Harriet Tubman - A Biography in Rhyme: The perfect snuggle time read so little readers everywhere can dream big! (A Wonderful World Book Series) Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 54 ratings

Many years ago, Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross,
And she ran the Underground Railroad like a Total Boss!

This biography of Harriet Tubman relates the story of an extraordinarily brave woman. Adversity could have been Harriet's middle name because she had every sling and arrow of outrageous fortune pointed against her. Born into slavery, she suffered a grievous head injury early on which left her suffering with terrible headaches and epilepsy for the rest of her life. Yet, she ran rescue operations to free people from slavery for over eight years, carrying a revolver for protection, sometimes camouflaging herself using loudly squawking chickens, disguising herself with large bonnets, and hiding behind large newspapers, pretending to read them. Harriet Tubman worked in the worst possible weathers when patrols were less likely to be out and about. She also worked as a nurse and spy during the Civil War, actively campaigned for Women's Suffrage, and continued to help newly freed people assimilate into society by providing for them despite her limited means.

Her story is definitely one worth telling to children, not only because of her amazing bravery, but also because of her wonderful kindness and indomitable spirit which led her to risk everything to help everyone she could.

"What a wonderful story to share with little ones. There are so many fictional books that make up brave characters but this is powerful to show kids that throughout history bravery can come from the least likely people. We enjoyed this true life story of a young girl who escaped slavery and spent the rest of her life saving others." - Amazon Customer

Author, illustrator, and dentist, Ramya Julian finished her first novel at the age of ten and she avers it was very well received, though it was read only by her brother. She has all the hobbies of a maiden Victorian aunt – reading, writing, painting, crocheting, knitting and sewing, and the temperament of one. When she’s not guilt-tripping her two daughters into good behaviour, she can be found devouring books, crafting poems and puns, and chuckling at her own witticisms. She grew up in India and now lives with her husband and their two daughters in London.

She has experienced so much joy through the enchanting artistry of many authors and creators, that she aspires to share at least some of it through her writing.

Wonderful rhyming verse and beautiful illustrations, just like the other books in the series. I would have liked some more information about Harriet Tubman though. Having said that, the book is light enough for young kids to enjoy and learn about Harriet, and the activities at the end of the book are a plus!
