Review

"In The Last City, Keys has conjured a magnificently terrifying dystopian world worthy of Justin Cronin's Passage Series, but with a young adult flavor. Her work defies easy genre classification, but should be compelling to all fans of speculative fiction." Julian North Bestselling Author of the Young Adult Dystopian Age of Order

From the Author

My very first series and still the one I love most. Dystopian fiction has a way of reeling you in and never letting you go. I hope you enjoy this cast of characters and yes, I am working on book four as we speak!

All I want to know is, Where is book #2? Is there a book 2 coming? Because I need it now!! This was awesome!! Really great writing, mystery, characters...
There's nothing like YA zombie dystopian to break up the monotony of formulaic contemporary romance.
Recommended by book friend Eunice, I jumped at the chance when the Audible became available. Great narration. The narrator did a great range of accents and characters to perfection, and held my attention.
I felt disoriented at times, trying to work out what's happening. That is part of the fun, peeling back layers, seeking answers. You have to work for it. I'll also be quite frank, this does not paint a pretty picture. It can be bleak, yet offset with some really interesting characters, and tight writing.
The feeling I had whilst listening to the action sequences, was that this book has a very strong Manga feel.
By 95%, I realised that it was coming to an end too quickly without resolving a lot of things I needed answers for. It's an intense ride that I had difficulty in putting down. This is in fact a standalone, and does in fact end with answers right up to the end. It also leaves you wanting more.

I was given an ARC of Gods of Anthem to review by the author, and while I'm sure she sees it as a favor, I'm certain I came out ahead on this one.

I'm not usually much for dystopian or YA anything, but GoA had me hooked from the beginning. It's hard not to empathize with Liza as she struggles throughout the story to come to grips with her own existence, and Tommy, who wants nothing more than to be normal. The two of them redefine the term "unlikely allies" on their quest.

Rather than show us yet another band of survivors in a zombie apocalypse, we find the world having adapted to the crisis. Still, Gods of Anthem is no rosy, all-is-well, feel-good story, so brace yourself.

Logan Keys has penned an entertaining, cautionary tale about survival at any cost, with subtle jabs at the idea of totalitarian rule in the name of safety. A dark and disturbing, but still fun read that proves that not all YA fiction is light and without substance, Gods of Anthem will keep you enthralled from start to finish.

My girls said you have to read this book. It's on my top ten. So I picked it up mainly knowing that it was dystopian and that my girls never steer me wrong. The first few chapters were a bit of information overload and seemed like we were trying to cram some stuff in there quick but once that was out the way it was smooth sailing.

Liza was the daughter of a composer and a ballerina. Music has been her whole life until she gets sick with cancer and sent to live on an island where they claim to heal the sick. Meanwhile the countries are being overrun by zombies and nations are crumbling. Tommy is a soldier and he's been training to fight the hordes. He has an interesting "condition" so he fights slightly different than the others in his platoon. When he finally gets orders to head back to his home county hes elated yet sad. He has to leave behind JoJo his bitey little friend whos like a sibling to him. Once he reaches the mainland mayhem ensues.

I don't want to give too much away. I want people to go into it with an empty mind. The book has lots of character growth and learning about love. I went from rage to heartbreak in seconds. So many mysteries to unravel you're always second guessing yourself to the very end. Logan Keys weaves an interesting dystopian world. She makes you feel for these people as if they were your own. I cant wait to read the next book in the series.

I've picked this book as I needed a dystopian novel for my r/fantasy Bingo challenge and Last City has favorable reviews on both goodreads and Amazon. After finishing the book I fail to see why it's rated so high.

The Last City is a young adult zombie dystopian tale that faces all odds in a post-apocalyptic world. We follow stories of two characters - Liza and Tommy. As it's YA both are oh so special but happily not in naive or overly cliché way. The book is told from both Liza and Tommy’s POV’s and their stories were separate almost the entire way through the book. They intertwined in the end of the book culminating in cliffhanger that's supposed to make you instantly get second book. I'll just say final twist didn't surprise me.

Characters aren't bad but the truth is I'm not able to relate to them. Liza was sent off to die - that’s what happens to these with cancer in this world. They’re just sent away to die. Everyone around her at the hospital is dying from cancer due to radiation permeating the planet. Somehow though Liza survives and recovers. She gains extra-strenth. It seems though that first she had to die. I won’t say more not to spoil things for you.

Tommy is a Special - a living weapon gifted with special skills through painful body alterations. There are all kind of specials in the book – Tommy is Hulk. Almost literally. When he feels strong emotions, especially anger, he goes Hulk – he quadruples in size and becomes unstoppable war machine. Tommy was ok and more interesting than Liza to me but truth be told the only character I cared for is a side character called Joelle – teen girl turned vampire by crazy scientist. She’s innocent and deadly in the same time. Great material for further development. I just hope she’ll survive what’s to come.

What puts me off this book is Liza’s romance plot with Jeremy. It’s irritating. I’m pretty sure that target YA audience may enjoy it (Liza’s love interest has purple eyes, charisma and all) but to me some passages describing their relation and Liza’s feelings / love experiences felt like taken from Harlequin novel. All this stuff about love being love feels indigestible to me. As I’m, sadly, YA no more and my view of human relations is far from idealistic or romantic, I strongly dislike YA romances. I wanted to skip these parts but I didn’t. They were written in a way I would describe as a little cheap but it’s just my opinion.

