About the author

Tom Williams used to write books for business. Now he writes novels set in the 19th century that are generally described as fiction but which are often more honest than the business books. (He writes contemporary fantasy as well, but that’s a dark part of his life, so you’ll have to explore that on your own – ideally with a friend and a protective amulet.)
His stories about James Burke (based on a real person) are exciting tales of high adventure and low cunning set around the Napoleonic Wars. The stories have given him the excuse to travel to Argentina, Egypt, and Spain and call it research.
Tom lives in London. His main interest is avoiding doing any honest work and this leaves him with time to ski, skate and dance tango, all of which (before covid) he thought he did quite well. In between he reads old books and spends far too much time looking at ancient weaponry.
Tom’s blogs appear regularly on his website, https://tomwilliamsauthor.co.uk where you can also find details of all his books. You can follow him on Twitter as @TomCW99 or Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/AuthorTomWilliams).

- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseEnjoyed this book, though not as gripping as the rest of the series, it's well written, well researched, and an interesting story. New to the Spy business James Burke learns quickly from others. His skills improve in later missions, but he's adept at slipping into a setting and reading the people involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Historical Novel
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIn the Ireland of 1793, Wolf Tone and the United Irishmen seem to be advocating for peaceful means to extend the franchise and improve the lot of the Irish, but there are rumours that some of them favour a more violent approach. Enter James Burke, an English spy, with orders to infiltrate the United Irishmen and discover the extent of their plans.
While I’m a big fan of Tom Williams’ books, I don’t always read his Burke series because I find it hard to read novels set squarely in the period I’m currently writing about. This book is set far enough outside of that period for me, and I was interested in the Wolf Tone rebellion as it forms the background for one of my major characters.
I’m glad I gave it a try because it’s very good. The author manages the characterisation very well, drawing a believable portrait of the young James Burke, struggling at this point in his career between resentment at being used as a spy, and fascination with the nature of the work. The subsidiary characters are well-portrayed.
Late eighteenth century Dublin comes to life on the pages of this book, with its sharp contrasts between rich and poor. The author is particularly good at weaving the web of intrigue and there is a sense of growing menace as Burke is unwillingly sucked in to a murky underworld of political dissidents, rebellion, and the threat of a French invasion. The pace is good and the author manages to maintain a good balance between British and Irish perspectives. Above all, he keeps the story firmly rooted within the period and doesn’t fall into the trap of allowing later history to influence his treatment of the topic.
This is a well-plotted, well-researched novel and I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMr Williams writes clearly and Burke is an interesting character. This covers a part of history that I know little of and I feel. As though I have learned something. Not quite as good as the previous books as it all seemed to be a bit easy. I'm still looking forward to the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile read and a good addition to the Burke story.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book is set in a period of history that is little known, partly because it is complex and controversial. Tom Williams has steered what must have been a difficult path. Burke is both sympathetic to the majority of the Irish while being very clear that alliance with the French was treason. He also encounters the divisions within the British authorities.
It's shorter and less action-packed than the other Burke books but still has plenty of drama. As with the previous books, there is solid historical basis for the people we meet and even for the central event.
This is certainly a worthwhile read and a good addition to the Burke story.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGreat series of books. Can't wait to read the next one.
Love all the characters and the history on which the books are loosely based.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not one of the best
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI have enjoyed all the other Burke books but I could not get on with this one at all. Maybe it was because there was no obvious enemy but it was too mundane for me.
