Review

This book is a brilliant practical guide to understanding your friend's diagnosis and symptoms, the reality of treatments and therapies, and how to overcome the challenges of long-distance communication. More than that, it is a book about what friendship means.
-- Rachel Kelly, author of
Black Rainbow: How words healed me -- my journey through depression, and Walking on Sunshine: 52 Small Steps to Happiness, Ambassador for SANE and Rethink Mental Illness.

Friendship soothes the soul and provides hope for people with bipolar disorder and yet the illness creates unique challenges to the friendships we so desperately want and need. Marty and Fran specifically address these challenges in this bright, uplifting and brutally honest book. Filled with stories and practical tips, there is more laughter than sorrow as the reader learns to cultivate a loving, kind and caring friendship that transcends the illness and creates a lasting bond.
-- Julie A. Fast, author of
Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder, Take Charge of Bipolar Disorder, and Get it Done When You're Depressed.

Marty and Fran are best buds who have an unbelievable story of friendship, resiliency and what it means to have someone in your life who says 'I hear you and I am here for you.'
-- Cheryl Ramsay, Community Development Specialist, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Maine.

A deeply honest and detailed account of two people's journey as friends, which reminds us that mental illness doesn't change what friendship is all about: being there for those we love.
-- Bridget Woodhead, Director, Traincon. Certified Mental Health First Aid instructor.

Extraordinarily well-written and powerful. I know from my own personal experience with friends living with mental illness, that meaningful two-way relationships are a key factor in attaining life balance and recovery. This is a very important book and could be helpful to many people.
-- Anne Pringle, Member of Board of Trustees, Maine Mental Health Partners 2009-2015 (Chair 2010-2012); Past Chair, "It Takes a Community" initiative, Spring Harbor Hospital and Maine Mental Health Partners; Former Mayor of Portland, Maine.

There are many wonderful books focusing on mental illness from a first-person perspective, and from the perspective of family members, but so few that focus on friends. This book fills that void, addressing the complexities of maintaining a friendship when mental illness is involved. The authors speak openly and honestly about their friendship – the challenges, the successes, and what they’ve learned along the way. It’s clear that their friendship has been life-changing for both of them, and they share insights that can help to strengthen any friendship. I first became interested in this book in its early stages because I also had a close friend with mental illness who lived far away, and I struggled to find relevant resources or supports. My friendship was different in some ways, but in reading the book I was struck by how closely the experiences mirror each other. To me that speaks to the value of the book, that it goes beyond just the experiences of the authors, to a more universal truth. The symptoms of mental illness can make it hard to maintain friendships; the stigma and shame around mental illness make it even harder. This book shows us that it’s okay to admit it’s hard, and it’s okay to struggle, but that it’s so worth it in the end. This review was written in exchange for a free PDF copy of the book.

Fran Houston and Martin Baker have put together a very readable and very important book regarding their shared journey through the wildly unpredictable nether lands of a major mental illness/ Their very intimate communications during periods of illness exacerbations and high stakes challenges are both intriguing and informative regarding the resiliency of the human spirit and the deeper meaning that the term "supportive" can have. All professional and pre-professional care-givers and those who suffer with illness can learn much from this collaborative memoir, and medical schools, graduate schools, hospitals, and other institutions that educate practitioners in the fields of health care would be wise to include it on reading lists. I am already three years into my retirement from a 45 year practice as a licensed clinical psychologist, and I wish a book like "High Tide Low Tide" had been available many years ago. Ralph M. First, I must say that I appreciate the openness and honesty of the authors of this book. If you have a friend or family member who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and you know very little about it or what it is like to live with it, then this may be a good read. If you are a practitioner, someone who has already done a lot of research, or have had a close relationship with someone who has the disorder for a significant length of time, most of the non-specific information is likely to be redundant (the information outside of their personal stories).

The book's description claims offering "no-nonsense advice" and "practical tips", which I found to be distinctly lacking. It is definitely a memoir, and a decently written one, but practical advice is very limited. Possibly the most tangibly useful piece of information is found in the appendix, where they include a redacted copy of Fran's wellness plan. Unfortunately, I feel that every practical aspect of what was shared could have been shared in much fewer words but with much more detail, instead of the superfluous speech that was used. There was a heavy focus on specific, intense instances that occurred due to Fran's disorder, without much discussion of the more day-to-day experiences.

I don't in any way mean to disparage their experiences or the stories they shared. It is clear in the words they have chosen that they have a very close friendship and Marty has helped Fran in some very, very significant ways. Unfortunately, because the book is not described as a memoir, I was expecting something from it that simply wasn't there. With a re-branding as a memoir, I would give the book 4 stars.

