    There are several alterations to Pride and Prejudice in addition to Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy's unfortunate experience with a pair of French spies. All contribute to a happy ending for the pair in this pleasant novella.

    During Elizabeth's stay at Netherfield, Darcy makes it a point to apologize to her for his insulting comment at the Meryton assembly, which she gracefully accepts. This leads to more pleasant interactions between the two, though he still believes he can't seriously consider marrying her. She shares that her sister hides her feelings from others - something Darcy understands because he does the same - and this eases his concern that Bingley's admiration for Jane might be one-sided.

    After seeing Elizabeth with Mr. Wickham in Meryton, Darcy feels compelled to warn her about his childhood friend - much earlier than in canon. This has the unfortunate effect of arousing Elizabeth's curiosity, which gets her into trouble. When Darcy's attempt to save her goes awry, they both find themselves captives of the aforementioned spies.

    The story is nicely written, particularly the dialogue. Elizabeth shows her quick verbal wit in conversation - something described but often not demonstrated at all or as well in other JAFF. Ms. Huey does a great job developing the romantic chemistry between Elizabeth and Darcy as well as building dramatic tension when the two are trying to elude the villains. The plot moves at a brisk pace, as is appropriate for a novella.

    I do think a little more depth regarding the spies' operation is needed, even if it's just communication from London or Colonel Fitzwilliam stating that more information is confidential and could not be shared. The total lack of curiosity about the spies' intended mission in Meryton doesn't seem credible.

    Even though their story is far in the background here, Jane and Bingley's romance also feels a bit unfinished. When Darcy realizes Jane may truly care for his friend, he reflects on Bingley's ever-changing allegiance to his series of "angels" and hopes that Bingley will not hurt her in the end. Even a very brief exchange between Bingley and Darcy to reassure the latter of Bingley's serious intentions would clear this little hanging thread.

    Overall, though, it's a quick, entertaining read.

    I really enjoyed this book as it was well written and had a good level of detail in it. Elizabeth and Darcy seem to be drawn to one another in this story from the beginning. That Darcy apologizes for his remark at the Assembly while she is staying at Netherfield nursing Jane just feels right for this tale. I would enjoy reading more books by this author in the future.

    With only 76 pages I can only blame some busyness for not finishing this sooner.

    In this story Darcy not only apologizes to Elizabeth for his insult and attitude but also warns her about Wickham much earlier. However, Elizabeth, not wanting to just repeat his words as they might only be considered gossip decides to follow Denny and Wickham when she sees them in a serious discussion in town, hoping to collect reasons to condemn them to her acquaintances on what she overhears. However, they realize she is following and snatch her. Darcy just happens to see them and tries to rescue her.

    Elizabeth is taken to an abandoned barn. Darcy is also overcome and then is tied up but Wickham convinces Denny that they don't need to tie Elizabeth up for as a lady she could not possibly escape from the hay loft in which they are kept. Wickham and Denny sleep below making escape down the ladder impossible.

    However, Elizabeth's skills as a youngster climbing trees come into play and they escape...only to have Wickham and Denny very quickly following them. There is some angst here as they try to find ways to run in which they will not be seen as they attempt to reach Longbourn.

    Early on we have learned from the Colonel that it is suspected that there are French spies in Meryton and the conversations between Wickham and Denny reveal that to be true. We don't learn exactly what kind of information they are collecting for the French, but the punishment for any type of treason is the gallows.

    Both realize that being in the hay loft together over night and then running through the country side together unchaperoned mean that Elizabeth has been compromised and that they must marry. Do they resent this? Read and find out.

    I enjoyed this short story. I have read three other stories by this author and also enjoyed those.

    I can't say there was a whole lot of substance to this story but it was well written and interesting. I particularly liked the way Darcy was portrayed throughout the entire story. The time Lizzy spends at Netherfield is slightly altered and I liked it much better, particularly with most of it told from Darcy's POV. I understand what the author was trying to do with Wickham but it could have been expanded on to make it clearer. Most of the time I say the novella story line can easily be converted to a much more in- depth full story but this is one I feel fits the novella format extremely well.

    I'd say this is lower in angst than I expected. As I don't handle angst all that well it's a good thing for me. Overall, I liked it and would read it from time to time.

    If you're looking for the drama of true peril you may be disappointed. There are a few tense pages but most of the story is about Lizzy and Darcy learning to understand and love each other.
