Horsing Around with Murder: Hilarious & Heartwarming Romantic Cozy Mystery with Animals and Senior Sleuths Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 50 ratings

Once she retired, Abby Foster thought her accounting days were behind her, but when she and her two sisters inherit a run-down dude ranch, she's suddenly thrown back into the world of business. And her sisters. And way too many horses, which, in her opinion, are the most terrifying beasts on the planet.

Facing financial ruin, the sisters come up with a plan to host a horse breeding symposium to boost their popularity and attract more guests. But when a cowboy dies under suspicious circumstances, Abby is convinced it was murder.

With no one else taking her suspicions seriously, Abby enlists the help of her sister and their hot barn manager to conduct a covert investigation. But with all the chaos and quirky guests at the ranch, it's hard to keep their snooping, oops, investigation under wraps. But when a kidnapping, not to mention drugs, deceit, and an uncooperative stallion, escalate the danger, Abby finds herself caught up in a late-life romance that only ups the ante.

Did I mention Abby has a horse phobia?

Horsing Around with Murder by Maureen Fisher is one of the funniest mystery stories I have read in a long time. With laugh-out-loud comedy, loads of hilarious action and some of the coolest characters ever written, this book really does have it all. The story grabbed me from the very first page and moved at a quick but steady pace all the way through. The characters are simply marvelous; very relatable, fun, quirky, and, more importantly, likable and real. With so many suspects, it was hard to figure out whodunnit and the story just keeps you guessing all the way through. A fabulous story, a fun adventure with a little bit of senior romance to sweeten the deal, and plenty of laughs along the way. Highly recommended read.

★★★★★ -- It was everything I had hoped for: laugh-out-loud, hilarious scenes, wild and fun characters, and the twisty, turning plot of a great mystery, and best of all I didn't guess "who done it".

★★★★★ -- Laugh out loud fun and mystery - Loved Maureen Fisher's new book "Horsing Around With Murder"! A wonderful comfy read for anyone who likes fun, romance and mystery. I had enjoyed the warmth and humour of Ms. Fisher's previous 3 books and as mysteries are my favorite genre, I was really looking forward to this book.

I have sisters myself and I loved the interaction between Abby and her sister Dodie. For me the author caught the nature of sisterly interaction, combative yet loving, able to end up with laughter and support. Loved Zeke as the hunky cowboy love interest. Their follies and adventures on a recently inherited ranch, made this a book I genuinely could not out down. I'd sure like to be a guest at the ranch again and hang out with these sisters.

I'm an author of funny & furry adventures & misadventures, guaranteed to tickle the funny bone, lift the spirits, & warm the heart! All my books contain characters you can relate to, an animal or two, and always romance of varying quantities and heat levels along with tons of humor. As Charlie Chaplin once said, “A day without humor is a day wasted.”

Transplanted from Scotland to Canada at the tender age of seven, I'm a voracious reader, community volunteer, bridge player, yoga enthusiast, seeker of personal and spiritual growth, pickleball enthusiast, and infrequent but avid gourmet cook. As an escapee from the I.T. arena, I love to hike, bike, and travel, mostly with my husband and, occasionally, alone. I have swum with sharks in the Galapagos, walked with Bushmen in the Serengeti, sampled lamb criadillas (don’t ask!!!) in Iguazu Falls, snorkeled on the Great Barrier Reef, ridden an elephant in Thailand, watched the sun rise over Machu Picchu, and bounced from Johannesburg to Cape Town on a bus called ‘Marula’.

Some quotes:

“You are a great writer, scratch that you are phenomenal. The way you have projected each and every character is remarkable. Vivid description make you visualize the book like a movie. For me it’s a must read. And yes, last but not the least, I will surely buy your other books after I finish my exams.”

"Maureen combines action, adventure, romance, mystery, and an often LOL sense of humor in her page-turning novels. They are the perfect additions to your electronic libraries, like da rum and da coconut in your piña coladas."

So I must admit I read these books in the wrong order! I read #2 book first and it apparently was A-OK to do that. I didn't have any problems at all. In fact I had loved that one so much I had to read this one too.

And wow. This one made me actually laugh out loud. I very rarely do that. But the scene with the prize horse was just so insane and funny I was laughing!

So once again we are on the dude ranch and this time Abby is the main character instead of Clara. There is another bunch of guests and another murder. Someone is found dead in the horse stall with the prized stallion. The local police - the Mounties - dismiss it as an accident but the ladies on the ranch are highly suspicious. They are determined to investigate it on their own and of course soon all sorts of hijinks start.

The twins in here are so naughty!! Love the excitement they bring to the story.

But what I really liked about this one was the horses. There really were no horses in book #2 I had read. Only goats and a llama. But there's A trail ride in here. And horses in the stall. Plus to make it even more interesting poor Abby is scared of horses. So she has to overcome that fear and actually get very close to the big creatures.

The horse action in here is passable I think. Although the scenes with the stallion are somewhat questionable? I have heard they can be very hard to control and I would think that in reality the ranch hands wouldn't let someone as green as Abby near the prized stallion, especially in that sort of situation. It would be too risky. But this IS a story. But I loved the scenes in here where the horses nuzzle her and show how very relaxed they are. That I know is indeed accurate. A relaxed horse does let things hang out. I've seen that myself with horses.

