Before Hadley Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 363 ratings

Hadley can tell the minute she lays eyes on Caynan, the cocky new guy at school, that he's someone to avoid. He may have looks, charm, and the attention of every other girl in town, but he's also got heartbreak written all over his pretty face.

But what Hadley doesn’t know—what no one knows—is that with Caynan, things aren't at all what they seem. His secrets have secrets and everything out of his mouth straddles the line between truth and fiction. Caynan knows better than to get involved with anyone, especially with his time limited in the new town, but he just can't seem to get Hadley out of his mind. She's the one girl who doesn't want him. The one girl who's turned off by his charm. The one girl who challenges him like no other.

And, though she couldn't possibly know the truth about him, she seems to be the one girl who really sees him. Too bad for Caynan, secrets never remain secrets for long. And this one has the power to destroy more than just his life.

★★★★★ 5-Second Chance Romance ★★★★★
It's been three years since he was arrested, three long years since after she turned him in. Now that he's out of prison, his only mission is to win her back, win back the one that got away. No matter what it takes...? Feeling betrayed and lied to, will the heroine be able to move past the hurt caused by him? She knows deep down that there is a connection between them. That somehow they'll both be able to move forward with or without each other? Hadley gave up the most important thing in her life to the one person she thought she loved may be the biggest mistake she has ever made. A bad British boy... who wouldn't fall for that? Well, she tries to keep him at arm’s length to protect her heart but he had other ideas. Caynan has been misfortune when it comes to his childhood upbringing. He lost his mother at a young age and had made a promised on her deathbed to never leave his father's side. It's what made him stick around and did all the dirty work his father ask him to do. How long can the charade go on until he's caught? When the truth comes out will both individuals be strong enough to hold on to love they think they feel for each other or will they end up having that closure after all and move on with their lives and go their separate ways? Having the opportunity of reading in advance of Before Hadley was released was a great experience. I was given a chance to play with the author’s characters, suggested to make the story more twisted. It was something I'll never forget. I enjoyed working with Jen and I hoped you'll enjoy her writing as well as I did. It's a love story that could've been easy to live with if it had been under different circumstances. Before Hadley by J Nathan is a story that will stick with you for a while even after reading the book. REVIEW IS ALSO ON FOUR CHICKS FLIPPING PAGES [...]

As the headline suggest, I accidentally one-clicked this book. I was reading the blurb on Amazon mobile when my phone slowed down and instead of scrolling down, I one-clicked it instead. Immediately, I tried to cancel it but my phone wasn't having it. It is not responding anymore.

Grudgingly, I read it to get my money's worth and I was in for a big surprise. I liked it - no, I loved it. True to its title, it tells the story of boy before Hadley (heroine) and a few chapters after Hadley. The plot is not that overwhelming but the somehow I liked it. It is funny and cheesy which is fine with me as they are high school students. What I like is the climax part, the big reveal. Throughout the story, I'm racking my brains on how it will be revealed.

All in all, I loved it.

This was a really great book. Hadley Ryan is a senior in high school and ready to finish school to go off to Georgia State to study Art. She's from a small town in Georgia and has a Detective father and a mother that goes around to Fundraisers. A new guy, Caynan who has a British accent and plays baseball exceptionally well. All the girls in town just fall all over him but Hadley does her best to stay away from him.

Hadley is a extremely talented artist. She loves her family but they are busy with other things. She's usually hanging out with her best friend and her best friend's boyfriend. She's attracted to Caynan but she knows it's best to stay away because he would just lead to heartache. She does her best to stay away from him but he works hard and pushes past her boundaries. She sees what a wonderful and caring man he can be.

Caynan is 18 years old but for years he's lived lies and moved all over the place. His father and the memory of his mother's dying wish for them to stay together. His father became a criminal and dragged him into that life and now he does his bidding. He loves baseball but he knows he doesn't have a choice in making that a career. He loves that Hadley doesn't fall all over him like all the other girls. He takes an interest with Hadley and makes sure she knows he cares and does so many wonderful things for her.

    Definitely worth reading.

The first half of Hadley & Caynan's story was interesting to say the least, the hidden lies were going to be tough to come back from! How could he redeem himself? Would he ever? Can true love over come? You'll have to read it to find out. Just know that the second half is so worth it. Thank you J.Nathan for another fantastic story.

