The Epic of Glenda Mesh Paperback – June 18, 2022

Christopher Fryer presents: THE EPIC OF GLENDA MESH
A modern retelling of “The Epic of Gilgamesh,” written in 2100 BC.
Glenda Mesh is a badass junior in high school who rules the modern-day city of Babylon like a monster because her parents are rich and she doesn’t care about anyone but herself. Who dares to stop her when she’s also the best track and field star in the country? No one, that’s who.
Until one day a red-headed orphan girl named Enkidu comes into town with a sad backstory and a grudge against tyrants like Glenda. When Glenda faces the reality that she’s become the villain in her own story, and sees the horrid legacy she’ll be leaving behind, she strives to change for the better. However, the only person willing to help her might be her new biggest rival.
In what she frames as a “Hero’s Quest,” Glenda will boldly take on the city of Babylon’s most heinous criminal in history. But when you’re chasing down a psychopath that even the cops are avoiding, it might be a sign that she’s getting in over her head. Chances are, it'll only get worse from there.
Being a villain is easy. Being a hero is hard.
How will Glenda overcome a madman, a drug lord, a stalker, and an angry bull, and still expect to see the end of her junior year? Add in the stress of school, awkward family dinners, track meets with her rival, and a growing fear of death… Glenda Mesh will be tested in every way possible. It will be epic, to say the least.
Inspired by “The Epic of Gilgamesh,” written in Ancient Mesopotamia in 2100 BC, this novel puts a twist on that ancient tale by reversing genders, playing with the themes, and modernizing the plot. Though previous knowledge of the source material isn’t necessary, it does add a neat layer to the novel, and it’s recommended to look into after reading.
You’ll enjoy this book if you like: coming of age stories, gritty narratives, harrowing situations, family struggles, and complicated relationships, with ancient themes of finding purpose, overcoming challenges, handling grief, understanding love, and the want for immortality.
Read THE EPIC OF GLENDA MESH to discover Glenda’s fate. Will her Hero’s Quest end with her achieving a legacy to be proud of, or will her heroic endeavors send her to an early grave?

- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2023The Epic Of Glenda Mesh is a modern day retelling of The Epic Of Gilgamesh. A booked etched on clay tablets dated around 2100 BC, which is said to be the oldest written book found on Earth. Christopher Fryer did an amazing job recreating this historical tale in a world evolving around troubled teenagers, flawed adults and political corruption. LIke the original's 12 tablets, this story is broken into 12 parts of its own. Each section has a different theme going which then merge together into one epic tale.
Fryer gives us two fierce female MCs who are as different as night and day. Enkidu is an orphan who knows too much about survival and not enough about love. After finally landing in a stable home, she will do just about anything to hold onto what she values. Everyone in Babylon knows of Glenda Mesh. She lives in the big mansion on the hill and she's not afraid to take what's hers. So entitled, she isn't afraid to take what isn't hers either. A bit of a bully, she wreaks havoc in school and all about town. Everyone is afraid of Glenda Mesh until the day Enkidu comes to challenge her.
Within this story both Enkidu and Glenda Mesh will face many challenges that will have them questioning the type of women they want to be. A true coming of age as each undergoes a full transformation while they live through many difficult days.
This was a fantastic story that just kept giving and giving. It had some amazing lessons hidden inside. After reading this I did some research into the original story of Gilgamesh and was even more impressed by Christopher Fryer's skills. He did an amazing job hitting on key points of the original while creating a work of art all his own.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2022I'll admit, it took me a bit to get into this book. But that says more about me than about the story. I always struggle to keep characters straight in my head until I really get to know them. I didn't really make the connection (that was clearly spelled out in the introduction - my bad) between this story and the ancient text of Gilgamesh, so I was kind of confused by the odd names. Fortunately for me, the writing made me want to know more about the characters in the story, and soon, I was engrossed in the plot and read as much as I could each night before finally tearing myself away to get some sleep. I really enjoyed the mystery and the heroics of the protagonists as they pursued the truth. What I enjoyed more, though, was the sage wisdom about the folly of being immortal and the lessons Glenda learned on her path toward redemption. Now that I've finished the book, I want to read the ancient text of Gilgamesh to do a kind of backward comparison.
Some might call it a young adult novel, but I think it's a novel for anyone young adult or older. There are some gory scenes and some mature themes, but nothing that would offend anyone but the most prudish of readers.
That this story parallels an ancient story (albeit with clever twists and modernization) is a bonus to the engrossing nature of this page-turner. Highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2022This book is for all ages. I loved getting to know and understand Glenda Mesh. The author’s description of the characters and their transformation made reading this book not only exciting but very believable. I would recommend this book to parents, teachers, grandparents, great grandparents, and young adults

- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2023The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of my favorite stories. I was eager to see how Christopher would recreate this ancient tale in a modern setting. He succeeded in illuminating the story's major themes of personal redemption, heroic self-sacrifice, and reckoning with the finality of death in a way that felt relevant to our time. I found it comforting to read the original names of people and places, rather like familiar landmarks along the trail. The characters were compelling; I cared about them. I could not put this book down!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2022The Epic of Glenda Mesh is a modern retelling of the myth of Gilgamesh, and while I can't say I'm familiar with the mythology, I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
The themes involve life and death as well as the concept of immortality and what it means to be immortal, all of which I very much enjoyed. It’s part coming-of-age, part action and adventure, part romance, and more. I for one love when genres get mixed together like this, and while it may sound like too much, it works. After all, it reads like a myth, an epic, a legend, which happens to be my favorite thing about this novel.
Yes, the Epic of Glenda Mesh is a sprawling tale with large and various story arcs, much like a classical myth. Indeed, a lot happens, and we read as characters (mainly the two main ones) grow and evolve due to the events of the story, making them feel three-dimensional, not flat. These are characters that do not stay stagnant. No, they grow and mature, which is refreshing. How they view one another changes over the course of the novel, too, also feeling authentic. And at the same time, they also never feel like they become entirely new characters, as if their personalities were magically altered for no logical reason. No, their evolutions feel natural given what happens to them, and it makes for a great read once you reach the end because you see just how far they’ve come, exactly like a hero from a classical myth.
The Epic of Glenda Mesh is a fast-paced novel that’s easy to dive into. It’ll keep you on your toes with what happens next and it’ll stay with you once you finish that last page. Check it out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I've never read Gilgamesh, so I can't comment on similarities or how this is specifically reimagined but blimey... it's a heck of a read. Great characters, superb writing and a story that takes a little getting into but which then grabs you by the proverbials and doesn't let go! Humour, drama, emotion and a fine dash of realism (people die, for example) make it an outstanding read. I was honestly surprised that this is both YA (I'm several decades older) and self-published, it's THAT good.
