Four people ate locked in a hose and don't remember anything. They ate being watched. How far will they go to remember? Do they want those memories. Chilling. I received a complementary copy and left a voluntary review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stick around with this one and enjoy the chaos.

A tricky one to review because for the first 100 pages (and that might seem a big investment, but it really isnt), The House of Forgotten People hovered around the three stars for me. I was desperate to know more about the characters, but they just couldn't remember a thing, and that made me struggle to connect with them. With short chapters, and not much happening, and had anyone else written it, I might have just put the book down altogether. The thing is, though, knowing Jennifer Bernardini's previous work, and how once she gets to the heart of a story, the pages always fly. And here she does it again. Action scenes. She absolutely nails it. That feeling of running out of time is beautifully played out here. You feel right in the thick of it, the chaos. Completely invested. You see the ending approaching and you almost don't want it to. And I'll tell you what's quite strange about that. It almost makes you forget the beginning. That's what I mean about it being a tricky one to review.
But hand on heart, Jennifer is on the brink of writing something very special soon. I know it, and everyone will be talking about it.
This is a three star beginning that ends in a five, so, to be fair, I have to give this a solid four.
The House of Forgotten People takes a while to get going, but the pay off is great. Jen's a super talent.
And I also have to add that if this was an audiobook, the beginning would probably have worked better for me. I genuinely feel having the characters voices in my head would have helped a great deal with this.

Take your time climbing the ladder for the first fifty percent, and buckle up for the dive in the next.