I really didn't try to guess who the killer was in here. I just enjoyed the story today.

I can also relate to Abby trying to ride for the first time and the horse not cooperating at all. In fact I am amazed that the book didn't say she felt in danger when the horse suddenly lowered his head to eat. That alone can threaten your balance. Or make you feel more threatened, especially to a new rider. I am guessing she didn't have that as she is no doubt using a western saddle while I am using a hunter-jumper saddle.

Lots of action. Crazy zany events. Lots of suspicious characters.

As a horse crazy girl from way back, I loved this book. I could just envision some of the scenes having had neighbors who owned and bred racing Quarter Horses. Readers will know exactly which scene I mean. Not to mention the riding scene involving water which, sigh, I've experienced on my own but without a handsome cowboy like Zeke nearby to rescue me. And, oh, the spitting llama and dwarf goats in the pool. Thankfully, I've never experienced that one but it's easy to visualize. In other words, author Maureen Fisher does a wonderful job creating fun, laugh out loud scenes and characters that, even at their most extreme, you will probably find yourself liking. Heck, even the murderers are rather sympathetic. I wish I knew Abby Foster, the main character, and her sister in real life, tho' my hunch is that they would exhaust me. The pace is fast, with not just humor but an about to erupt romance, and I'd like to book a room at the Grizzly Gulch Guest Ranch right now, thank you. A fun read that I highly recommend.

Maureen Fisher has written a high energy, fun romp. It spoke to me very deeply, as I lived a husband's dream of race horses and pony rides. Took me back to those years, only with murder and a complex cast of characters. With an occasional over-description and me wondering why in a life and death situation, a side trip would be considered. Great humor and even greater swear words. I am signing up for book 2.

Horsing Around with Murder by Maureen Fisher is a perfect example of a cozy! It’s got it all. Characters that are so life-like you’d like them for your own friends, the hilarious wry and naughty humor of people comfortable in their own skin that make you laugh out loud, and a story so well crafted it will keep you guessing as to who dun it!

Thanks to the heroine Abby Foster, her sister Dodie, and a cast of eccentric characters including Chef Armand whose food sounds to die for, and of course, one hot guy called Zeke, the story just zings along at a wicked pace. The Grizzly Gulch Guest Ranch sounds like a perfect place to stay if you wish your vacation to be exciting and memorable. Five stars all around!

I look forward with pleasure to the next installment from this writer that’s new to me. So glad I took the chance and downloaded her book. 😊

The first book I've read from this author, but will definitely read more. The story is laced with humor, murder, and mystery. I enjoyed this book and the characters. The story takes place on a ranch in Canada, where a horse symposium takes place. A horse trainer is murdered, but appears accidental. Several of the attendees have a reason to kill the trainer who make good suspects. A fun and light-hearted read. I plan on reading more by this author.

This is the first book I've read by this author and it was a delight. The suspense and laugh out loud moments keeps the reader riveted to the page. The author masterfully blends humor and mystery to create an extremely fun read. The two things I took away from the book are: Don't mess with senior citizens and take a pass if you're ever offered a Super-Deluxe Fat Buster Thigh 'n' Butt Toner.

Being a romance mystery, this isn’t the sort of book that I’d normally read. I’m glad I did. It has believable characters of a similar (almost) age to me. The story is full of amusing situations. Maureen Fisher presents the story in an easy to read and an enjoyable way. She has discovered a unique writing voice which helps the reader join in with the story. It starts off with a murder and then convinces you that everyone is guilty of either the murder or the several sabotage attempts that follow. I am now a Maureen Fisher fan.

I have to admit that I almost stopped reading after the first chapter. I found that the senior ladies sexual desires were being pushed a little too hard. I got a slightly fed up with hearing about Abby's girlie bits and their reactions. However, having read the delicious description of sister Dodie, I had to continue. And how glad I am that I did. I loved the plot, really got into the humour. The book is worth reading for many reasons, the main one being the humerous situations. Abby's attempt at semen collection from a big stallion is, in itself alone, worth the read.

It is a joy to read a book where the stars are 60+ women! As someone who is beyond the age of the usual 20 to 35 year old heroine I found sisters Abby, Dodie and Clara to be refreshing main characters that were well fleshed out and very believable women who were comfortable in their own skin, while hot barn manager, Zeke and the Ottawa foothills add loads of colour to this tale.

The plot concerns a murder that takes place at the beginning of a week-long horse breeding symposium. With the Mounties dismissing the death as accidental the sisters take on the role of evidence gatherers. The plots rolls along at a swift pace and there are many adventures before this murder mystery resolves.

Maureen Fisher has created a warm and funny novel that fairly zips along and only resolves when you reach the point where you believe everyone done it! I look forward to the next in this series!

I haven't laughed this hard in ages! Some of the situations the characters found themselves in were just too funny. Spewing sparkling water out your nose, and collecting horse semen were two of the more memorable.

Humans and animals alike, the characters are well-rounded and believable. I mean, would you run a dude ranch if you were petrified of horses? Abby does. Okay, inherited it from an uncle, but still...

I'm looking forward to the next senior sleuth mystery from Maureen.

Laughter truly is the best medicine.
