Hidden in Paris: A charming novel about friends, relationships and new beginnings Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 2,211 ratings

A socially awkward widow is forced to take boarders into her Paris home, in this smart, witty novel of love, loneliness, friendship, and metamorphosis.

Living in France among people she hardly understands, Annie has had trouble leaving the house since the death of her husband. And since home happens to be a small place nestled in the heart of Paris, why would she ever want to? But when unexpected events threaten her beloved home, Annie has no choice but to find lodgers—quickly.

After placing an ad, Annie attracts tenants with the kind of baggage she isn’t prepared for: a long-legged, cool-headed ex-model on the run from her abusive husband; a frail young woman harboring a possible death wish; a mysterious artist; and an infuriating blue-blooded Frenchman—and all soon threaten Annie’s way of life in ways she never anticipated.

But when Annie finds herself reluctantly but actively engaged in the lives of her tenants she discovers she might just free herself in the process . . .

After punishing myself with book after formulaic book of an urban/vampire/romance series, HIDDEN IN PARIS was so refreshing, and a thoroughly enjoyable read. The novel is character driven, which is a good thing because the multidimensional and true-to-life characters are the best part of the novel. I've known people like Annie, the neurotic, pushy and loveable main character, and maybe saw a little of myself in her as well. Okay, maybe more than a little. I'd be suspiciously jealous of a uber-beautiful super model with two tots in tow who ventured across the Atlantic to rent a room from me, too. The dialogue was realistic and has an excellent flow and tempo, and made me laugh out loud more than a couple times.

Another plus to the novel is the descriptive and lively setting. Paris itself almost seem like another character of sorts that impacts all the characters in the novel with its sights, smells, tastes and seasons. It reaffirmed my bucket list item to one day visit the City of Love (or is it Lights...or both?). I really enjoyed this novel, and will look for other books by Ms. Gantz in the future. No more vampire books, please.

I loved everything about this book including the beautiful cover, the substantial feel of the weight of the book in my hands, the wonderful characters. From page one I was hooked and was sad when I came to the end! The characters are WONDERFULLY real, you become so attached to them. When Annie and Lola were in Annie's kitchen I actually found myself getting up and making myself a cup of coffee to drink with them! Each of the three women have different stories, very different backgrounds yet the central part of their lives is the same, the true need and value of family and love. I don't know if there is a sequel to this book, I intend to look after finishing this review but if there is not, I would sure be happy to see one in the future! Highly recommend this book if you are looking for a feel good, happy, travel to Paris without ever leaving your chair kind of book. One of the best books I've read in a long time!

Writing is not an easy craft by any stretch and I have the utmost respect for all published authors. (And no, I'm not a frustrated unpublished author!). I liked this novel, it was good and a quick read. My wish is that the first third of it was condensed: felt slow to get into the "good stuff." A lot of time spent setting up the story & then too little of the heart of it. Simply felt unbalanced to me. Yet, who am I to judge?? Really liked most of the characters -- interesting & seemingly realistic. Kids were adorable. I just wanted a bit more Paris in it & a little less "agony aunt" stuff. Such a beautiful city.

Reading some of the reviews, I was mystified. Researching the critics, I found all but one liked very little they had purchased. Sounds more like home buyer's remorse addiction than an honest critique of "Hidden in Paris" (or anything else they purchased). The other is a young, self-proclaimed critic with a web site. No criticism on my part as everyone needs a niche. I just like to see who is critiquing.

Myself, I have no credentials, but loved the book. I bought it on my Kindle ... by accident, hitting the wrong title. I wish all my mistakes turned out this well.

The creativity, fluidity, humor and unique writing style make this a first-rate read. The characters are live and real, pulling few punches. You may not like this if you are dealing with some of the real character issues or have a history you are trying to forget. For myself, I found the "realness" of characters added a welcome balance to many other books I have read where the characters' problems lag with superficiality. This being said, I found most of the characters fun and intriguing.

This leaves me with a question: When is Corine Gantz publishing her next?

"Hidden in Paris" is a very good first novel.

"Hidden in Paris" begins by introducing the reader to three separate characters and their troubled lives. They come together when one of the characters, Annie who lives in Paris, advertises rooms to rent in her house in order to solve her financial problems and the other characters respond to the advertisement. Under the one roof their lives come together and inevitably their problems too. The story of how they develop strong relationships and enrich each others lives is an enjoyable read. As the story moves to its conclusion, the reader is taken on an exciting ride to discover what will finally happen to each of the characters;all of them having come so far within the pages of the novel. The ending is not neatly wound up for each character, to the author's credit, but the main character who has struggled from the first pages, finds the contentment she was seeking. I thoroughly enjoyed "Hidden in Paris" and for me the strengths of the work lie in its well developed and contrasting characters and the concluding chapters which with suspense and tension skilfully bring the crises of the story together. I also enjoyed the well drawn dialogue between characters. The setting of Paris enhances the story for us Francophiles and adds another enjoyable dimension. A most enjoyable read.

5 stars because i can find no fault with it The characters are believable and the descriptions of Paris take me back there. The story is so gripping to me because there no parts of it which caused me to think "Nah that would never have happened" There are no saints in here just real life flawed people Basic storyline is young widow with 3 boys left the States with her husband and set about being the perfect wife, cooking French food and lovingly restoring the worst house on one of the best streets in Paris Widowhood forces her to rethink her finances so she puts an ad in various newspapers in the states for tennants The ones she finds are inevitably runnind away from something and then there is her friend of a friend the almost starving artist in Paris who takes her final room That,s all i am giving away!

Hidden in Paris tells the story of how people and a house in Paris changes the lives of newcomers (strangers) to the house. The theme is reminiscent of Under the Tuscan Sun, but with more characters involved.