This book is about how to support a friend with bipolar but many of its techniques can be applied to other mental illnesses as well. From my own personal experiences, I can tell you this information is invaluable and on point. It not only talks about supporting a loved one but also gives insight into ways one with bipolar might be able to manage their illness. Although everyone responds to treatments differently, there are a few treatments mentioned in this book that have helped many people with bipolar, including one of the authors Fran. I highly recommend this book to anyone whose life has been touched by bipolar whether you are the one diagnosed or someone who cares for a person that has been diagnosed with any mental illness not just bipolar.

I really like this book. For a mother of an adult son with schizoaffective bipolar, this book gives a lot of very practical suggestions. It also puts into words feelings that my son has not been able to convey. It will help me to see and understand his views and feelings. The chapter on suicide is especially well-written and all the added resources are wonderful. Thank you Martin and Fran for your candidness and hard work writing this “help manual “.

The US Surgeon General has identified loneliness as a salient public health problem for our time. Baker and Houston's book is a thoughtful account of the complexity of mental illness, its tangled biopsychosocial underpinnings, and the importance of a multi-modal approach to treatment. At its core, the book is testimony to the seminal role of relationship in addressing suffering and stigma. The authors set a high aspirational bar for the scope of the healing connection, while providing frank guidelines for monitoring this and setting achievable limits-- recognizing that all relationships, like the experience of mental illness itself, are sui generis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended read for those looking into the topic of Bipolar Disorder along with friendships in general.

When I first heard about this book it was in its early stages of being written. The topic and style of the book was definitely new to me (being that i normally only read fiction novels), foreign and scary to comprehend how a book could tackle such a mysterious and seldom discussed topic.
I work with the English author Martin Baker in IT and I vowed to keep abreast of this book and on its publication i jumped at the chance to buy a copy, both to support him and his co-author Fran, along with attempting to expand my own knowledge of Bipolar and depression.

To say it was a revelation reading the book is an understatement, the book is well written in a journal type of style. The book slowly introduces the authors, their relationships and developing friendships. Along the way discovering about the different illnesses (both Bipolar as a whole and its component parts depression and mania), how they impact friendships and relationships in their own words not just from the "ill" one but the "well" one’s perspective.

At times as i read the book it was hard hitting (real life stories) and thought provoking especially the chapter on Suicide and the stigma of its discussion in this modern day.
The information provided within the book definitely makes you think in a different way and gives you things you could try in your own life. Reframing (emails and other communications) and NVC (Non-Violent communication) being the two i took away as being very important not only in regards to Bipolar disorder but in general communication when anger or when down.

Would I recommend this book to anyone, YES!
If not for improving your knowledge about the topic being discussed but in reading a story about two different people meeting by chance and how it changed into a meaningful friendship which benefits both of them. Along with an insight into how to approach difficult situations with a different way of thinking.

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read that everyone can take something useful from.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 1, 2019
Towards the beginning of this book they discuss how no one should be put on a pedestal but honestly I think Marty should. I know he gets support too and they are friends, but his level of commitment to Fran is truly astounding and she is very lucky to have it. There is a lot of interest in this book and much of the depression side resonates with me very strongly, especially the suicide by proxy section which I had thought I was pretty much alone in some of the ways it manifests itself. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one. Although some of the book was a little too new-agey for me I think there is something useful in this book for everyone as well as being an interesting read in general. I wish Marty and Fran well for the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and presented, this book feels like and empathetic friend.

This is such a helpful book. I love the way it is written and presented. The dialogue between two friends, one learning how to help the other in the best way possible and the other learning to accept and trust the help. At the same time, the reader is learning from two friends who have been through the Highs and Lows of the mental illness which is Bipolar Disorder.
As a caregiver, I recognised myself in the book and the book felt like an empathetic friend! After all, when one is caring for another, we need encouragement and understanding too, it's all too easy to get compassion fatigue.
This book will help you realise that you are playing a very special part in someone else's life. It will refresh and reinforce that relationship and bring hope.

True story of an extraordinary friendship. If you ever wondered how to be a better friend read this, to quote Fran “caring friendship is the best medicine of all”. Fran and Martin are open and honest with each other, stick with each other and are mindful to both spend time together and apart. Fran has a diagnosis of bipolar, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, the friendship negotiates this and with a 3,000 mile distance between them to boot! The book also signposts to organisations and other resources which can help and, Fran shares with us her Personal Care Manual. This book about no holds barred friendship is easy to read, informative and really rather lovely.

This book is one part inspiration and one part revelation. I thought I knew what this book would be, but I was proved wrong in the best possible way. It does one thing that most books can neither claim nor manage, it makes you feel better about people, about humanity and about friendship. It's an incredible insight into two amazing people who found each by chance, but keep each other through mutual respect, honesty and integrity for what they've built. Fantastic.
