The journal comes to Sara McMillan by chance, when she inherits the key to an abandoned storage locker belonging to a woman named Rebecca. Sara can’t resist peeking at the entries inside . . . and finds a scintillating account of Rebecca’s affair with an unnamed lover, a relationship drenched in ecstasy and wrapped in dark secrets.
Obsessed with discovering Rebecca’s destiny after the entries come to an abrupt end, Sara does more than observe the players in the woman’s life; she immerses herself in the high-stakes art gallery world Rebecca inhabited—and is magnetically drawn to two men. Which one seduced Rebecca with his masterful and commanding touch and brought her fantasies to exquisite life? On a daringly erotic escapade, Sara follows Rebecca’s path to fulfill her own hidden longings. But after she tastes the forbidden pleasures Rebecca savored, will Sara be helpless to escape the same submissive fate?

- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThere are good authors, there are great author, and then there are brilliant authors. Lisa Renee Jones is a brilliant author that knows just how to draw a reader in on the first page of her book and keep a hold of them long after the book is over. If I Were You is by far the best book I have read so far this year and I have read a lot of books. I read books about love and romance and books that are erotic but there is nothing out there quite like this book. This isn't just a book about dominant male men and sex this books is all full of suspense and leaves you guessing even after the book is over. There are very few authors that can keep you glued to a chair for eight hours straight but this has author has done that to me. I started reading If I Were You today at about 1 pm by 9 pm I was done the only time I got up was to use the bathroom and once to get something to eat that hasn't even happened to me before. I am still having withdrawals from the book and I finished the book four hours ago and yet the cliffhanger at the end of the book still has me wondering what will happen next to Sara and has me still wondering about Rebecca and her journals.
This book has been on my to read list since I bought it a few months back but I was asked to do a feature of this author and a review so I picked it up and started reading it expecting to find what so many books have in common simple characters and sex. Don't get me wrong this book has some incredibly hot scenes in it and there's nothing wrong with a book that is primarily about sex, but this book was so much more than that. At the beginning of the book is a journal entry from that moment on I was hooked it seemed to me that the journal entry was being written by that person at that very moment to my surprise it wasn't being written then but being read my the main character in this book Sara McMillan a high school English teacher and the journal was left by her next door neighbor Ella the night before who wants the journal back so she and her boyfriend can read it. The reader learns that Ella got the journal from a storage unit auction after getting hooked on the TV show Storage Wars and that the locker is full of paintings and other personal items. Ella ends up running off the elope with her new boyfriend and leaves Sara with the key to the storage unit telling her she can take everything that is in it and sell its contents and keep the profit. When Sara goes to the unit she discovers three additional journals, a locked box, and a storage full of paintings and other personal items discovering that the owner of the unit one Rebecca Mason and discovers a locked box after an employee from the storage place tells her there are always secrets kept in dresser drawers one question the book did leave me with is who was this mysterious and creepy storage worker? He just gave me this sense that he was either looking for something or has some secret he is hiding I wonder if he'll come up again in one of the other books.
During her search through Rebecca's storage unit she also looks for clues in her personal papers to see if she can discover anything that might lead her to Rebecca since she wants to return her items to her since what she's read from the journal is so personal and she doesn't feel right keeping it or selling this woman's personal belongings. In her search she finds that Rebecca works at an art gallery there is San Francisco but every time she calls the workers keep telling her that Rebecca is on a personal leave and has not returned. Sara starts to grow impatient so she finds out that in a few days there is an art showing for a local artist by the name of Ricardo Alvarez so she goes to the showing with the intent of finding out what happened to Rebecca and where she can be found. Two things happen that night she meets the owner of the gallery Mark Compton and is offered a job since she ends up selling a painting and studied art in college and she also meets Chris Merit the handsome artist that Sara happened to study in college and is a huge fan of. Mark and Chris are complete different types of men Mark is a dark dominant type and Chris appears to have a much softer sign but with all things looks can be deceiving. As the story goes on Sara seems to lose herself in Rebecca. Sara and Rebecca have so many things in common that it's scary. They both love art and Sara feels like she's living in Rebecca's life filling in for her and working out of her office. They both fall for the same type of men that want control and power over their women and want to dominate more than anything else. It was very interesting to see Sara mold and grow into her own person through Rebecca's journal entries and find her own footing in the art world; Sara wants so much to have a career in art and she's finally got her shot. The relationship that grows between Chris and Sara was very fascinating to me these characters didn't just go through the motions of a relationship these characters grew and evolved as the story progressed and as you get further into the story the secrets start to come out not just with them but also with Mark which left me wondering exactly how much Mark was involved with Rebecca and her 'master' as she referred to him since his name was never mentioned in her journal entries. Did he have something to do with her disappearance? Does she know where she is? Is he the other man that she was shared with? I cannot wait to find out the answer to these questions. Then there was Chris and his secrets from that first time he and Sara have sex from that moment it becomes clear that the image that was painted of Chris as a person is completely different from this dominate dark man who has her pressed up against the glass wall of his apartment which was HOTT. Chris has a lot of secrets and demons that he is dealing with and he keeps telling Sara that she should stay away from him that she will run away from him eventually but I hope she doesn't because despite his secrets I truly did love the character Chris and I can't wait to read more about him.
