Do you wish your dog would listen to you on walks, rather than running after squirrels?
Tired of getting left in the dust if a cat shows up nearby?
Concerned that your dog’s prey drive is coming between the two of you?

Conventional training protocols stifle your dog’s natural predatory behaviours through punishing or constantly forcing them to return. These restrictive protocols work against your dog’s nature and against what they want most: to go for a hunt!
Predation is an inner need that makes your dog happy. Suppressing those natural urges is like putting an airtight lid on a boiling pot. Eventually, that pressure needs to escape, and without a proper outlet, it’s probably going to get messy. Wouldn’t you rather use your dog’s predation motivation to improve your training and even grow your relationship with your dog?

Predation Substitute Training (PST) is a motivation-based and need-oriented training program, designed to stop uncontrolled predatory chasing and to provide safe outlets for your dog’s natural drive. Instead of making discipline the nagging factor that spoils the fun, this training system will help you grow as a team and go hunting together!

In this training program, you’ll learn:
  • What is predation?
  • Why does your dog love to hunt?
  • Why is predatory behaviour so hard to interrupt?

To stop your dog’s predatory chasing and see real-life results, just follow the step-by-step instructions:
  • Prevention: Structure your walks to set your dog up for success
  • Predation Substitute Tools: Help your dog control their urge to chase in a healthy way when you meet wildlife
  • Predation Substitute Games: Discover new ways to express predatory energy in a safe, controlled environment
  • Safety net: Build a strong “emergency cue” to immediately interrupt predatory chasing.

Is hunting your dog’s favourite hobby? Don’t spoil the fun - go hunting together!

About the Author

Predation Substitute Training

Hi, I'm Simone!

I'm so glad that you are here!

I am a certified dog trainer, dog behaviour consultant and specialist for high prey-drive dogs.

In this book, I share my years of experience as a trainer of dogs that love to chase wildlife.

With this force-free training protocol, you can look forward to learning how to successfully manage your dog's hunting behaviour.

I love supporting high prey-drive dogs and dog guardians across the world to grow together as a team.

Learn to harness your dog's prey drive

Predation Substitute Training

For dogs that love to chase wildlife

Every dog has an instinctive need to hunt. Most training methods that aim to control predatory behaviour use force and punishment to work against a dog’s hunting desires. The result: your relationship with your dog suffers and you become a spoilsport!

But it doesn’t have to be this way! You can also use your dog's natural predatory instinct to strengthen your relationship and boost the success of your training.

Predation Substitution Training is a need-orientated training protocol that encourages you to harness your dog's natural hunting instinct in a fun and enjoyable way to allow you to successfully manage it safely.

Start your training like a pro - with more fun!

  • Mutual Understanding: Learn what motivates your dog.
  • Force-Free Training: Utilise your dog's natural predatory urges!
  • Have Fun Together: Get to know fun and effective training games!
  • Teach An Emergency Cue: Reliably interrupt dangerous situations without punishment.

Build a stronger bond

Build a stronger bond

Predation Substitute Training allows you to build up a deep trust between you and your dog through play. Instead of punishing them when they show undesirable behaviour, you can experience individual parts of the hunting sequence together with your dog. Shared emotions lead to a stronger bond.

Use game-based training methods

Use game-based training methods

Training should be fun for you and your dog! The Predation Substitute Training I have introduced is based on your dog's predatory motivation: You use their natural urges to hunt and turn this into a game with you. The training will be fun for both of you!

Communicate effectively

Communicate effectively

Communication with your dog is crucial for effective training. With game-based Predation Substitute Training, you will improve communication with your dog and refine the language you share. This will also help you with further training in other areas too!

Young AE Coonhound Mt. Cur rescue. High prey drive. Living in a suburb. She was extremely leash reactive to wildlife. Now I get lots of compliments about how well behaved she is as squirrels jump all around us. I knew I had to do something when this dog grabbed and killed a bird while on a 6 ft lead in the middle of downtown. I read the book and watched videos. Put the steps in practice for a few months before writing this review. This method works ! I will be reading the rest of the books in the series.

This book and the ideas put forward really helped me better understand my dog. I have been struggling to understand and manage her prey drive and each time I think I have cracked the code - she takes off on one of her adventures. The day before I bought this book I had randomly stopped on a walk and allowed my dog to watch a herd of elk from a distance. I noticed afterwards that she had walked so much better and was more relaxed - this makes total sense after reading this book and I look forward to exploring the approach and techniques suggested.

Simone has compiled an assortment of tools for dogs who love to chase wildlife (and humans who don’t). She explains all of the exercises in such a clear way, that they are easy and fun to implement. I have been working on the skills I learned in this book with my young Rottweiler mix… I feel so much more connected to her while we are out on walks, and she has started to run back to me when she sees squirrels to play games with me!
    Thank you Simone!!!

I got this book because my dog obsesses over the squirrels that live in our backyard. He anct caught and killed one a few days ago. 🙁 Early in the book, it tells you not to use this method for this, and a few other situations. Would have been nice to know this ahead of time.

From what I have read so far, it looks more about dogs going after wildlife when you are out on a walk, or at a park. We will be trying this method with him on walks. I’ll update in a couple of months.

I've spent the better part of the past year trying to train a 1 year-old rescue mutt. Working with professional trainers and watching online videos has been great, and she's making progress, but this book and its companion "Rocket Recall" has filled in some blanks in my understanding of how dogs think and approaches to training them. The author here truly understands how dogs think and her insights on why they do what they do are right on the money. She does a good job explaining the exercises she recommends with nice little cartoonish drawings and photos. Highly recommended.

I’m a certified trainer and this book has helped me and my husky/shepherd enjoy our hunting sessions together. She gets it and I get her! So much more fun than punishing the hunt out of her. Absolutely love and recommend this approach. Thank you Simone!

This book was easy to read and not too complex for the average dog guardian. I’m a professional trainer and I’ve used the exercises in this book with multiple of the dogs I work with and have found them to be effective and actually quite fun. I also appreciated that common issues were troubleshooted.

I have a mixed breed dog who is part hound, part terrier, and part Rottweiler. He has a strong desire to hunt squirrels and other rodents (birds are safe) The Information here, like most dog training, seems like it should be common sense! I am astounded by how helpful the training and games are for us. Thank you and I can’t wait to read the other two books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent analysis of dog behaviour
Reviewed in Belgium on March 7, 2024
This book helped me a lot to understand the genetics of my bird-hunting dog and explains what goes into a dogs mind when their hunting instinct kicks in. It's very well written, simple language and easy to understand. I am going to buy the other books from this author as she seems to understand dogs from a better perspective than some trainers who believe in force and authority alone.

Did like the text and figures. It explains the approach clearly. More examples for different lind of dog could be added and info how to analyse your dog’s reaction and giving proper feedback. Very expensive for the one topic. I would have expected more for the price or a lower price.

Really loved the approach of this book and how it links the dogs’ natural behaviour with training. The moment I started to apply the suggested PST I saw a huge improvement both in my perception of my dog’s life and as a result an improvement in my dog’s behaviour.
