The Golden Handcuffs: MM Contemporary Romance (Pursuit of Love Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 112 ratings

In pursuit of a fresh start, Finley finds more than an awakening when he falls for a mysterious Dom.

Grieving the loss of his son, Finley flees his idyllic island life for the bustle of inner-city London. There, he falls down a BDSM rabbit hole when he scores a job at The Golden Handcuffs. Having never experienced true connection before, Finley begins to unearth desires he never knew existed, and quickly becomes fascinated with a Dom who brings his deepest fantasies to life.

Kage may be alone, but he’s not lonely. After an accident left him with a limp and a shattered heart, he knows he’ll never find love again. But he’s fine with that. Working as a Dom, helping people find or lose themselves under his touch is his life’s calling. But when a man with green eyes and hair like fire kneels before him on his stage, his whole world flips upside down. Finley might be the only person who understands his trauma, which sends Kage’s walls crumbling down.
Two broken men can’t form a wholesome relationship.

But can they help each other and create a bond that transcends grief and embraces an alternative lifestyle? Neither Finley nor Kage are ready to find out. Yet.

Another fantastic book in this series. We met Finley before in The Sinner’s Penance, which was one of top five books in 2023. We met the other MC Kage as well, but we got only a glimpse of him.

Finley was working in a distillery run by the Polish Mafia and lost his son in a hit by the Irish Mafia. This was the second child he had lost in his life. His Don allowed him to move to London to get away from the small island which held too many bad memories for him. The distillery and the island were featured in The Sinner's Penance.

Finley ends up working as a bartender and a security person in a BDSM in London where Kage works as a Dom putting on public scenes. Kage has also had loss in his life. He survived an auto accident which took the life of his boyfriend/Dom eight years before the story began. Finley is working one night and watches one of Kage's scenes which awakens a desire in him. I know that is a wholly overused phrase, but I'm just the reviewer, not the writer. Anyone can see where the story goes from here, with some angst thrown in for good measure.

The author uses a lot of tropes and it doesn't seem like it the book would be that good, but in the hands of a lesser author, it wouldn't be. However, this author is one of my favorites even after two books. This book is on my top five list for the year. She, and boy was I surprised to find out she was a she, captures the relationship between these two men so well. The spicy scenes were near perfect. The angst isn't overwrought, but realistic. Men aren't the brightest of creatures sometimes and Kage and Finley are perfect examples.

I tagged drug and alcohol abuse because of Kage. He survived the auto accident that killed his boyfriend. However, it left him with a injured leg that never healed correctly. There's a scene towards the end where Finley calls him out on his use of pain pills. I'm so glad the author included it. Kage was an addict. He hid pills in his clothing for when he needed them. He did know enough not to mix them with alcohol.

The supporting characters were fantastic and fleshed out enough without overpowering the two main characters. There's a plot point that I'm still not sure was necessary, but I won't spoil the book by mentioning it. Read it for yourself.

I highly recommend this. It's spicy and romantic and exciting and just a great read.

We met Finley in Mat and Peyton’s book. A broken man due to the loss of two children and under the mafias thumb. With the Don’s blessing, he starts new in London and at the club bartending and as security. Kage, broken and going through life on autopilot after the loss of his Dom, is now a Dom at the club. He keeps himself apart from his friends but Finley restarts a fire in him. Finley is mesmerized by Kage. The two have a lot in common and the path to figuring out their issues and working together to help one another is arduous but worth it. These two broken men find a path forward together. Good book.

I don't know a lot about finding the ONE, but thinking that self is not worth it is not right either. There are better fish out in the sea than me, was my mantra and still is to this day. THANKGOODNESS NOT EVERYONE THINKS THAT WAY. You find it, go for it! Don't overthink it! ENJOY!

You definitely don't need to read this series in any order to enjoy this book. Lots of hurt between these two and they learn to heal grow together while not forgetting their pasts. There could have been a bit more emotion written into some of the scenes and discussions about the past, seemed a little disconnected. Overall good story.

This book had a slow start and was actually a little hard to read for the first part. Some of the dialogue was really contrived and felt like the author was trying to get across information but it was done in a really clunky way. That did drop off as we got further into the story, but didn’t go away entirely.

I do think the author did a good job at portraying dealing with your mental health and also with the way that people avoid it. I also liked that it didn’t feel like kink was replacing any sort of mental health treatment, as the mc did go to therapy towards the end of the book.

All in all, a good book dragged down by a clunky beginning.

What a great book. You don’t need to read any of the preceding books to enjoy this one. There is definitely some overlap of characters, and you would enjoy reading more about them, but this book can stand on its own. It’s about two men that have suffered much trauma in their lives. Leaving them both alone and without hope. Finley starts working at The Golden Handcuffs for a new start, Kage has been working there for years as a master Dom and trying to live one day at a time. Finley is very new to the BDSM culture but very interested. These two strong and loving men resist the connection they have but ultimately succumb to their HEA. It was a joy to read. It also has some of the hottest scenes I’ve read recently. I highly recommend this book. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written K1nk story

As much as this book by K C Carmine is a well written k1nk book it’s also a great story about love and learning to heal after trauma. Finley and Kage have both lost someone important to them and neither is looking for a relationship when they find each other. It’s a common type of story but Ms Carmine does a lovely job of balancing the k1nk and the developing relationship between the two men while still maintaining the plot about their trauma. I loved these two characters and my heart broke for them as I read the story. Characters from previous books in this series made cameos and added to the story. The descriptions of k1nky scenes can be problematic in books because it can take a long time to describe what only takes minutes in real life, but Carmine again gives us lovely hot takes that definitely made me picture them in my mind. Hopefully there will be more of this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book of finding love again after loss

Whilst this has bdsm themes, it is also a great book of two lost people finding love again after tragic loss. Though they meet at the Golden Handcuffs, where Kage is a Dom who demonstrates and Finley just started working as a bartender and security detail, they have a connection and realise they have more in common than they think. This is a slow burn as Finley has no experience with men or kink and Kage is reluctant to get involved again after his loss.

I loved watching them talk things through and grow together as a couple. They have a great extended family in their community and mcs from previous books make appearances as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Healing and heartwarming (and hot..)

Such a lovely (and spicy) story with Kage and Finley. Finley is dealing with the loss of his son, starting fresh at the Golden Handcuffs Club where he sees his first scene on stage by Master Kage. He is enthralled right away, but has never let himself explore this side of himself, if much of his feelings for men.

Kage, who is closed off behind big walls after losing his boyfriend in a car accident only takes on subs for public scenes but never anything more. But when he sees Finley, he is intrigued by him and by the way he watches his shows. When Finley applies to be his sub for a night he accepts, their scene is intense and the way Finley naturally submits to him intrigues him even more - and he starts breaking all his rules for Finley.

These two men have been through such grief and hardship, but seeing them learn to open up to each other and allow the support was so lovely! Plus all the dom/sub dynamics were fabulous too!