The characters in this book were incredibly depicted and I thoroughly enjoyed this book I cannot wait to read the other books in this series as well as the journals. This was by far one of the best books I have ever read and didn't bore me even for one second I think everyone should read this book it had a little bit of everything and will only leave you wanting more of Chris and Sara.

I had heard so much about If I Were You and was sooo excited for its release on August 24. I spent the whole day before refreshing my browser on Amazon to see, just in case, I was lucky enough to have it be released early. So, when it finally came through, I could hardly wait to dive in. I will say, I was a bit apprehensive to read this, well not really to read it, but I was apprehensive to whether I'd like it or not. With the opening of the blurb saying "Fifty Shades meets Basic Instinct," I knew I wasn't ready for a Fifty Shades of Grey ripoff. I can tell you this, it was not a rip off, and for that, I'm eternally grateful. There were similarities, yes, but not enough to classify it a copy, by any means.
This story was fantastic on so many levels. Two hot, powerful and rich men for starters. And really I could stop there. :) But more than that, there was is this crazy, twisted, mysterious storyline...and after finishing the first book, I still have NO idea where it's going to go. And I LOVE THAT. I do regret that I could only finish the first book, and not immediately pick up the second...and then the third. I have ZERO patience when it comes to book series that I love. ZERO.
So for the characters - Sara, our main girl (art school educated turned high school English teacher) - she gets these "erotic" journals from her best friend Ella (who finds them in some chick's storage locker that she purchased at auction - think Storage Wars). After Ella takes off for a ridiculously long European vacation with her doctor fiance, Sara is left to figure out what to do with the contents of the locker. But she can't just do that. She wants to know what happened to the girl (Rebecca) who wrote the journals. Sara can't figure out why Rebecca would leave so many very valuable personal affects in her storage locker and never claim them. Surely there's more to the story...and that leads her to Allure Art Gallery, where she figures out Rebecca was previously employed. Sara takes on a summer job at the gallery in order to try and figure out where Rebecca went or what happened to her. Along the way, we also get some tidbits into Sara's past, ones that I'm positively DYING to know more about!
It's at the gallery that Sara comes across our two hotties - Mark Compton (owner of gallery, super mysterious, veryyyy bossy) and Chris Merit (delicious and uber talented artist). There's so much to all of their relationships and I loved how Ms. Jones entwined them all and how the relationships evolved. Just when I thought I had one dynamic figured out - boom - something changed and it wasn't what I seemed. LOVE that in a story. I won't go into the plot much more, because it's definitely just one of those "need to read it to experience it" kinds of books.
There were so many twists and turns in the story (and characters that I know are still so untapped and there's gonna be some craziness with them too), and I did NOT want it to end. And hey, speaking of the ending...holy hell. Again, ZERO patience for waiting. So February can't come soon enough - except it can because side tidbit about me - February is my least favorite month. I HATE IT. I think we should go from January to March. It's pointless and uncomfortable and ICK. So Being Me (which is the title of the second book) will be the only bright spot in an otherwise bleak month.
Another thing I most note, as always...delicious steam. Chris is one fine piece of you-know-what. He's domineering, sexy and talented with his hands (literally). What more could you ask for? He challenges Sara - but she pushes back. And I love that about her and about their relationship. He's a freaking dichotomy. Chris wants Sara close to "protect" her, but he also pushes her away and says he's dangerous for her. That's a bit where it's like Christian Grey and Ana Steele. He warns her, she trudges onward; he is closed off, she tries to make him reveal his darkest secrets; he doesn't know what she's doing to him, she likes that she's able to get inside of him. That is where this parallels a bit, but again, not to a fault. It's still very original.
Like I mentioned above about the characters - I can tell there's going to be WAY more we learn about all of them in the coming books - or at least I hope so. For instance, Ella - what the hell? What's up with her? And Mark? There's more to his story...and does he have a connection to Ava, the coffee shop owner? And how does all this fit together with Rebecca? And what's the beef between Mark & Chris? See! Sooo many twists and immensely chock full of suspense.
