Into the Deep Wood: The Witch (Into the Deep Wood - A (Slow Burn) Fantasy Romance Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 57 ratings

A Forbidden Forest…

When Valeria stumbles into the shadows of the Deep Wood, she crosses a line no mortal dares to tread. Captured by the Hag - a figure from nightmares who rules the forest with ancient magic - Valeria is forced into a life of dark servitude. Here, the very trees whisper secrets, creatures of shadow roam freely, and every breath feels like it might be her last.

A Reluctant Servant…

Bound to the Hag’s will, Valeria’s days blur into strange rituals and harrowing tasks that push her to the edge of endurance. The forest is both prison and puzzle, filled with spirits and chorts, beings that are neither entirely friend nor foe. In this bleak existence, she crosses paths with Marat, a hardened hunter whose own secrets run as deep as the forest’s roots. Though his motives remain unclear, his presence stirs something within Valeria - a reminder that survival, and perhaps even escape, may lie in unexpected alliances.

A Desperate Gamble…

The deeper Valeria sinks into the forest’s mysteries, the more she awakens a power within herself - one that could offer a path to freedom or lead her further into darkness. Breaking free of the Hag’s hold could unleash forces beyond her control, risking her life and the very soul of the Deep Wood. Caught between survival and a thirst for answers, Valeria must decide: will she remain a pawn in the Hag’s twisted game, or dare to defy her fate and become something the forest itself has never seen?

Polina Volkova grew up in the depths of beautiful Siberian forests, where the creepy crawlers of folklore and fairytales often felt just beyond the treeline.

This has profoundly influenced her writing with its vivid imagery that brings about a feeling of being a part of something magical, running into something terrifying, and being very lost in the woods without a cell phone. Her debut series, Into the Deep Wood, blends her lifelong ties with love, horror, and fantasy into a dark romantic fable.

In it, she explores the hardship of the human experience through the use of symbolism and fantasy creatures, a bit of undying love, and chilling moments of something

going bump in the night.

When not weaving her stories, Polina likes romance options in video games, insurmountable

amounts of black coffee, long walks on the beach, and side quests that get you some sweet

new armor.

I love a good dark fairytale retelling, and there were some promising parts to this story, but I struggled to get invested in the flat characters and kept getting dragged down by the slow plot. Some readers might not mind, but I won't be picking up the next in the series.

I am not a romance guy. I should be clear about that. Romantacy just isn't my cup of tea.

But I checked this out because I want to buy a book for my wife. She like romance novels, and I wanted to make sure the writing was good.

All I was expecting was decent quality.

    My expectations were wrong.

    The quality is beyond excellent.

First of all, the prologue is fantastic.

This author is so skilled at capturing your attention, and keeping it. Told in the style of an old Grims Fairy Tale, Valeria is such a well written MC.

She takes you along in this world, and you feel for her. You're here for the ride.

There's so much passion in this authors writing. It bleeds through the page. Or screen if you prefer, and it makes the story shine.

If you're a fan of just /good/ writing, check this story out. If you're a romantacy fan, you're in for a treat.

Do yourself a favor, and get this book.

I'm looking forward to my wife reading this. Seeing her happy is the best thing in my world, and I'm thankful to the author because she'll play a part in helping me make that happen with this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Gem of a Fae Horror Romance

This is a masterpiece that has become one of my personal favorites of the year.

We follow Valeria, lovable, trusting, well-intentioned, as she navigates a world full of more than one kind of monster. It's honestly rare for fantasy horror romance to get me, but this one had me glancing at the woods and side-eyeing old people. I loved each and every one of the characters, they're all expertly crafted.

The world-building is out of the world, unveiling a dark, menacing, yet beautiful world where love can still be possible. Writing is evocative, keeping you turning and turning, and Valeria's journey feels raw and transformative.

If you're looking for a story that will spook you and bring you joy at the same time, Into the Deep Wood is a must read.
