- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2022It's odd for a sequel to be better than the original (Darkening Sturgeons), but that might be the case here. I loved the creepiness of the original but this new installment is more human and touching but still leaves you guessing until the end. I highly recommend reading both books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting - an apt title!
This tale concerns the after effects of the terrible tragedy in Sturgeons 10 years. It would probably be useful to have read Darkening Sturgeons first but if you haven't you will certainly want to revisit it after.
Jimmy is a young man whose life has been ruined by the events in Sturgeons, even though he and his mother and father escaped the town soon after his older brother disappeared in mysterious circumstances but his parents can't let go of the past and end up destroying themselves. His father blames the lawman for everything - even though he was landed with the responsibility very shortly before the disaster occurred. I can't see any reason why you would blame Straker (unless I have missed something) but I haven't been affected by such a tragedy. There are some great characters in this story worthy of Capote himself like Ms. Minch and Eddie. Eddie is a perfect heartthrob and doesn't deserve the outcome of this story. All in all this story is an American tragedy that makes you think.

5.0 out of 5 stars When you revisit past traumas, be careful when you reopen old wounds…
The original book was written 10 years ago with lots of enthusiasm and was quite entertaining. With this sequel (that can be read on its own), you can tell that the author has reached a maturity that allows a much more controlled writing style telling a story of rekindled romance, heartbreak, and a dangerous search for truth. A pleasure to read…
