Golden Tiger (The Heart of the West) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 120 ratings

From award-winning author, Liz Harris, comes an emotional tale of forbidden love, set in the south-west of the sweeping state of Wyoming.

Wyoming, 1870s

Found as a new born baby, her Chinese mother lifeless beside her, Charity Walker was given a home by an American mining family. But over the years, the mounting tensions between the growing numbers of Chinese immigrants and the locals see Charity shunned by both communities.

When Charity’s one friend, Joe, leaves the town, she finds herself isolated, and despite her reservations, she forms a friendship with the only other Chinese girl in the town, and finally starts to feel as if she belongs somewhere.

But finding a place to call home for a girl with a Chinese face, who dresses, speaks and behaves like an American, was never going to be that easy…

Golden Tiger is an unforgettable story of love that is perfect for readers of Penelope Williamson, Santa Montefiore, Dinah Jefferies, Kristin Hannah, Fiona Valpy and Colleen McCullough.

What readers said about Golden Tiger at the time the first edition was published, which was published under the title of The Lost Girl.

The Lost Girl is an outstanding novel about the power of love. It is set in Wyoming in the 1870s in a small mining town called Carter that is simmering with racial tension. Since the Chinese immigrants are prepared to work in the mines for much lower wages, the local Americans feel enormous resentment and racism towards them. This setting makes for a dramatic backdrop, and Liz Harris skilfully shows us both how this resentment forms. AngeCat (Amazon Review)

A carefully researched novel, the historical details are always relevant and never heavy-handed. I learned a lot about the period but it was Charity and Joe’s dilemma which kept me turning the pages. One World (Amazon Review)

A great read from Liz Harris. Liz has an uncanny eye for detail, and delivers those in a well-developed text with finely drawn characters. Charity and Joe are attractive protagonists. You want their struggles to succeed. I have no hesitation in recommending this. John Jackson (Amazon Review)

I was easily transported to the wild open spaces of Wyoming and I loved that it had a happy ending. I wanted to know more about the lives of Joe and Charity. I love a book that leaves me wanting more.
Eleanor Smythe (Amazon Review)

Writing about the clash of two cultures without making one of them come across as 'alien' is quite a challenge, but it's one which Liz Harris meets with admirable skill and depth. The complex politics of the situation provides a convincing backdrop for the story of adopted waif Charity Walker, torn as she is between two men: cowboy Joe Walker, who found and rescued her as a baby, and storekeeper Chen Fai. The finish is page-turningly gripping - you won’t put this book down. Margaret Pelling (Amazon Review)

Wow, what a great book! I thought I'd have a quick few pages before lights out, and at 1.30am, I was still turning pages! I love the story and the way the picture opens up from the dialogue between the characters and brings the reader into the time and place. I think it’s a brilliant story well presented. Well done. Anne Woodall (Amazon Review)

Liz Harris is a great narrator. The Lost Girl is a fantastic romantic story. I loved it from beginning to end. Suze Lavender (Amazon Review)

"Trapped between two cultures", as the title says, proves to lead to an extremely difficult life.

The story begins in Carter Town, Wyoming Territory in 1868. This was a time of struggle and change. This was a mining town who's people worked hard to survive a difficult life. The white man, at that time, hated the Chinese who would come in and work for much less money. The Chinese were taking the much needed jobs of the whites.

The first character we meet is Joe. Joe has a heart full of love and adventure. When Joe finds a Chinese woman dying and her new baby laying next to her, he does what anyone with a heart would do ... he takes the baby home.

The story takes us through the life of Joe, Ma, Pa, Sam, and little Charity the Chinese baby. It is a time when even so much as being friends with a Chinese person could cost you your life. This is a very engaging story set in a time and place that was new to me. I read each page with great interest and learned of a hatred I had never before heard of.

Without giving anything away, I was very pleased with the outcome of the lives of this family. Their struggles were real, as was their love for each other. I highly recommend this story that I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of from The Niche Reader. It was well written and I look forward to reading other stories by Liz Harris.

Golden Tiger is a wonderfully written historical fiction novel. This novel hit my heart in a million different ways. Each character has a redemption arc of their own, and you see so much development. The characters all have histories and cultures that are touched on respectfully and with depth. The way the romantic relationships are handled are done with grace, culture respect, and beautifully written emotion. It was easy to see how this was going to end up but that isn't always a bad thing. In the case of this novel, it was wonderful to see how it played out.

I loved the unusual point of view of this story. I've never read a story from this era from the point of view of a Chinese character. I simply could not put this book down.

Charity is a Chinese girl, taken in as a baby by a family of white miners. Intelligent and hardworking, she doesn't fit in with the whites or Chinese in Carter Town, Wyoming. Joe, the boy who found her and took her to his family is her only real friend.

But not everyone in the family believes Charity should have a place in their home, no matter how much she does for the only family she knows. They also face shunning and pressure from the other miners, who blame the Chinese for the falling wages they take home.

At Joe's behest, she slowly begins to make a friend in the Chinese community and learns the culture of her race. Some still don't accept her into the Chinese community, others develop feelings she can't reciprocate and seek to punish her for her rejection.

Charity fears she may have to flee the only family, the only place she's ever known to start over in a new town. How will she find a place between two worlds where she can fit in?

I was not familiar with the mining industry nor the hardships a mining family faced. It was a very grueling life. This novel brought to life the beliefs and traditions of the Chinese people who settled in these small mining towns and the prejudices that both communities had for each other's cultures. I enjoyed the evolving relationship, love and respect that both older brother and younger sister had for each other.

For romance fans, this book will appeal to you. The premise, a Chinese girl raised by a white family in a racist town in Wyoming, has all the ups and downs that you’d expect, including an unrequited love between the main character, Charity, and the second son in the family, Joe. Charity straddles two worlds, living with an American family, but shunned by most white families due to her looks, and never really accepted as a traditional Chinese girl. The resentment of the mine workers in the town to the Chinese workers who were happy to do the same work for less pay was the main premise of the book. I would have liked to read more about how the immigrants came to that town in Wyoming, and more about what was going on in the country at that time. I really didn’t learn much, which is what usually happens when I read historical fiction.

I was really really looking forward to reading this book. I love historical fiction, and you don’t really see a lot of Asian representation in this genre - especially in American historical fiction. But honestly I think it was poorly done. The characters were two-dimensional and shallow. The main family dynamic was not very believable, and the Chinese characters were flat and stereotypical. I loved the premise, but I don’t think it was very well executed.

It is hard to imagine two more different societies than the rugged pioneers in the vast spaces of Wyoming and the products of China's rigid and formal culture. I found this portrayal of the past struggles between beliefs illuminating on the the conflicts of today.
The research is impressive. I learned a lot about Chinese etiquette, the working of coalmines, the driving of cattle and the way the law can be a perfect ass.
Written in flawless English with a neat way of creating the landscape by a quick reference to an unfamiliar flower or bird.

I wasn't sure I'd enjoy this as much as the Colonials series but I was wrong. This was just as great with excellent historical back drop and twists and turns. Just when I thought I could predict what happened next, Liz introduced an unexpected twist. As always the book is written so beautifully and the author's ability to describe scenery is just amazing. I felt I was there and easily imagined the streets, houses, hills and mountains. Brilliant.
