- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseClare Lydon has written another MUST-READ, FABULOUS sapphic romance that happens to take place in the world of Women’s football/soccer. The MC’s meet on their 1st day as members of the Salchester Rovers. Sloane is the new star player from America looking for a fresh start after leaving her cheating fiancé and unsupportive family behind. Ella is a former footballer that is starting her dream job as the performance and lifestyle coach. Football/soccer may be a way of life for these characters but following the heart could be their way to finding forever love. The quote on the book cover by The Lesbian Review is absolutely true… “Nobody writes a first kiss like Clare Lydon!” and Sloane isn’t the only one with a talent to fill Ella with “slow, glittery joy”. This heart-warming story will fill you up with that same kind of joy with Clare’s wonderfully crafted words.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a sweet story. It is written in British English, as befits the setting and one of the main characters, and the author does a pretty good job dealing with her American main character -- much better than I would do trying to write a British main character. So props for that. (I'm pretty familiar with British English and idioms, but there were still some terms I hadn't heard before and weren't explained, and while I'd like to know what they meant, that didn't detract unduly.) The descriptions of soccer (football) are quite well done; the author clearly loves the subject and is familiar with it. Sloane and Ella are sweet together, and the writing had some luminous moments.
My only complaint is the way the 3rd-act break up is handled. There is a misunderstanding in a ticklish and difficult situation, for which Sloane takes responsibility and apologizes. This is not unbelievable, under the circumstances. People who have been in this situation will recognize that it is not uncommon in relationships for one person to apologize for something they actually weren't responsible for and did their best to deal with, with the best of intentions. Sometimes in relationships, it's not worth it to escalate things and make them worse by insisting on being right, just for the sake of being right.
That's the situation presented here. The irony is that Ella's mantra as a professional is that you can't control life, you can only control your reaction to it. And she reacts badly to the situation she and Sloane find themselves in, through no fault of either of them.
So Sloane does the right thing, as best as she is able, in both initially trying to handle the situation and arguably in a taking responsibility and apologizing for it later, even though she did nothing wrong, most especially in a relationship as new as theirs. Sloane has no real control over Ella's reaction. Only Ella does, and in fact, had Sloane done in the beginning what it is stated Ella wanted her to do, the way the story is told, Ella would have reacted exactly the same way, maybe worse.
So the real issue here is not Sloane at all. It's Ella not following her own professional advice. Now this also is not uncommon in real life. However, this isn't real life, it's a romance. So it was disappointing to me that Ella (or so it seems) never really owns up to her failure here. She doesn't really apologize to Sloane for her misunderstanding of what happened and her inappropriate reaction to it.
That made me wonder what the author was thinking. Of course, there is an HEA, so everything is happily resolved, but with the impression left over is that Sloane messed up. Did the author really think Sloane was in the wrong? I came away feeling that what resolved things was Sloane apologizing for something that was really not her fault, and she did her best that was possible under the circumstances -- not that Ella came to an understanding of why she reacted as she did, and dealt with that issue fairly. Now, there is a flavor of that in the ending, but it seemed to me to be diluted and rather muddled. So again, I was left wondering what the author's thought process was. I would have preferred things to be better spelled out, and Ella to be clearer about her responsibility for what happened. As it was, I lost some sympathy for Ella and came away a bit dissatisfied.
Third-act breakups are hard to do well. Only a small minority of authors seem to handle them properly. From the other reviews, most readers -- that is, those who are inclined write reviews -- aren't bothered by the ending at all. So my feelings appear to be in the minority. These are issues I'm sensitive to, so they niggled me. Don't necessarily be put off by that. YMMV.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseClare Lydon has written one of the best love stories I have had the pleasure to read. If you read no love stories, read this one, it is that well done. She has a style and knack with words that few writers have. It may help if you are a football (soccer) fan but is not necessary. The characters just work so well together and the location may be one of my favorite places to visit, but even if you have never been there, you will feel at home. There was enough hot scenes to keep the usual romance enthusiasts happy as well. Don’t miss your chance to purchase any of Ms Lydon’s books, I keep mine on my shelf of reread often books.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI just got the book and couldn't put it down. Soccer has been my life and when reading this book I get the feeling of the game and bonus love romantic novels. Well written and read it in two days. Cute story!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was such a sweet read and Ella & Sloane were such a cute couple. You could see that they had chemistry right from the start, and I loved seeing their relationship develop from coaching staff/player to friends to lovers. The third act break up was something that was obvious, but I did like how they worked everything out with relatively minimum angst.