If I had to give one negative to the story - it'd be the crazy, crazy editor in me. Nothing slips by me, I swear. There were a few more proofing errors than I normally like...but hey, when it's a strong story, that's easy to forgive.
I give this book 4 stars and highly recommend to any adult looking for a super steamy, keeps-you-guessing-suspenseful story. There's a little of everything in here: sweet romance, unadulterated dirty passion, crazy suspense and plenty of mystery to make you scratch your head wondering how the hell the story just ended...like that. Because I don't think I've said this enough, I cannot wait for the second installment of this series, Being Me to be released sometime in February 2013. I'll make sure to post any updates I receive from the author as I hear anything! So go now, buy this book and get reading! You won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A SEDUCTIVE PAGE TURNER
First of a trilogy, and a first read for me by this author. The blurb says this is Fifty Shades of Grey meets Basic instincts. So far in this first story I am not seeing either of those.
Sara McMillan is an English teacher, she appears to just plod along in life, no boyfriends or casual relationships either. Her best friend Emma has left a journal in Sara's flat, and although she knows she shouldn't she reads it. Believing it to be Emma's, what she reads shocks her. Sara didn't think for a minute that her friend Emma was into the sort of things described there. But when Emma arrives she laughs that Sara thought this journal was hers. Emma looking to make some money had bought up the contents of some storage units where the owners had failed to keep up the rents. This journal was inside one of the units. Emma announces that her rich doctor boyfriend David whom she has only known for three months has proposed and they are off to Paris. Sara is concerned she has only met this guy once herself. But Emma is ecstatic and will not hear anything negative, regarding her plans.
Emma gifts Sara the contents of the storage units. So begins Sara's obsession with finding the owner of the journal. After visiting the storage unit Sara discovers that there are more journals. The author a woman named Rebecca worked at "Riptide" a well known and respected art Gallery. Without going into too much detail, Sara after attending an evening function at said gallery manages to wangle herself a job there. As school is out for the summer, this presents no problem. Plus quite conveniently Sara has a degree in Art, and interned at an art museum.
The enigmatic and powerful manager Mark Compton sees something in Sara and is keen for her to do well. Sara is rather intimidated by Mark. Then there is Chris Merit the famous painter, who is attracted to Sara, she in turn finds him totally fascinating. They very quickly embark on a torrid affair.
I liked this first installment very much. The characters are well drawn. Everyone has secrets just waiting to come out. What is Mark really after, Chris is obviously tormented by something in his past, and as for Rebecca the whole reason for Sara being there we do not find out very much except that she is on an open ended vacation. Has something bad happened to her or not? I thought Sara should have been a little more concerned about her best friend Emma, rather than some stranger she has never met. Because it seemed to me that Sara just wants to live Rebecca's life, and escape from her own monotonous existence. For those readers who are more mystery and suspense fans this might not be your thing, as that part of the story is not very prominent. In fact this is what I would class as an erotic romance. There are some hints to BDSM, but that is all. Whether that will be expanded on in the next book we shall have to wait and see. As to who is the un-named man in the journals, there are clues, but they could be red herrings.
This certainly was an addictive read, I eagerly await the next book.

Format: Mass Market PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis was a very enjoyable book. Once I started, nothing was going to get me to put it down.
It moved along at a great pace, had very interesting characters and a story that was entertaining from the very beginning. When I finished the book, I needed more and was upset as I didn't have the next book yet.
Lisa Renee Jones is an awesome author and I look forward to reading much more from this talented author in the near future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend
I have to admit I'm not normally a fan of the dom/sub books but this one is written perfectly; there's an air of mystery and suspense flowing through the heart of the story that kept me reading. Where is Rebecca?!?!?!
The sex scenes were extremely hot but tame considering what the story hints towards, so I get the feeling that the dom/sub scenes will only get more intense and frequent as the story progresses.
I love that there are so many twists and turns and that the answers just seem to dig up more questions for me. I did find Sara slightly annoying in that she's supposedly worried for a "friend" yet allows herself to be distracted so easily... but then if you're not shouting at the characters in the book then it's not a good book in my eyes 😊
There are however 2 paragraphs that annoyed me; both concern Sara's inferiority complex when it comes to money. The scene where Chris hands the valet $100 and she's says in outrage that it's "one 6th of her weekly wage"!?!?! I would LOVE to earn $600 a week!!!!! And her feeling inferior kinda made me feel like a bum to be honest. But that's my inferior showing 😉 and I'm not going to hold it against the author or the characters haha
I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would and thanks to the ending I will definitely be purchasing the next in the series
