Have Mercy Kindle Edition
My whole world changed with one roadside bomb and an honorable discharge. Not even the city I used to love can ease the restlessness inside me. I don’t expect visiting my cousin Sienna’s farm to do the trick either, but the change of scenery can’t hurt. Wyoming isn’t what I expected—from the mischievous pig following me around, to the rescue horse I’ve become strangely fascinated with. And then there’s Kerry, the handsome, brooding cowboy, who somehow calms the storm inside me—and just happens to be Sienna’s ex-husband.
Kerry Carmichael
I’ve had a rough go of it since I came out—disappointing my family, the divorce, and the blow of my daughter’s illness. Things are settling down now, my kiddo is healthy, and Sienna and I are finally on solid ground. Not everyone accepts me, but I’ve owned my truth, even if I spend my life solo. Only, now that Julian’s here, I’m not so lonesome anymore. He’s a kindred spirit. First as someone to talk to, then as…more. The first time I hold him through one of his nightmares, I feel a rightness I never expected to find.
We know this’ll end with the summer, but with every stolen kiss against the stable walls, with every heated or tender moment, I fall deeper. The reality is, I can’t risk my family or the business by going public with him. I know this can never last and that Julian doesn’t belong here. So why does it feel like he already does?

So, another read by an author I haven't read before. Which is a terrible shame, because I have quite a few books written by Christina Lee on my TBR, and somehow never got around to pick one and just read it. There were always other books in the way, I suppose.
Anyway, I was really taken by this one. The writing style, the characters, the slow burn, which seemed to be at pace with the healing process of both Julian and Ainsley. It gave the story an extra emotional touch, as well as a touch of reality. Both Julian and Kerry needed time to process what exactly it was they were feeling, they needed time to learn about the changes inside themselves and to me that's what gave this story it's emotional load.
Because emotional it was, even if it was quite predictable, but that's with the majority of these romances, isn't it? As a reader I even appreciate the predictable, because it makes a story less angsty if you already sense how it's going to go and sometimes that's exactly what I need.
As said, this is quite a slow paced story. Due to his PTSD Julian thinks a change of scenery might do him good. Living in New York City, with all it's noises and people, hasn't made it easy on him to adjust to his life after his honorable discharge. He misses structure and guidance and he thinks he might find something of that on his cousins farm in Wyoming. It won't do him harm anyway.
While staying on the farm, some unexpected things happen to him: he falls in love with the scenery, with life on the farm, with it's animals and with it's people, specially Kerry, his cousin's ex-husband, who recently came out as gay and who has a tough time being accepted by his family and his surroundings. There's a connection between the two men and it grows into a lot more.
Then there's also Mercy, a rescued horse, and though he can't put into words what it is exactly, there's something about that horse that draws Julian to him. He was afraid of horses for as long as he can remember, but the connection he feels with Mercy is enough to make him try to build a bond between them. Maybe they can heal each other, something he never ever thought possible before coming to Wyoming.
Things between Julian and Kerry get intense; there's friendship, there's sexual attraction, and in the end there's a lot more, but they're both afraid to say it out loud, because they agreed for it to be just for the summer. Kerry is afraid of what Sienna and his family will say if they found out he has fallen in love with Julian, whom he considers family. Not by blood, but still...And Julian has to go back to New York for his sister's wedding, and maybe for the life he knew, but never felt comfortable in.
When it finally happens, the steam in this book is quite hot! I loved seeing Kerry and Julian finally getting together. There had been so much heavy moments and intense electricity between them, it was a fine moment when they finally couldn't resist anymore and acted upon their mutual attraction. They had chemistry!
I loved both characters, and I loved the secondary characters as well. The feeling of family, of that it means to have them, the sacrifices you are willing to make and where the ability to do so, ends. When you discover you deserve to be happy too, no matter what. It's your life to live and you only have one chance to live it.
All in all, this is a book I would highly recommend. It's a slow-burn romance with a lot of tender, sweet moments that give you all the warm feelings.

