If You Hate Me (The Toronto Terror Series) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 11,549 ratings

A brand new standalone extra spicy hate-to-love (they really, really can't stand each other), brother's best friend hockey romance.

Hate is a gentle word. Eternal loathing is more accurate.
Pro hockey player with a filthy reputation and an even filthier mouth? That’s Tristan Stiles, also known as my brother’s best friend and my ungodly hot new roommate.

I thought it would be fine, just a quick stay after I rage quit my job while I look for a new place.
I was wrong.
It’s not fine.
We fight. We bicker. We taunt each other like it’s a brutal Olympic sport.
Tristan never wears a shirt and looks like my every sexy nightmare come to life, complete with perfect abs.

He was my secret crush growing up, but I’m not the little kid wishing for his attention anymore.
If we can’t keep our clothes on, we’ll both go down in flames. I’m addicted to how he makes my body feel. I can’t stop falling into his bed.

That line between hate and love? It’s looking pretty thin.
Now I’m wondering how either of us will walk away unscathed.

Incredibly entertaining and smoking hot story!
If You Hate Me was the best kind of dirty fun and I loved every second. Can a book catch fire because seriously, this baby was scorching! I loved getting to know Rix and Tristan and watching their hate banter turn into so much more. I loved the build, the sexual chemistry, and all the entertaining moments. I never wanted to put it down and read it way too fast because I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next. Rix and Tristan were everything. I loved the witty yet wicked barbs flying between them, the tension was palpable. However, I could see the cracks forming and I loved those moments shining through when you could feel the sweetness and playfulness between them. I loved the building feelings they were denying. When that tension between them finally spilled over… just WOW! I've read some hot books before but I swear I smelled smoke when these two got together. Beyond the sex, there was drama, pain, and emotional upheaval as they opened up and shared the issues they were dealing with and I liked how they worked through them. The humor was fantastic and I loved Rix and Tristan’s internal dialogue. This was filled with so many laugh-out-loud moments and I loved them all. I liked that it was dual POVs so I could get inside their heads and truly understand what drove them. I loved all the characters involved. I love how Rix found a core group of friends and the laughter and support they brought. I loved Tristan's teammates and their camaraderie, and how they brought the wisdom when needed. A lot of people were introduced and I can't wait to see who will get a story. I’m hoping Rix’s brother and Tristan’s best friend Flip gets one, this guy needs to work himself out! I love how their different relationships with Flip factored into the story and the complications it added. This was a super entertaining and addicting to read. I absolutely loved all the heat but even more than that, I loved Rix and Tristan coming together, opening up and being vulnerable, and getting to their HEA. It was the best!

It's NHL playoffs season, so a hockey romance is very timely. Helena Hunting popped my hockey romance cherry 10 years ago with Pucked, and I'm enjoying the beginning of the Toronto Terror series. Tristan and Rix were so good! Tristan is Rix's brother's best friend since childhood--and her biggest tormentor. When Rix finds herself in need of a place to stay, her brother offers her to stay with him and Tristan. Having been enemies for several years, living together places Tristen and Rix in close quarters--and attracted to each other.

I loved the push and pull between these two. As hard as they fought it, I loved when they finally caved and gave into their attraction. There was plenty of scorching heat between these two, but also humor, and tender moments that surprised them both. I loved watching their love story develop and grow.

The secondary characters were great, and I hope to see all of them get their own story/HEA. Connor Crais and CJ Bloom did a beautiful job narrating this story. Can't wait for the next book!

This crafty storyteller is one of my absolute favorites and I’ve eagerly devoured every romance of hers I could get my hands on. I have different opinions on this one, however. While I think it was meant to be angsty, for me it was just exhausting.

The constant mattress gymnastics were amusing at first (mortal enemies and hate mating at its finest), but then they went on and on to the point of being tiresome. It wasn’t until about 90% where there was any true emotional connection or vulnerability between the main characters, so what was supposed to be all turn on was more of a turn off for me.

I empathized with the brokenhearted little boy with mommy issues, but the grown man and famous hockey player, Tristan Stiles, who knew he was a jerk and continued to be a jerk, is someone I lost patience with eventually. He finally decided to fix himself (again, around 90%), but it was for Rix and their relationship, rather than for himself. This leopard’s spots were so deeply engrained and were displayed time and again, so it was tough to believe Tristan would really change.

The fact that Rix allowed herself to be repeatedly treated badly and kept taking Tristan back lost my respect for her character. It weakened her position as someone who had shaped herself from an insecure child into a strong, self-reliant, independent woman. She had hopes and dreams that were dangled in front of the reader, but little was done to follow up on them and we never got to see them fully be realized.

There are parts I liked and several places where Hunting's writing really shined. Rix's initial roommate situation was hilarious. I loved her group of girl pals (can’t wait for a story from Hemi) and the brotherhood between the hockey players. Rix's brother was a sometimes hilarious, cautionary tale, and I loved Tristan's relationship with his family.

I hate saying anything negative, but it's only fair to explain why this one didn’t work as well for me. I prefer Hunting’s other stories that are steamy while building an emotional connection between the main characters, characters that are layered, endearing, and relatable. But if you love reading erotica with a touch of romance, this one will be right up your alley, and I’m sure you'll love it.

