When Carruthers ''Danni'' McAllister receives an antique pouch as a birthday gift from her grandfather, her first reaction is disappointment. ''Don't assume that something is empty just because there's nothing there,'' her grandfather warns. Danni learns that for nearly two hundred years, the mysterious pouch with its astonishing hidden secrets has been handed down from generation to generation, and each new owner has had to discover how to access the power it holds, or suffer the penalty of using the pouch unwisely.
While Danni struggles to understand the power of the pouch, her father's discovery of a rhodium mine makes her family the target of a deadly extortionist plot, and the strange pouch is Danni's only hope of saving her family.
In the spirit of The Alliance, The Freedom Factor, and Leverage Point, author Gerald N. Lund blends gripping, fast-paced suspense with a timeless message for readers of all ages.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2015At first I had given 4 stars as I felt the story to be a little unrealistic. Then it dawned on me that it is just a story. To me, it was unusual for Mr. Lund to have a little fantasy in his writings like this story. Then I read the prologue and understood. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with this book and it's characters.
I liked the descriptions of the locations and the interaction between family and friends. The touches of love between a girl and boy.
I did not like the bad guys but this is in a good way as the author portrayed them as they should be....... villains.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2013I have been a fan of Gerald Lund since The Work and The Glory series, so I was excited to read his latest novel & I wasn't disappointed! Unlike several of his other novels, this one is not based on any historical events or people. It is purely fictional & really fun & something totally a surprise to me, one of the characters ( a sister to one of the main characters) is a girl named Raye! That is such a surprise, because most female "Rays" are spelled Rae. I have never met another girl/woman that spelled it the same as I do (added bonus). I recommend this fun book. Especially for teenagers, but being a grandmother, didn't get in my way of really enjoying The Guardian. Enjoy, it's a true page turner!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2013If your looking for adventure, suspense and a fun read this is it. In a world filed with corruption and disheartening news thrown at us every day it's refreshing to read a book about an everyday family who have been given some extraordinary blessings/trials to overcome. The heroine has a great many lessons to learn but is wise enough, with a few trip up's along the way, to learn what she needs to in order to help her family. I love le guardian in this tale. We each have our own le guardian in our own lives, we only have to learn to recognize it, and follow it. You can call it intuition, a sixth sense what ever you chose. I call mine the holy ghost. Thank you for a great read and some needed inspiration. Debie Egley
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2013This was a great book, a little on the fantastic side in a few places, but a great story that I tried to get my kids to let me read to them. It is more reminiscent of Gerald's work from the past (The Alliance and Freedom Factor), than his more recent historical novels. A great read for teenagers and families without delving into some of the odd fantasy genre that seems to surround books for that age group. I loved it and hope he continues to write similar novels. As he says in the epilogue, the greatest books are performed by our parents, siblings and grandparents. We need this kind of literature to bring our familyies close and enjoy a fun tale that has positive values.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2018It started out to be one thing, but turned into something completely different. It was still worth reading? I would recommend this to a younger reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2016I love Gerald Lund's style of writing. The Guardian was wonderful! I did not want to put it down. It is a story told by a 13 year old girl as she progresses thru to age 16. The pouch which she was given on her 13th birthday taught her to listen within herself as she grew to adult hood. I am a senior citizen, I enjoyed it.