Happily there’s a lot of other things going on in this book, and romance is just a small (but irritating) part of the plot.

There are some twists – many readers seem genuinely surprised by them. I wasn’t. The story felt rather predictable. I mean we’ve all seen it comic books, movies and other books. There are some minor inconsistencies and things that remain untold or feel rushed. To be honest I’m not sure why Tommy went into the training and why, at the end of the training, he was chosen to lead.
I’m not sure if I’ll read the sequel but if I do it won’t be for Tommy or Liza. It’ll be for Joelle who genuinely interested me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb and suspenseful

    Nicole @ Nic's Novel Idea

I have an absolute aversion to anything sci-fi or post-apocolyptic so when the opportunity presented itself to review a book in a genre I really had no care for I was both eager to step out of my comfort zone as well as anxious as I was pretty much prejudiced against it from the start. However, I made it through chapter one, more than eager and interested to continue on.
Gods of Anthem is a YA dystopian novel set in a fairly bleak world riddled with illness and ruled through fear but with a band of a few brave warriors set to make their mark against those oppressors. It's in this strange altered world that Liza is sent back to, after having been exiled on an island for the sick. what was incredibly original about Gods of Anthem was the dual points of view in this new age. Liza is the oppressed heroine while mutated soldier Tommy is in training for the dark side of the law, tortured and brainwashed. Logan is able to give these two brilliant and unique protagonists their own distinctive voice and experiences, thus giving the reader an all encompassing thrill ride of a read.

'...He told me I balance his life. This is worrisome. What I don't tell him is that he's like four people in one and I'm in no position to balance that type of chaos. What I don't tell him is that he cuts me deeply by punishing me with his lack of visits for asking him the tough questions as a real friend might. Or how I've never been so angry in all my life when I'd realise that's what he'd done. What I don't say is, "How dare you!" And what he doesn't say, I notice, is that he's sorry."

Logan is a magician with words, each sentence she creates and the inner musings from her characters lures you in, lyrical and masterful and emotive- you're angry when you should be and upset or annoyed where it's warranted. The storyline is everything I should hate in a book and have in the past but somehow I have found myself needing more, more of Logan's incredibly mature prose and more of the stalwart and beautiful Liza and misunderstood and complicated Tommy. It's dark and angst-filled and simply stunning in every way. I can honestly say this book would make a terrific movie someday.

4.0 out of 5 stars So so good!!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 10, 2015
OK. Imagine The Hunger Games and The Walking Dead had a baby. Then imagine The 5th Wave and The Avengers had a baby. Now imagine those 2 babies growing up and having their own baby. That, my friends, is Gods Of Anthem.

The writing style is so reminiscent of Rick Yancey that I was hooked from the get go. The characterization was just so on point, the world building was so fresh, despite its familiar qualities. And the action was perfect for a first book of a series. So often have I read books that give it all up in the opening novel that the sequels fall short. I really get the sense that Keys is holding back her best and building up for a gripping and explosive series. I'm so excited at what is next to come!

So lets get into the nitty gritty. My one thing that I wasn't super keen on was the only thing that stopped me from giving the book a full 5 stars, and that was the vampire element. Vampire's are not really my thing so I wasn't really into Joelle as a character, and at this point I think she could have not been there and it not have effected the story in any way. I'm happy to be proven wrong later in the series if she comes back into it in an important way later and the vampire element becomes integral, but for now, that was my only one downside.

Liza - Liza is a very interesting character, and whilst she wasn't my favourite, she made a great MC. I love how strong she is despite of how broken she is, and I love that she speaks up for injustice.

Jeremy - Well! I didn't see that coming! That is all I can say on this. Just READ it if you want to know what I mean!!!

Tommy - Tommy was by far my favourite character. I loved reading his story a bit more, loved how it came together at the end, literally cannot wait for the next book!

Nate - My favourite secondary character. I hope we see him again. I couldn't stop smiling when he pulled that baseball bat out from behind the crucifix! What a badass!

I'm pretty into Zombies, and I really liked the idea that in this world, you don't necessarily die from a zombie bite.

Ugh, I don't want to say too much and give spoilers, so I think I will stop with just this; To sum up - if you are into dystopian novels, love a good rebellion and likewise, into crossing genres, DEFINITELY read GODS OF ANTHEM!

5.0 out of 5 stars A well paced page turner.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 14, 2015
Until nearly the end of the book, you go back and forth between two stories, told side by side from the point of view of two people, leading totally separate lives. You know they are going to link up, but you don't know how.

There's mystery, suspense, action and romance. Real characters with depth and emotions. Some amazing world-building and a unique plot.

There are some 'slow' moments, but that just gives you chance to breath.
All in all it's a well paced page turner.

The ending leaves a lot of questions unanswered, which sets you up for the next book.

I can't wait for the sequel!

To be honest I did not like this story. It is well written. The characters are dysfunctional though that is due to the world they live in.
