park fails and the trapped ghosts that are exhibits become "un-trapped"! The ghosts are free and when that happens all hell breaks loose in the park as the ghosts go on a rampage destroying anything that gets in their way! What happens to Ben, Lillian, and Dr. Wexler? Do they make it through the theme park unscathed? What causes the computer system to fail? What happens when the ghosts escape? No spoilers here as you will just have to read the book! Thoughts: This book was an extensive research project for the author, Duncan Ralston and you can tell how much time went into this book. Very detailed descriptions of all the exhibits throughout the park along with quite a bit of technology research as well. I became attached to the characters and when the crap hits the fan in the story with the ghosts becoming free this story goes into ghosts overdrive as the action ratchets up in the book! On this second time around, I was on the edge of my seat as when the action starts happening I was glued to my kindle as there is nothing more cool than reading about ghosts that are ticked off and causing havoc as they go on a ghosts attack! There are some very extreme "walk on the wild side" sections of the book which might make you cringe and cover your eyes! The action was so intense in the story that it was like sitting in a movie theatre with booming surround sound as when you read about the screams in the park, you are going to be hearing it and when the gore starts flying you will be feeling it splatter in your face! Giving this book five "creative ghostly" stars!

You probably recognize Duncan Ralston as the author of the extreme horror novel, Woom, that went viral in the internet bookspace. Bookstagram, booktok, etc. Maybe you think of him every time you see a traffic cone in an unconventional space, like my fellow Woomies do. I loved Woom because I like extreme horror, but I wasn’t in a hurry to read Ghostland. I don’t pick up ghost stories often. I don’t believe in things like ghosts, hauntings, or anything that implies an afterlife. That’s too big a leap for me so I tend to find ghost stories a bit boring. That said, Ghostland is on the BoH Indie Brawl list, so I read a ghost story. Buckle up, this is gonna be a long one.

So let’s talk format for a moment. I like to read along with audiobooks. I like to make highlights and notes to refer back to when I’m writing my reviews. I like being able to listen to an audiobook while I’m working or crocheting and popping over to my kindle to make a quick highlight. I own the kindle version and watched Libby for the audiobook. So imagine my joy when Libby notified me that the library had acquired this audiobook and it was available to borrow. I hit play and was greeted by the sound of one of my favorite narrator’s voice. Joe Hempel has narrated literally hundreds of audiobooks, and while I have not consumed nearly that many of them, every one that I have has been a delightful listen. I see Hempel and I just know I’m going to enjoy the narration.

Ghostland is rumored to be the most haunted theme park in the world. The main attraction is a mansion haunted by a horror author named Rex Garrote who died in his home by self-immolation. Yeah. Dude set himself on fire and haunts his house. Aside from that, the entire theme park is home to hundreds of ghosts that can be seen by patrons via headsets. So there’s a lot of hype surrounding Ghostland, the hauntedest place on earth. This story follows Ben and Lillian as they venture into this new theme park, each with their own motivation for being there. Ben has a beef with Rex Garrote and Lillian has something to prove to herself and her therapist. Of course because they’re visiting Jurassic Park for Ghosts with Technology, shit goes awry. Like Jurassic Park, the bulk of the story is the exhibit that has no business existing not working as intended after a technology fail. Surprise, ghosts gonna ghost. Ben and Lillian fight for survival while rekindling their friendship. You’ll have to read it to find out how that goes. This is not an extreme horror book, but there are some pretty gruesome scenes. It’s great.

When I originally sat down to write this review, I started as I usually do by checking out the author’s website. While most authors have one, it is often mostly a place where they sell things and announce their new books. Sometimes there’s a blog that hasn’t been updated in a while, despite the author’s level of activity on social media. Totally understandable. Getting people to read your blog is a chore. Ralston’s website is all of these things, but it is also a rabbit hole I eagerly fell into. If you found yourself wondering about Rex Garrote like I did, you probably googled him and ended up reading the Rex Garrote saga on Ralston’s website. This book is full of recognizable horror references, so naturally the reader would wonder about Rex Garrote. I won’t spoil it for you, but I will suggest that you read it from the beginning and enjoy the ride. Ralston is one hell of a storyteller. I thought the book was pretty great, but this added another dimension that pushed my rating up a bit.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me. If you love horror and Woom is the extent of your exposure to Ralston, it’s time to remedy that. Don’t be intimidated by the page count (414 for the kindle version, 1000+ for the omnibus edition). It’s fast paced and fun! The horror references and their footnotes made this book feel like Ready Player One for horror fans. I read the first part for the BoH Indie Brawl, but I will be reading the entire omnibus because it’s just a really good story.