    3.5 stars.

Before Hadley was a refreshingly original story centered on two very different people from two very different worlds who collide together like lightening!

One of the greatest things about this novel was Hadley. I loved her character. Raised by a cop as a father she was tough but surprisingly not emotionally withdrawn. Her realistic personality drew me into this story. She was kick-ass with a sarcastic mouth but so very charming and witty. Smart, creative and kind. Her character was very well developed. I loved how she was rough around the edges but vulnerable at the same time.

I enjoyed reading the progress of Hadley and Caynan's love. There was something so sweet and endearing about it. To see this hardened criminal fall for a tough cookie like Hadley was cute. Even though as the reader you know Caynan's intentions you can't help but fall for him. You can't help but feel so sad for the life he was forced to live. Dare I say it when their relationship came to a screeching halt I felt more emotion for him and more anger at Hadley for turning on him.

The novel splits to 3 years after their blowup and that's where the 3.5 star rating comes in for me. The second part seemed forced and glossed over. Hadley's character became very indecisive which was annoying. Her treatment of Connor pissed me off to no end. Not one of Hadley's emotions or actions in part two were compensated. Her character seemed to jump from one emotion or action to the next without any explanation or thought behind them. It made the progress of story confusing. At one point I didn't even think this novel had a HEA. At the second to last chapter of the book Hadley is confused as ever when it comes to her feelings for Connor. As the reader you think she'll never be able to forgive him for hurting her and then BAM on literally the next page she's waiting for him so she can "try" to forgive him and have sex with him. WTF !!! It's like you've missed something important because that turn of events came from no where. I felt like the potential, the story, the characters, the emotion, the realistic aspect of it was there for the author to take and turn into a 5 star rating and yet it fell so flat. Like she just didn't care to put in the extra time or effort to fully complete the rest of the novel. Even the epilogue was weak. It didn't leave me with a happy feeling because the characters found their HEA, it just left me even more confused with no insight into nothing. I would have loved to know how the couple over came their obstacles ... How Hadley found it in herself to eventually forgive Connor, how Connor overcame his criminal past. What about how Connor's and Vik's relationship continued because clearly she became an important person to him. But nope, nothing. The author gives you absolutely nothing to end this story but a filed attempt of resolution.

I read Since Drew and didn't really like it. I read the first chapter and the last then and breezed through the rest. The characters and the storyline itself felt pointless with no character depth or development. Even with that thought in mind I still purchased Before Alex and shockingly I actually enjoyed it. I loved both Hayden and Alex. It seems with this author she is either a hit or miss. Before Hadley was right in between. It started out good by declined the closer it got to the end. When it comes to this author I'm not sure if I'll read anything else.

I really enjoyed this book. Hadley is a normal high school student; a lovely, talented artist planning to going to college in the fall. Caynan is a British transer student, super hot and a great baseball player. Hadley labels him a player and tries to steer clear. However, he likes how feisty she is and starts the chase. He wears her down and a sweet relationship begins. It's obvious that even though they are young, what they have is special. However, Caynan has a dark secret and when it's exposed, their world comes crashing down. His love for her never dies, but she spends years hating him. She's lost trust and the ability to connect with others. When their lives meet up again, she has to decide if she can forgive him, if she can trust and love him again. Will Caynan and Hadley get another chance? You can't help but root for them and their happy ending.

Both characters with such loveable personalities, together they make an explosion of love, hate, remorse, forgiveness combination of brilliantly told events. I was fascinated by the charm and innocence as teenage lovers but it stepped up a game in the second part. I was on edge and wanted so badly to get to the end without it actually ending! Lol
I am now a big fan and will read J Nathan's other titles.

    So good!!

A hero who is bad and does bad things but is also good with a good heart. Loved it!

This was different to what I've read before and it spans over a few years towards the last half of the book ( if you don't like time jumps and the heroine does have other relationships )

It has a very big message about forgiveness and making amends and doing the right thing. Our hero was in a bad position due to his father and did a lot of crappy things but it wasn't hard to see he was a good person underneath and oh, how he showed it. Gah, I loved him and how he tried to make things right.

    It's a book I'd definitely re-read.
