No Going Back: A gripping murder mystery full of twists and turns (The Downland Murder Mysteries Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

Be careful who you trust.

When journalist Harry Lawson is pulled from a private swimming pool, his drowning looks like a tragic accident, but for one small detail – he knew someone was going to kill him.

The three text messages he fired off to an old flame the night before confirm he’s a troubled man. But former friend and sleuth, Kent Fisher, believes the messages hint at something deeper and more sinister – an investigation that cost Harry his life.

When a second reporter dies, it’s clear there’s a killer with unfinished business.

As Kent inches towards a breakthrough, his close friend Detective Inspector Ashley Goodman instructs him to stop investigating, fearing for his safety.

But Kent knows there’s no going back, even though he risks losing a friend, and maybe his own life.

Oh my goodness, this series is just

This series gets better each time. 20th May 2021.

You will
fall in love with the characters and will enjoy every second. 24th May 2021.

I would absolutely recommend reading this book, with various parts to this story coming together at the end, keeping you guessing at every stage, the creation of this
whodunit mystery is another marvel! 29th May 2021.

Settled into what was a
complex and engrossing murder mystery with loads of twists and red herrings to keep me glued to the pages right to the end. 2nd June 2021.

Once again he has produced
another brilliant read, with enough intrigue to keep you guessing right up to the end as to his crime solving, while at the same time giving you an insight into his beloved animal sanctuary and other familiar characters. 6th June 2021.

As always, the writing is
sharp and witty and there are plenty of laughs along the way, while the author keeps the pace thundering along like an out-of-control Jethro Tull steam train. 7th June 2021.

I had at least three different potential murderers in mind as the story progressed, none of which were right! I totally recommend this book (and the whole series). And
what a way to end the book. 12th July 2021.

A complex plot with
excellent characterisation and some cracking one liners. 21st August 2021.

The twists and turns of the plot kept me
page turning, and like other readers I had different people being the murderer, but didn't guess the real one. 7th December 2021.

If you enjoy reading fresh and exciting murder mysteries with a distinctive sleuth, memorable characters and complex, twisting plots, the Downland Series may be just what you’re looking for?

With contemporary themes and characters, irreverent humour and a touch of romance, the Downland Murder Mysteries bring a fresh twist to the classic whodunit.

By combining my love of crime fiction with my experiences as an environmental health officer, my murder mysteries are for readers who like to curl up with a cosier, entertaining type of crime novel, filled with characters they can grow to love.

The series should appeal to readers who like authors such as Richard Osman, Elly Griffiths, Agatha Christie, Clare Chase or Sue Grafton.

I am late to this series, which must be corrected because No Going Back is the seventh in the very fascinating Kent Fisher series. He is a private sleuth, runs an animal sanctuary in the South Downs of England’s southeastern coast, has a troubled love life and too many balls in the air. Then his estranged friend from years ago, Harry Lawson, is found dead in his swimming pool. Harry was an investigative journalist. Kent suspects that’s it’s no accident.

Harry sent three unhappy texts to his ex on the night before he died. The texts concerned an investigation that Kent believes may have cost Harry his life. Then a second reporter dies, and Kent seeks the link between the two. Twists and surprises follow as Kent investigates with increasing determination, despite insistence from his friend D.I. Ashley Goodman that he stay out of it. Fat chance. Kent risks losing his old friend and even his life in finding the truth.

From this reviewer’s American perspective, what is different and fascinating is reading about, for example, the local vet showing up “smelling of cattle in her jeans and wellingtons speckled with muck and straw;” or Kent himself, a sleuth but also a man fretting that his “animals are safe and well and there’s no damage to the barns after heavy rains.” There are lots of detective novels, but THIS is what appealed to me. It was as if James Herriot, author of All Things Great and Small, came back as a detective of the charming English countryside, although with occasional brawls in pubs and with cranky local officials. There are some wonderfully funny moments (love British sarcasm), and a dog named Columbo who is…well, you’ll have to read it. This is delightful. Five stars!

I have been following this author since book No 1 "No Accident" and he's never once disappointed in his style of writing murder mystery novels.
Once again he has produced another brilliant read, with enough intrigue to keep you guessing right up to the end as to his crime solving, while at the same time giving you an insight into his beloved animal sanctuary and other familiar characters.
I personally feel that this book is his best to date - but don't take my word for it, read them for yourself as I'm sure you'll not be disappointed and despite having just finished book No 7, I'm already eagerly awaiting book No 8.

I have enjoyed reading this book. The story is well planned and plotted throughout .

The rapport and dynamics between the various characters flow continuously with plenty of witty interactive dialogue.

Thought provoking ending! Did a mystery presented itself? Or has Happiness abandoned Kent? Either way Kent has a problem.