I also liked the soccer content. I’m not someone that follows soccer unless there’s a bandwagon to hop on, but I appreciated that the soccer content wasn’t overly technical. I don’t need to know how to play the sport I’m reading about in a fictional story, but I do need the be able to get the atmosphere & the feelings from what is written, and I think that Clare Lydon has done this really well - it’s obvious how much of a fan she is. I also loved Sloane’s hunt for some of her family history, and how she got more than she expected & got a tangible link to trailblazing women in soccer.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBeautifully written piece about Sloane and Ella’s journey to each other. The fact that it took place in the Women’s Football Arena is a huge plus. Many twists and turn throughout their journey, but they faced them together and love, honesty, and communication to seal their coupledom. Women’s Football is unbelievably fabulous!!! Megan Rapinoe is my spirit animal! A very good read. I enjoy Clare Lydon’s writing style. I thoroughly, enthusiastically recommend this and any other of Clare Lydon’s works. Thank you Peace

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a winner
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis sweet story of hotshot American striker Sloane and performance coach Ella had me hooked throughout.
I’m not a big football (soccer) fan but the setting at the club and the background story of how quickly things are changing in women’s sport made for a gripping and interesting read.
If you want a good romance with loveable, authentic characters you really want to root for I’d recommend this book, whether you love sports or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soccer / football romance
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseJust in time for the women’s World Cup the author presents a soccer / football romance set in England. While the American soccer star Sloane is highly committed other game, she doesn’t seem to be the wisest regarding relationships. Live style / performance coach Ella on the other hand can’t believe that a real hotshot football star might be interested in her. Okay, so I never quite understood the difference between a life style and performance coach and a team psychologist. Anyway, the author seems to have done some research on women’s football. There are also a number of very hot scenes. On the other hand the story follows the usual standards of lesbian romances. In so far, the story is quite predictable in some places.
It is very well written which compensated that weakness. She could have used a few more American expressions to give Sloane an even more authentic feel, but it’s understandable the author didn’t do that as mentioned in the foreword.
Overall, a feel-good romance set in the field of soccer / football. A must read for every supporter of women’s sports / football / soccer. Particularly in times of the World Cup

5.0 out of 5 stars Hat trick story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a lovely story I thoroughly enjoyed it and you will, especially if you are a football fanatic like I am, yes it's soccer here in Aus but as a Scot it's football.
The main characters are so well written and the description of the games obviously well researched by someone with the love of the game, a telling comment was the difference in the lives of the male and female players, you see so many if the women with their same sex partners and children at games, it's common place, so I do feel sorry that male players don't feel free to do the same.
With the impending world cup coming soon perhaps there's a second chapter for this couple, their new friends and families. Please.
I support Chelsea simply because of our amazing Sam Kerr, praying she isn't injured with so many games, our local team has the ageless Michelle Hayman, the woman's game is so much fun I encourage everyone to get on board.
Thanks for the read, romance and the beautiful game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enrapturing story, one cannot go wrong picking it ;)
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAwesome read and it made me realise it's been a while since I've read Clare Lydon (or any British authors) and boy, how I missed her writing!
The story was so entertaining, it doesn't go overboard with the sport talk, even though is all about football. It's about it, but the focus clearly is in the building friendship and subsequent "romantionship" between MC and it's done tastefully, not too slow, but not too fast. Talking about MC, they are cute together, they are grown ups, they are put together, they are more in the side of wholesome people, but you'll see them ultimately being human, in other words, being two idiots. One a stubborn and the other a chicken sheet that almost lost their thing, which was great and full of chemistry, because of silly (but also important) decisions.
Also, I loved all the points that were brought up about women's football and what it took for it to rise in the past years. As someone who loves sports and have a special place for football in her heart, it was enlightening, to reflect about some things that you know deep down, but need someone to point out to have the penny drop, to see it clearly. And the afterword were very touching too <3
Anyway, I didn't feel the +300 pages, the reading felt almost like a novella with how smooth it went. Easy pick, you guys.