Ghostland by Duncan Ralston is one of those books that everybody was raving about on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. I knew it was one I was eventually going to have to check out, so it was added to the TBR list and forced to wait until the mood hit me. And eventually, it did.

One of the questions I've seen posted on Twitter for the writing community is: Can a location be a character? In Ghostland, the location is Garrotte House, and it is indeed one of the characters. In the very beginning, we see Garrotte House being relocated-- That's right. The entire house has been removed from its original location and is being located to Duck Falls, Maryland, where it is to be the star attraction in a new themed attraction -- Ghostland. Garrote House belonged to Rex Garrote, an infamous horror author with a fascination with the occult who killed himself within the house. Witnessing this event are Ben Laramie and Lillian Roth. But Garrote house isn't unoccupied, and Ben knows who the occupant is. The shock of it is enough to trigger a fatal heart attack. That's right. Before the Prologue is over, one of our central characters, Ben, is dead.

At the start of Chapter 1, we find that Ben is very much alive, having been resuscitated and is considered to be frail. Any sort of excitement will more than likely trigger another heart attack, and this time he might not be so lucky. We also find that he and his BFF, Lillian, are no longer forever friends, as she can't come to grips with Ben's death and resurrection. She has issues with death, issues that she is in therapy for, and Ben's presence is a constant reminder of that. Given the physical and emotional baggage both kids are carrying, it's surprising to find that they mend their relationship enough to take a trip to Ghostland on opening day. Lillian is hoping to get a handle on her issues with death by exposing herself to the assortment of haunted properties population Ghostland. These are just haunted houses; they're haunted houses with histories, rather bloody, deadly histories. You see, the owners of Ghostland are in possession of technology that not only makes ghosts visible, but more or less keeps them imprisoned within their respective haunts. Unbeknownst to Lillian, Ben's reason for going is to destroy Garrote House. He suspects that Rex Garrote is alive and living within the house, and he (Garrote) is determined to follow through with the plans outlined in one of his books, and that is to open the doorway to the other side to allow the spirits to come through and create their Hell on Earth.

Opening day at a theme park that, through the magic of modern technology, keeps the ghosts on display like so many cage-crazy zoo animals, what could possibly go wrong? Before you can say Casper the Friendly Ghost, the park is on lockdown, and nobody is allowed in or out. That includes the ghosts, who are once again trapped within this giant snowglobe (minus the snow) by a containment field. Also trapped behind the park's walls are Lillian and Ben and hundreds of other people, all trying to find a way out before the ghosts start using them as target practive.

When I started reading Ghostland, despite the age of the characters, I wasn't expecting a young adult (YA) novel, but that's what I got, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I just wasn't expecting it. And just because it's YA, that doesn't mean Ralston holds back on the blood, guts, and gore, because he doesn't. He's also created a wonderful cast of characters (good guys and bad guys) that you quickly become invested in, and you are often left sitting on the edge of your seat hoping, as they battle ghost after ghost after ghost, that they come out of this unscathed, especially considering Ben's delicate condition. There's also an assortment of secondary characters, both living and dead, some of who become unlikely allies as they attempt to escape from Ghostland. The pacing is relentless, and you are quickly swept up in the events as they unfold, and should you find yourself reading this on a day off from work or on the weekend, it's very likely you might finish this book in one sitting because once Garrote House has you under its spell, it doesn't want to let you go.

Don't let the idea that this is a YA novel dissuade you from picking it up. Ralston doesn't dumb down the narrative, like I've seen done in so many YA books, so even adults can enjoy this ghostly tale. Just be forwarned... This is the first of a trilogy.

It took me a while to realise how much I was enjoying Ghostland, which is by the author of the notorious WOOM, a book I love and have read multiple times. I'm more used to serious, traumatising horror, but this book has none of that. There's gore, yes, as well as death, peril and pain, but it's as much of an adventure as it is a piece of horror.
Fast paced, breezily written, and FUN, once Ghostland is moving it's simply action-packed setpiece after setpiece.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants a creepy, speedy read that's dripping with blood, ghouls and excitement.
    Wonderful.

Die Geschichte kommt sehr stark an einen meiner Lieblingsromane heran : Jurassic Park! Und man kann gut und gerne sagen das der Autor sein bestes gibt um diesem Werk zu huldigen. Was auch fast klappt. Diverse Stellen sind sehr blutig und kein Abenteuerroman für Jugendliche. Auch die Technik hinter dem Park ist interessant aber absoluter Quatsch.