Wowzers! I couldn’t put IF YOU HATE ME down! I’m always up for a new book for Helena Hunting, so I jumped at the chance to read and review this one nice and early and I’m so glad that I did! I read it both as an egalley and listened to bits of the advanced listener’s copy and both the ebook and audiobook were absolutely fabulous…the readers are amazing and Helena’s words were as captivating as always!

IF YOU HATE ME was hilarious, heartwarming and jammed full of sizzling spice! Rix and Tristan were such wonderful characters and I had so much fun seeing them go from hate to something much, much deeper…and their chemistry was off the charts! I loved their solo journeys, and also how they complemented each other. I loved seeing Rix become more confident in herself, uncover her passions, and find a sense of belonging...and Tristan. Oh boy! I was right there with Rix when Tristan was on her last nerve, but he won me over hard! It was a delight to see him grow, and I love, love, loooooved seeing him learn to realize his own worth. Gotta love self-aware main characters who know they have to work on themselves! ;)

There truly was so much heart in this story...and it definitely didn't cool the heat down at all. In fact, I'd say this is one of Helena's spiciest books yet and if you haven't perfected your spicy reader poker face...you might want to watch if you decide to read this one in public...especially if the audio is your format of choice! It's a scorcher and you will likely find yourself blushing. ;)

Now onto the rest of the fabulous cast of characters! One of my favourite parts of starting new series from Helena is meeting her delightful cast of characters...and she's once again created the most excellent group of side characters who I desperately want to read about. I loved Rix's growing group of friends, and loooooved all of the Toronto Terror players! If you look around online, you might just spot some hints on what's in store next for this series (*hint hint* look for IF YOU WANT ME)...and I am seriously so excited for what's next! I'm also just so excited for all of the potential in this series, and can't wait until more and more people have read IF YOU HATE ME so we can all discuss who we want to read about next! ;)

Overall, I absolutely loved IF YOU HATE ME! Enemies-to-lovers is one of my favourite tropes and I'm always a fan of brother's best friend...so this was right up my alley! I also adored seeing a sports romance set in Toronto from one of my favourite Canadian authors! It was so fun to see certain Canadianisms...and even hear some of them in the audio version, too. I highly recommend IF YOU HATE ME to anyone who loves spicy rom-coms that are high on the spice scale and pack some delightful heat, especially if you also love hockey romances! This is one that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon and I already can't wait to reread it! ;)

cw: child abandonment, food and financial insecurity, abandonment issues
When Rix finds herself homeless she temporarily moves in with her brother Flip and his best friend Tristan. Both are NHL players, but she and Tristan have a history of rubbing each other up the wrong way. As they become reacquainted, the verbal spats boil over into something more.
I ADORED this book. It was the perfect enemies-to-lovers spicy sports romance. I loved the pettiness of Tristan and Rix's squabbles in the early chapters (seriously, the drive to pick up her belongings was hilarious). The chemistry between them was INCENDIARY. I think what I loved most about Rix was her agency. She wasn't afraid to call Tristan out when he hit below the belt. Tristan was such a complex character, and even though he occasionally seemed to act a little mean when confronted, his POV definitely helped me to empathise with him. My heart broke for him on so many occasions, and I found myself rooting for both of them to open up. The intimacy was fun, inventive, and... SPICY. I love an MMC with a filthy mouth, and Tristan TRULY excelled with his*. But I also adored his sweeter moments and I loved how understanding and supportive he became once he understood Rix's food insecurities. The 'candy birthday' particularly resonated with me, and I loved that, even though he often struggled to voice his feelings, he showed Rix in other ways. I also loved how Rix stood up to Flip when he inevitably discovered what was going on, and how both Flip and Rix also made Tristan confront his own difficult past.
The supporting characters were all perfectly introduced and felt integral to the overall story. I can't wait to see if my predicted couples come to fruition (I REALLY hope so!) I loved Hemi and Hammer immediately and Tally's innocence was a lot of fun. I also loved meeting Tristan's teammates, especially Roman, and Dallas. It was difficult to like Flip a lot early on, but I got the feeling a lot was going on internally with him, and this was occasionally hinted at, so I look forward to seeing his journey. The team intervention was perfect, and Hollis and Ashish's one-liners were hilarious (c. 22 solidified my love of the team dynamic), and I loved that Roman gave Flip some home truths. The HH universe Easter eggs were perfect.
The final chapters left me flip-flopping between giggling, crying, swooning, and fanning myself. Poor Tristan and the Fuzzy Peaches took me out.
In a market saturated with hockey romances, Helena Hunting shows us how it's supposed to be done. She seamlessly fuses romance, and spicy chemistry with actual hockey knowledge and team camaraderie. No one does it better.

Since it's a rom-com with a theme of Hockey and people healing together, I loved the book amd Helena's writing, but I felt it was unnecessarily stretched to 450 pages. The writing was interesting and I'm looking forward to stories of the other players as well. Tristan has this lost boy and filthy boy vibe going for him and I love how Bea let's him to come to realizations and gives him that one final chance.
