A Chance Encounter in Pemberley Woods: A Pride & Prejudice Variation Kindle Edition
A baby alone in the woods
And a second chance at love.
Fitzwilliam Darcy returns to his beloved Pemberley with one thing on his mind—to forget Elizabeth Bennet. Riding ahead of his party and racing a storm, he happens upon the very woman he wants to avoid. To his astonishment, she is holding a baby whose name and parentage are unknown.
Elizabeth Bennet never dreamed she had wandered into Pemberley’s woods on her afternoon walk. But when she finds an infant alone in the storm, she turns to the last man in the world she wants to see—and the only one who can help them both.
As the mystery of the baby’s identity intensifies, Elizabeth finds Mr. Darcy to be quite different from what she expected. But when the child’s family is discovered, will the truth bring them together or tear them apart?

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2019“A Chance Encounter” begins at a familiar place in the canon story: the chance meeting of Elizabeth and Darcy at Pemberley.
This time, Darcy returns riding through the Pemberley Woods in an attempt to reach the manor house before a storm breaks. He is shocked to discover Elizabeth Bennet alone in the woods – alone, that is, except for the presence of an infant.
Elizabeth has found the little girl in the woods and has attempted to care for her, hoping the child’s parents would return. She accepts Darcy’s offer of a ride to Pemberley to keep the child from a chill. Darcy begins an investigation to find the person who abandoned the baby to die.
Our dear couple has an opportunity to resolve issues and declare their love. Canon events proceed with variations.
Some issues are unresolved at the end and the story seems a little incomplete. Wickham holds a winning card in the game he plays with Darcy. Is there to be a second part to the story?
The book has a great cover with a most beautiful gown. Take a moment to appreciate it.
This is a good story with less angst than I usually like in JAFF. It is well-written and proofread. Read it when you need a break from the tension.
3.5 stars rounded up.
Life is a flame that is always burning itself out, but it catches fire again every time a child is born. ~ George Bernard Shaw
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2020I was surprised a few times when what I was hoping wouldn't happen did concerning Lydia's infamous elopement, and again when the parentage of Daisy was revealed. I suppose I was hoping for a more creative villain, but it was written so nicely I didnt mind. It turned out to be a nice mild Austen retelling. Enjoyable, but a bit tame, as I was expecting more adventure. I am not sure what was fed to motherless infants back in the day, but traditional cows milk doesnt contain the right nutrients for a human baby. They should have written in a wet nurse for Daisy, or alluded to the fact that they were looking.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2019I enjoyed this story, though it sticks very close to the original and veers only slightly from canon. There’s not much conflict, so it’s pleasant but not terribly involving. There’s one wonders image of Mr. Darcy holding a baby while napping that will stay with me. I will read more of this author’s work - it was well-written and perfectly edited.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2019I gave it four stars as the story well written and kept my attention. Elizabeth finds a baby in the woods and Darcy finds them in a storm. The couple falls in love with the baby and finally acknowledges their feelings for each other. This follows by a letter from Jane to announce her happy news with Bingley but also bad news of Lydia’s elopement. Darcy forces the marriage and finds his happiness with Elizabeth.
The one problem I have is how did the baby end up in the woods and how did Darcy find information about the mother. There was no details. If you throw a baby into the mix, I want details. The ending left me wanting to know what happened. If there is going to be another story there should be some kind of indication. So no five stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2019I enjoyed this book so much. It had all the things I enjoy in a P&P variation. The author kept Elizabeth and Darcy true to cannon, with the exception of being a little more forthright with one another. There was plenty of time with ODC, and not much angst. And it was clean without being prudish and dull. It is also worth noting that it is well edited.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2019Interesting premise and a magnanimous Darcy, but not very realistic.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2020This was a cute, light variation that goes good with a cozy blanket and something warm to drink. Not too angst filled, clean, well edited. Great job!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting change of pace
I found it an enjoyable story. The slightly different plot and situation make an interesting change of the renewed acquaintance between Elizabeth and Darcy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read!
This was a tintillating retelling of Darcy and Elizabeth's love story. However the introduction of Wickham left a bad taste for me, in particular as the baby's parent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Chance Encounter.
I loved reading these few chapters, but the book ended way too, too fast. This story had all the elements that I love in P&P; we have love, forgiveness, vengence and so much more. Some problems were settled to fast. There were elements that could have been added after the marriage.
I really enjoyed reading this book, (I know it doesn't sound like it, but I did) and I know that you will too. I rated this book a 4 star winner. I hope there is a sequel.
