In The Mood... For Murder (The 'For Murder' series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 62 ratings

Liverpool in 1946, post war and swinging…

The Rialto theatre is a hotbed of the Big Band Swing scene, with bands playing most nights to full crowds of youngsters looking to forget the drudgery of everyday life, rations and the ruins of the blitz.

The Downswing Seven are The Rialto’s house band who are in the need of a new singer, much to the annoyance of George Hogg, the drummer. His disability had prevented him from seeing active service during the war, and now it’s preventing him from fulfilling his dream of fronting the band as the lead male vocal.

Are somethings worth killing for?
George certainly thinks so… In The Mood for Murder is a period thriller, set against the backdrop of post-war Liverpool.

D E McCluskey was born in 1973, in Liverpool, England. He is the author of novels, graphic novels and comics. He lives with his daughter (an author in her own right (at the age of 8) with her children's adventure The Hangry Hamster), his partner, her daughter, and a sausage dog called Ted.

He began writing in 2011, creating his first comic publication entitled Interesting Tymes, an anthology of short horror stories written in rhyme for children and adults. This was quickly followed by the second in the series, along with a spin off. Dave then moved on to more adult related fiction, releasing a number of one-shot comics, followed by his first, full length book, the graphic novel, Doppelgänger.

More graphic novels and comics ensued, including a collaboration with artist Joe Matthews to produce a retelling of the classic Christmas tale, A Christmas Carol, only this time rewritten completely in rhyme.

Dave then turned his sights onto writing novels. His debut novel The Twelve was released in 2017 to great reviews. This was followed by a collaboration with a local, Liverpool music historian, to produce a historical thriller called In The Mood… For Murder, based in Liverpool in 1946.

Dave likes to work mostly in dark, or mainstream horror, although he has cross genres into extreme horror, comedy, thrillers, romantic drama, and children's books.

He is also working with a number of other authors/comic creators, in collaborations in their works.

Second story I've read by this author and wasn't disappointed, thanks!!

Just finished this book and I have to say its well worth the read. Great character development with a very atmospheric setting, making you feel as if you are right there during that time period. Keeps you guessing about whats going to happen next while leading up to some very clever twists and turns I was not expecting, and an ending I didn't see coming leaving me wanting to read more. Cant wait to read the next one!

Really good story and I absolutely loved the setting (Post WWII). Characters were very true to the timeframe and there was enough background to each of them to know whether you would like/hate them. Book definitely has future movie written all over it. The Downbeat Seven (the swing band most of the characters are from) show the different sides of each, but mostly George, Faye, Carl, Brian and Eddie). Each have ulterior motives going on in the background, but some worse than others. The Realto (Theater) owner, Red, is no boy scout either. As the story progresses, you'll get to see how the ending is a complete surprise. Awesome read!

I was captivated by this story from the start. The excitement of the music and the lush description of the Rialto made it a place I would have loved to visit. The dysfunctional combination of all the members of The Downswing Seven made for a cast of characters you could love and hate equally. The ending was nothing like I expected. Very much looking forward to the sequel!

In the Mood for Murder is a novel full of mystery, suspense and mayhem. Set in the years shortly after World War II, Liverpool is a place of clubs and plentiful music. This story follows a band in Liverpool called the Downswing Seven and their interactions with each other and those they entertain.

We are taken back to a time when swing bands and music was a large focus in people’s lives. The parties were never ending and the drugs and liquor flowed freely. George Hogg is one of the band members, and the main character who tells us his story. He gets by life as a cripple thanks to his clubbed foot and is partly ashamed he couldn’t serve as a soldier during the war. Instead, he worked supporting roles at home protecting the public during the threat of air raids.

The other band members are a colorful crew with multiple personalities that somehow manage to get along. Everyone has their secrets and they will do just about anything to keep the others from finding out.

The imagery of 1940s Liverpool is fantastic. We get a full sense of the sounds, smells and slang going on at the time. This is one of those stories that the reader is fully immersed into. I honestly felt like I was traveling through time each time I picked up where I left off. I really enjoyed this book and was sad to see it end. There were many twists and turns I did not see coming. Overall, it was a great thrilling read during a historic time. Definitely worth the read, so go get your copy!

This was a good one, folks. Set in 1940’s post-war Britain, we find that The Rialto is the hot spot to be. Hotter yet is the band, the Downswing Seven. Centered around the members of the band, the story takes us through the interpersonal relationships of the members. Having been in bands, I found it pretty relatable. Everyone is in it for different reasons, but everyone loves to make the music.
Then there is George. George is the drummer and not what one expects. As things unfurl, we find out everyone’s secrets and how they fuel the increasing spiral of events. And for the record, I did not expect this ending. (also for the record I totally heard Come Dancing by The Kinks as the credits roll) How this isn’t a movie yet, I don’t know.
Jitterbug your way to this one, for sure.

A must read for anyone that enjoys drama and suspense. I could see this adapted for TV. Any good book needs you to develop feelings for the characters and by the end of the book this was definitely the case. The ending will leave you wondering what happened next....

Full disclosure up front - I am an audiobook narrator and I have worked for this author on two different books. However, I purchased this book, like any other customer and have no agenda other than my own reading pleasure… and what a pleasure it was. There are twists and turns throughout and yet this book never becomes ungrounded. A pleasure to read - and on a professional note - it would be a joy to narrate ( although I’m not fishing, ).

Found this book a little difficult to get into initially. There were a few spelling errors which annoyed me a bit, but once I got over those and into the story, it was very enjoyable with like-able characters and a good twist at the end. Looking forward to reading the next one.

Honestly couldn't put this book down. The writers really got to the essence of the characters, so much so that I was crying "No" into my kindle at the final twist. Thoroughly enjoyable story and believable characters.