Become friends and more on their journey of healing and finding life after. This was such a great story that I stayed up all night reading it. I loved being able to witness this. Hurt comfort from both sides. The writing was great, the smexy was hawt and the side characters were good. I know it’s not how it works not all characters are gay, but if another book was to be written in this universe I would move to hear about hunter and z.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHave mercy was a lovely romance but at times it made me so mad. The main characters Kerry and Julian are both men dealing with damage. Julian has serious PTSD from dealing with tours of duty in the army. A year after discharge and still, at loose ends, he accepts an invitation to go to his cousin's ranch in Wyoming to help with a building project. He's lived in New York City all his life but visited Wyoming several times as a child.
Kerry is a man who did the right things for the wrong reasons. He bowed to his family's demand that their ranch is the center of his life. Although he knew in high school that he was most probably gay, he hid himself because he did not want to disappoint his family. He married his high school sweetheart and they had one child Ainsley. When Kerry's wife Sienna found out he was gay, it was not a smooth, happy coming out. It was followed immediately by his family shutting him out. And then his daughter was diagnosed with leukemia. Through all of this and continuing throughout the story, he has carried such a burden of guilt. That burden affects him just as much as Julian's PTSD affects him.
I enjoyed the characters. I enjoyed the setting. The story was lovely. It was a gentle reaching of two men for each other and recognizing in each other the damage. What I did not like and what made me so mad was the pressure that was put on Kerry that even though he came out he still needed to keep quiet. He still needed to not date anybody. He still needed to make his family's ranch and now his and Sienna's farm the center of everything. The pressure on him to carry the burden of guilt and anger from everybody else. I just wanted to go slap his family upside the head.
Nick Russo did a nice job narrating. He has distinct voices for Kerry and Julian. I was somewhat surprised that Julian did not have a definite accent coming from New York. Other than that the voices were all very good and easy to understand. I received a copy of Have Mercy from Audible because I won a contest on Facebook run by the author. I listened to the book and then wrote an honest review. I am going to look for more from Christina Lee since I really enjoyed this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseChristina's books are hidden gems. The cover is sparkly gorgeousness and inside is sweetness and love and warmth - maybe the analogy of a chocolate bar would have been better! But still... I absolutely adored this story. Just like with A Kaleidoscope of Butterflies, this story exceeded every one of my hopes when I cracked open the cover. It's a must read and one of my faves for 2020

5.0 out of 5 stars Have mercy indeed
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHoly cow. My goodness this was amazing.
For me this one checked pretty much all the boxes, it had the perfect amount of hot moments, it was beautiful, even cute at times, kinda heartbreaking but also satisfyingly happy.
I loved their personalities specially because they both had strong and weak points, like Julian was brave even bold at times but also fragile and sexy but in a shy way (if that even make any sense) and Kerry was all the dominance and strength that Julian needed but was also hurt, broken by guilt and scared of living the life he wanted. It's not a wild ride just kinda bumpy but it's totally worth the read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Slow burn beautiful romance
Format: KindleVerified Purchase“Have Mercy” is a heart-warming, beautifully written and lovely, slow burn, sweet romance, between a cowboy (Kerry Carmichael) and an injured combat veteran (Julian North).
Both have demons they are fighting.
Julian has PTSD following a roadside bomb and an honourable discharge from the army.
Kerry is living with the aftermath of coming out as gay and having everyone disappointed in him.
Julian’s mum encourages him to take a break from the big city NYC and head towards his cousin’s farm in the hope that the move will make him feel better. At the farm, he is reunited with his cousin Sienna, whom he has not seen in a long time, her ex-husband Kerry and their little girl, Ainsley, also suffering from PTSD after battling cancer at a young age.
The move to the farm calms Julian even though he still has nightmares. The connection between Julian and Kerry is a slow burn, safe and sweet affair.
Life at the farm is nothing short of a memorable and beautiful summer holiday. There is no downplaying the PTSD, but it is written beautifully, and you get to empathise with Julian and with Ainsley. Julian is given a project to keep him busy, he leans a lot about farm life, and all these helps calm his PTSD.
The cute pigs Phoebe and Hamlet just added so much warmth to the story, I could not help but smile all through. The Equine-Assisted Therapy was an eye opener for me and Julian’s connection with Mercy the horse was captivating.
Overall, this was just a joyful, low angst, easy-to-read, lovely book.
The narration by Nick J. Russo (one of my favourite narrators) was great as usual.
Thank you, Christina Lee.
