Godsend (Hell Yeah! Heritage) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 473 ratings

Godsend is the first novel in the Hell Yeah! Heritage series. If you ever wondered where those
McCoy men came from…these historical novels will take you to their beginnings. Deeply sensual stories of romance and adventure, they will capture your imagination and your heart.
History is definitely worth repeating.

Thrust from his home, Austin McCoy travels west to build a new life for himself in the wilds of Texas. Civilization has not yet arrived to the wilderness where he settles and his nearest neighbor is more than two days’ journey through Indian territory alive with bear, cougar and wolves. While difficult, carving out an existence amidst these dangers is not what weighs heavily on his heart. With nothing and no one to share his days, Austin is lost. The answer to his prayers comes from a very unexpected source…

Jolie Dumas has also been torn from the only home she has ever known. The beloved daughter of a plantation owner and his quadroon mistress, she is horrified to be sold into slavery after the death of her parents. Bought and paid for, she is chained and walked from New Orleans to Texas. Before she can be delivered to her master, the slave trader is killed and Jolie escapes. Alone and vulnerable, she seeks a safe place to hide, not knowing the sanctuary she finds may end up being the one place she truly belongs.

When Austin opens his heart and home to the beautiful woman, he has no idea the future she faces. Knowing what awaits her if anyone finds out the truth, Jolie hides her identity from him. Having been betrayed before by those she trusted, she has no idea that in Austin’s eyes she could not be more perfect.
She is his Godsend.

Every time I start a new book by Sable Hunter, I am reminded that she was one of the authors that rekindled my love of reading. Her writing style flows from the page, engulfing the reader fully into the story. I was curious when she delved into the historical fiction genre and as I read Godsend I was so happy she took the leap.
This book is an amazing read, with heartfelt characters and enough action and passion to push the story along. Austin may be my favorite McCoy, after Aaron, of course. While he is a hard-working man with hopes for his future in his adopted home of Texas, his loneliness and vulnerability are kept close to the vest. He dreams of sharing his life with someone, but in the wilds of Texas prior to the Civil War, women are far from easy to meet.
When Jolie unexpectedly drops into his life, he is elated and begins to dream of a future. However, she holds secrets of her past and her family heritage. What begins as an act of compassion and care on the part of Austin, quickly evolves into something else. Jolie is an enigma to those around her, when her secrets are revealed, danger is sure to follow. Jolie is a beautiful, brave woman, full of compassion and knowledge from her grandmother that proves helpful to both Native Americans and the white settlers.
The road to Jolie and Austin's HEA is bumpy, but so worth the ride. If you are a fan of historicals this book is for you, especially if you have never read Ms. Hunter's work. It is a great introduction to her style and the depth of passion and characterization she puts in her books. I am anxiously waiting another historical from this author, but in the meantime I will pick up one of her Hell Yeah books to read.

This is a complex book but then so is the history of the United States. From land-grabbers to slavery, it is covered in this book. The "one-drop" rule that was intent on dividing families, friends and communities, was brought out in the storyline. It was the theory that if a person had "one-drop" of blood that was not white, they were indeed an Indian, slave or whatever nationality that was not white. This, of course, was designed to promote slavery of more and more people. Individuals were actually "bought, sold, owned" because they were a quadroon which was one-fourth black. It could be generations before the 1800's but that one-drop made them a slave. Jolie was educated, raised as a child with love, devotion and from a father who didn't actually live with them. Later, after several years of changes in her life, she met Austin who simply adored her. This storyline is deep, emotional and no doubt many aspects are reality of our history. I enjoyed Jolie being Austin's godsend.

I am reciting just part of this very special story here. The story begins in Nacogdoches, Texas with a very happy family and the announcement by John Belmont that he wants to take Louisa Dumas, his Quadroon mistress, the love of his life, and mother of daughter Juliette Jolie, on a special trip to New Orleans. The trip is for just the two of them on a leisurely steamboat trip down the Mississippi. Tragically, the happy occasion ends in the deaths of John and Louisa due to the steamboat’s explosion. Jolie must journey to Oak Hill where she meets Uncle Felix Belmont, mother-in-law, Dora Belmont, John’s wife, Lisette and John’s friendly young daughter, Charlotte. Juliet learns very quickly learns the meaning of what it means to be a Quadroon, how a drop of blood determines, her fate, and that she is despised by both Dora and Lisette. Those feelings are made clear after Felix Belmont dies. Jolie, along with two other women, is sold off as slaves by Lisette and Dora. After a harrowing experience involving Coffi, a nasty, abusive slave trader, whose life is ended by a bear. She is left in the woods, alone and hungry, her clothes are tattered. One of the two slaves who accompanied her is dead but headed for home. Jolie must fend for herself. She does not know which direction to go but she has her Grandmere’s healing gifts and cooking skills but no wilderness skills. For the tired, lost, and disillusioned Jolie, a miracle occurs. I leave the rest of the story to you. I think you will like this combination of adventure, historical romance and science fiction.

This story starts and ends in the here and now; the majority takes place in Louisiana and Texas from 1816 to roughly 1827. A story passed on through generations of McCoy's? Jolie is a little girl surrounded by the love of her black mother and white father, grandmere and cousin, Abraham. When her parents die in a riverboat accident, she is taken to the "big house" by her uncle, who seems to care for her, to live. She meets Charlotte, a cousin the same age, 11, and is blissfully happy until the uncle's wife and mother make it clear that she is nothing more than a slave to them. Years later when the uncle dies also, Jolie, who appears white, is sold to a vicious slave trader by the wife!

Thus begins a saga we have heard often, but still cannot grasp the horror of a frequently beaten and raped slave. Yes, this is a love story, surrounded by a slave culture during a time when there is a fight for land in an area of Mexico known as Texas. The characterizations and dialogue are well-done; the storyline and historical facts are fascinating!

Sable Hunter, the author, has given us a look into history where the excuse of color was used to justify inhumanity; in our age, there is no excuse, I couldn't help thinking about as I read her book. Be assured, though, you will enjoy an amazing, heartwarming, hot, but sweet love story! A really good read!

I wasn't sure at first about buying this novel. Mainly because I have never heard of the author Sable Hunter before. But I am pleased that I took the risk. I found it being on of those novels, that you can't wait until you the reach the last page, at the same time never wanting too. A truly entertaining read and love story rolled into one. All Hell Yeah fans will love this book about the history of the McCoy family tree, and Sable you have written a really intriguing book about the history of the time and how love and fate can conquer even the worst of situations. Slavery and people being bought and sold and land being fought over in the wilderness and civilization trying to survive. Love this book and look forward to many more in the Hell Yeah Heritage Series.

Another brilliant book from Sable Hunter. This pre-dates the whole Hell Yeah Series but does so in such a clever way that is has links, some more obvious than others, to several books/characters in the series. A stunning read especially if you are a fan of the Hell Yeah series, if you've not yet read any still give this a go you'll love it.
Eagerly looking forward to more in this series both the main and the heritage
