The Gift of Believing (Matters of the Heart Book 1) Kindle Edition
A standalone book in The Heart of the Holidays, a gay YA series celebrating love.
Presley James has spent his entire life being told that he’s too much. Neither his parents, teachers, or even peers know how to handle the sometimes loud, occasionally impulsive, and always scatter-brained young man. Then he meets Garrett Harper.
Garrett is used to being left behind due to his poor health. So when Presley and his quirks crash into his life, his quiet existence is turned upside down. After a lifetime of being let down by everyone except his father, Garrett is reluctant to trust that Presley is really understanding of all his limitations.
When the boys start to spend more of the most wonderful time of the year together, their budding feelings begin to grow. Thanks to the magic of the Christmas season, these two broken boys may not only learn what it means to trust in somebody else, but most importantly, to believe in yourself.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSuch a beautiful Christmas novella of two teens being able to find happiness when they always thought they were too much. Garret has had health issues his whole life making it hard for him to meet and interact with people outside his small bubble, Presley has mental health issues (adhd) that his family don't have the decency to try to understand. When these two have a chance meeting than another, their lives intertwine to show both the other is worth giving a chance for.
Such a beautiful YA novella that I highly recommend giving a chance if looking for a book that deals with real life yet leaves you with hope at the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love this story and it's soft beginnings. We get to see two young men build first and friendship and then a romance. This story is short but packs in a lot of feelings. The epilogue really makes the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen you battle a medical or mental disability every day it's easy to lose yourself. You start to expect people to leave you before even giving them a chance. Presley and Garrett are young men struggling with issues that would bury a lot of adults, and yet, they both secretly hope to find that one person that gets them. A chance meeting at a coffee shop is the start of a friendship that will prove deeper and stronger than either expected.
I loved how the author didn't try to sugarcoat the boys problems or their struggles. I felt deeply connected to the characters and was completely rooting for their happily ever after. This is a short holiday story that I know I will re-read again and again because it's filled with such positive energy and hope. Truly lovely book!

- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really liked the way the author illuminated some of the more troublesome aspects of the main characters' disabilities without harping on them excessively. I loved that these young men met as teenagers, at crossroads, where their lives were altered so differently from where they were headed. It's amazing that just one person at the right place, at the right time, can be the difference between a life of isolation and a world of love and laughter.
Just because, I would have loved to know what happened (in detail) in that 10 year gap that led them to the altar.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a story of 2 teenagers falling in love. They both have issues and there’s a lot of hurt/comfort.
The story could have been a touch longer. It’s a quick read but the author took the time to build a solid foundation for the 2 MC’s that way when you read the epilogue you can see how their life would have beautifully unfolded for them.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI beautiful young adult m/m romance.
Physical illness one teenager trapped in his body.
ADHD stifles the other and his interactions with family.
Together they build a wonderful world.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis review is for the entire series.
First, you will probably never read any kind of novel that even closely resembles the first in the series--The Gift of Believing. That's because you will never come across two teenage characters as unique and beautifully developed as Presley and Garrett.
Second, do read the blurb for each book. None of them can be considered to be stand alones. Each book revolves around Garrett and Presley's relationship and the two most important men in their lives.
They are Garrett's father Robert in The Art of Living and Robert's long time best friend Jared in The Freedom of Loving. The only other characters that matter are Niall and Sam, who are deeply involved with both the YA duo and Robert and Jared respectively.
Third, get ready for several important sections of each book appearing identically in the others, a brilliant maneuver which allows you to follow timelines and relationships easily.
Finally, get ready for three completely blockbuster Epilogues, which when you're finished with the last book will move you to shed tears--of joy, rather than stress or anxiety.
Extraordinary, plain and simple.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and adorable
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA lovely sweet story honestly I think this might be my favourite couple of Abrianna's. They're so bloody adorable I can't cope.
I love their first kiss and how it was a bit awkward because they're learning together.
Love the TJ Klune and Hunger games references, which made them so relatable!!
There were moments that left me teary eyed with a serious lump in my throat but mostly I was just filled up with love for these boys!

4.0 out of 5 stars Garret and Presley’s story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is such a sweet, realistic story of firsts, with teenage angst, hope and the festive season.
Loved the nod to a PNR mm author’s book I adore too.
Both face health challenges, meeting by chance in a coffee shop. Their instant rapport, second guessing each other’s intent and hopefully friendship is refreshing.
“𝒴𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒶𝓁 𝒽𝑒𝒶𝓁𝓉𝒽 𝒹𝑜𝑒𝓈𝓃’𝓉 𝓂𝑒𝒶𝓃 𝓎𝑜𝓊’𝓇𝑒 𝓁𝑒𝓈𝓈 𝓉𝒽𝒶𝓃 𝒶𝓃𝓎𝑜𝓃𝑒 𝑒𝓁𝓈𝑒. 𝐼𝓉 𝒿𝓊𝓈𝓉 𝓂𝑒𝒶𝓃𝓈 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝑒𝓍𝓅𝑒𝓇𝒾𝑒𝓃𝒸𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝓌𝑜𝓇𝓁𝒹 𝒹𝒾𝒻𝒻𝑒𝓇𝑒𝓃𝓉𝓁𝓎 𝓉𝒽𝒶𝓃 𝑜𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓇𝓈 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝓉𝒽𝒶𝓉’𝓈 𝓃𝑜𝓉 𝒶 𝒷𝒶𝒹 𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓃𝑔.”
Garret expects rejection and judgement, as does Presley. To the contrary, they connect and support each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good feels
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGetting by as best they can, the health problems faced by the protagonists have become how they feel their identity - until they find each other and realize that they each can be a person, not a medical condition, and those persons are just right for each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story with the ability to heal you
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseRead with KU, but will be bought, too!!
This little story about two teenagers with huge challenges is a magical story where christmas has just a side role.
It is at times sad and seems unfair what each person has to overcome or endure but there is a positive development from the point the two main characters meet.
It has an epiloque which makes the story even more believeable. This short story is a gem and I will reread it for sure.
Recommended for people with sensitive hearts of all ages.
