Tessa Graves's to-do list: Find her lost memories, kill the Patron, and restore honor to the House of Graves, if such a thing is even possible...
The Cadwel incident did not go unnoticed, and as a result the Graves gals and Curtis Nash may be up a creek without a paddle. Old clientele are seeking to insure they don’t end up like the Cadwels by removing Graves, Graves, and Graves from the picture, permanently. And the only way to keep the Hidden government off their case is by solving one for the Tetrarch. (Never mind that it’s an unsolvable cold case from before Tessa could tie her own shoes.) If that wasn’t bad enough, Tessa is discovering that her mind is far less her own than she realized and that the most dangerous threat to her family may be her... Hi, I'm M.M. Crumley Your Author Extraordinaire (Also Known as M.M. Boulder)

As M.M. Crumley I write Urban Fantasy books full of supernatural action, nail-biting-mystery and; laugh-out-loud humor. Why? Because stories, myths, and legends have always been a huge part of my life... As a child, I liked nothing better than to lose myself in a world where magic and heroes were part of the fabric of existence.

As my pen name M.M. Boulder I write psychological thrillers and murder mysteries that bring the darker impulses we may not feel completely comfortable with into the light. My stories are full of lies and deaths, but there is always justice. A type of justice that's not afraid to get its hands dirty. I write morally ambiguous characters who are pushed to their limits and take matters into their own hands. In my world getting away with murder has never been so much fun!

No matter what I write every one of my characters are real to me. They exist. They are three-dimensional beings who demand that their stories be told. If I were to turn away from them, they would haunt me; and so I don't. Instead I chase after them and write down everything they say!

I have several series to help you scratch your itch for adventure:

THE HOUSE OF GRAVES Series

THE IMMORTAL DOC HOLLIDAY Series

THE LEGEND OF ANDREW RUFUS Series

I was unexpectedly impressed with this series. We are told that Tessa, the youngest Graves, is our protagonist; during the first couple of books, I was unconvinced. I suppose this was written to allow for a "growth arc" which screams "coming of age" (yuck) to me....but it wasn't. Rather than the young, strong (theoretically) heroine with a couple of older relative sidekicks/comic relief/moral support characters, what we have here is really a wonderful ensemble cast. Every one adds equally to the story. It is really well-done. At a 5-book story arc, it was just long enough to really come to care about the characters, but not so long as to feel artificially dragged out. I cared enough about the MC that I did not really want to read the last book because it was clear something awful was coming, and I was not going to like it. Thank heavens the author believes in happy endings.

I'm quite thoroughly enjoying the story. It's not a storyline that's rehashed, but brand new and full of surprises. The author does a good job of keeping the story moving along and not dragging the plot out.

I really loved the first installment of this series and had high hopes for this book. I really can't say I didn't like Over the River, but the conclusion ruined it for me. That's because there is no conclusion!
The book did a good job of moving the story along and developed the characters very nicely. Everything seemed to be flowing so well, then the book just stopped. I. Hate. That!
This is the reason that I've almost given up on reading any series whatsoever! I cringe at starting any series at all any more. I've stopped reading a lot of series after the first book and felt my time spent reading was totally wasted for just this reason. I trusted M. M. Crumley, and this book is really threatening to shatter that fragile trust!
I'll be back for the next Graves book, but I hate to say that I'm hoping it's the last one.

I'm loving these books. Each one so far has its own case, but there is an ongoing storyline for Tessa and the Patron. You could read one book and not the others, I think, but some of the carry through information won't make much sense. Definitely read the first one if you haven't before reading this one. There is just enough mystery surrounding Doc Holiday that I'll probably read the series on him too. So glad I stumbled across this author's books.

I loved the way supernatural beings were within a hidden city. This book has a lot of twists and turns that will make you wonder what is next.
  • Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2025
Being controlled by anyone is awful. Tessa is a character by design and that is what tortures her. This series has been a great study of good vs evil.

Who is the unknown monster that lurks in the shadows, the Patron that seems to know and own her? This book has deepened the mystery for me. I can't wait for number three to come out and tell me who they are. It is wonderful watching the budding romance blossum between two of our characters. I love the chill of Curtis and the calm and wisdom he brings. Plus Ollie, well, she just kicks ass! Thank you Megan, again, for a fully enthralling and entertaining read.

Book 2 in this series is a great follow-on. Full of humour, frustration, and intrigue. What a trio the Graves are. One's a detective, one's a fighter, and the other writes saucy novels. Together, they are trying to right a wrong. What a combination! MM Crumley has a great imagination, and I can happily lose myself in her books. I'm quite prepared for a very late night as once I start reading, the book isn't going to be put down till it's finished
    I eagerly await book 3!
