El autor aborda en esta propuesta narrativa una visión muy personal de la cama, un mueble tenido como simple y útil, pero aparentemente plano y reacio al tratamiento literario. Sin embargo, somos en extremo injustos con ella, pues lleva acompañándonos desde hace milenios por lo que se hace difícil regatearle un ensayo monográfico. De hecho, este libro tiene notables y distinguidos habitantes, personajes cuya relación con el lecho ha sido cuando menos peculiar ¿Cuántas camas tuvo Cristo si es que tuvo alguna? ¿Por qué dormía con las armas bajo la cama el príncipe Don Juan, el hijo de los Reyes Católicos? ¿Qué pasó con la cama de Fidel Castro? ¿Con quién dormía Stalin? La cama es algo más que un mueble, es un testigo de los azares de la existencia: intrigas, confidencias, amores, odios. Muchas emociones humanas se han tejido sobre las cuatro tablas que constituyen su estructura básica y desde luego no es un mueble silencioso ni discreto. La cama tiene distintos medios para dejar entrever lo que, sobre ella, bajo ella y alrededor de ella acontece. No todas las camas son iguales, se abre un abismo entre la cama del opulento y la del humilde que, incluso, se ve obligado a elegir, viéndose abocado a utilizar su cama como combustible si no quiere perecer de frio. Pero hasta los más poderosos enfrentan la cama con perspectivas diferentes, la reina Isabel I de Castilla no podía dormir si no disponía de al menos seis o siete colchones, en tanto el zar Pedro I «el Grande» prefería reposar su cabeza en la barriga de un criado, apurando así las resacas de sus diarias borracheras. El autor se propone convertirse en un forense social, un arqueólogo del lecho, las sábanas, los colchones y las almohadas. Espero y confío que el texto sea de su agrado.
