"...flabbergasted ... by the magnitude (bigger than Our Bodies, Ourselves) ... the multi-media Gesamtkunstwerk ambitions ... the Joycean wordplay ... exuberant code-switching, diction-mixing, blending of disparate linguistic ingredients into previously unknown harmonies and cacophonies. Like Finnegans Wake or The Anatomy of Melancholy ... I look forward to dipping into it for years to come"--Christopher Miller, author of Sudden Noises from Inanimate Objects

"...not for the faint of heart."--READERS' FAVORITE

Suffused with scathing satire from cover to cover, this award-winning over-the-top "chamber novel" is a deeply unsettling, intellectually probing, neurotically supercharged, musico-graphically enriched psychological suspense thriller about the artfully revengineered conspiratorial undoing of a complacent, over-coddled, trust-funded teenage entitlement princess who is possessed of an eminently questionable code of ethics and morals. The book's anti-heroine is a beautiful young heiress, socialite, and sugar-daddy-seeking subdebutantilizer called Melody whose inheritance comprises an immense fortune amassed through shareholder investments in the world's largest employment recruiter: the multi-national temp agency behemoth known as the Pleasant Peasant Corporation. Insidiously sly on the uptake, Melody is quick to abuse her position of power for the purpose of tipping the inequitable scales of the socioeconomic system to her pecuniary advantage not only at the calamitous expense of those who are thousandfolds less privileged than she is but also to the grave detriment of rich and powerful sugar daddies who are, despite their lofty social standings, vulnerable to the sexual machinations she sets in motion by dint of her coquettish charms with an eye to beguiling them out of their monetary resources in conjunction with prickteasing them into granting her unmerited favors to advance her career. She is under the smug delusion that she has achieved her aims by exploiting what she perceives to be their Achilles' heels--i.e., their psycho-emotional impotence to resist her come-hither cajoleries. It is the age-old story of the filthy rich topfeeding from the pockets of the poor as well as that of the bewitching young seductress manipulating powerful older men to achieve her nefarious ends. In the course of a 36-hour timespan our star-crossed protag is slated to learn some rude lessons about life once the tables are turned in her disfavor, whence she experiences sharp vicissitudes of fortune and finds herself in the position of being bountifully force-fed outsized mouthfuls of a Reality Sandwich prepared in her honor by her disgruntled exploitees and their vigilous cohorts.

About the Author

Gary Lloyd Noland (AKA Dolly Gray Landon & Lon Gaylord Dylan) grew up in a crowded house shared by ten people on a plot of land three blocks south of UC Berkeley known as People's Park, which has distinguished itself as a site of civic unrest since the late 1960s. As an adolescent, Gary lived for a time in Salzburg and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where he absorbed many musical influences. Having studied with a long roster of acclaimed composers and musicians, he earned his Bachelor's in music from UC Berkeley in 1979, continued studies at the Boston Conservatory, and transferred to Harvard University, where he added to his credits a Masters and a PhD in Music Composition in 1989. Gary's catalogue consists of hundreds of works, which include piano, vocal, chamber, experimental, and electronic pieces; full-length plays in verse, "chamber novels," and other text pieces; as well as graphically notated scores. His "39 Variations on an Original Theme in F Major" for solo piano (Op. 98) is, at two hours duration (give or take), one of the most challenging (not to say voluminous) sets of piano variations in the history of the genre. His compositions have been performed and broadcast (including on NPR) in many locations throughout the United States, as well as in Europe, Asia, and Australia. He founded the Seventh Species concert series in San Francisco in 1990 and has, since, produced multiple concerts of contemporary classical music on the West Coast. Gary is also a founding member of Cascadia Composers, one of the premier composer collectives on the West Coast. Gary has taught music at Harvard and the University of Oregon. His musical scores are available from J.W. Pepper, RGM, Sheet Music Plus, and Freeland Publications. Six CDs of his compositions are available on the North Pacific Music label at: www.northpacificmusic.com. He has over 300 videos of his music and narratives available for listening on YouTube at: https: //www.youtube.com/channel/UCJt_eNyJqOZBErG9McQ51nA and https: //www.youtube.com/user/Geltschmerz and on Vimeo at: https: //vimeo.com/user25315384. As a writer, I should have the wherewithal to describe this book, but alas, they escape me! Outlandish and satirical, morose and excessive. The first few paragraphs had me chuckling simply for the words. It had me thinking of the 60's in California and the flee flowing pills, and how one would ponder in exuberance, the meaning of life within a petal of a flower.
I was unfortunate enough not to have sound on my computer, so I couldn't enjoy the links to the music in the book, but trust me, the words and drawings are enough for anyone to enjoy. I haven't seen anything like this in any other book I have picked up and I'm greatly pleased to have this in my library for it's uniqueness alone! Bravo to the author for this grandiose work!

Art is subjective, and a lot of reviewers love this book. I, however, did not. I am going to assume I just didn't 'get it'. This book is, in my opinion, an unbelievably pretentious hot mess. I couldn't make it through the book, and had to force myself to read enough to leave a review. With that said, the author did express a lot of creativity in the concept, which I thought was really cool.

Jagdlied is quite an odd novel, starting with its title. In German, jagdlied means, "hunting song," and that specifically refers to Jagdlied, which was composed in 1834 by Mendelssohn. Say hello to Jagdlied: a Chamber Novel for Narrator, Musicians, Pantomimists, Dancers & Culinary Artists by Dolly Gray Landon. This is a tale of Melody, a young woman used to a certain level of luxury who will do whatever it takes to maintain it including all sorts of naughty schemes. It is a story told in a very refined and peculiar fashion, in the spirit of a comedy of errors. While the flow of the narrative gets lost in the attempt at rich and elevated language, this is not without its charms. The wordplay can be exhausting. How often do you hear someone scolding you with the likes of this: "an unflinchingly rigorous, almost superhumanly self-denying, effort to assist thee in overcoming thine egregiously glaring moral inlackings, spiritual wanes, and intellectual deficiencies." That said, this "chamber novel" should appeal to plenty of fans for this sort of absurd humor.

"I want to start off by saying that I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more books by this author.
Has quite an interesting storyline. It was so nicely paced that I couldn't put the book down and managed to ""binge-read"" it well within a day.
The science fiction is believable and the story line is plausible and reverting. There are a few plot twists that make it that much more exciting. In addition, the characters are real and fun.

I really enjoyed it! Dolly Gray Landon has become my absolute favorite author. I recommend this book highly. "

This is such a brilliantly and subversively constructed satire. It's definitely not easily accessible to everyone and consists of a lot of over-the-top, flowery, wordy language. For example, one sentence reads, "Such was the seethingly abrasive and pernicious psychologic power of his scrupulously chosen words that they made his enemies imprevaricably clam up and run off with their tails atwix their legs." But this is all part of the masterfully crafted satire, and once you get hooked to the writing here, you get hooked. There's a lot of clever commentary in this book, and I'd recommend it!

It took me awhile to get in tune with the book, but once I stopped over thinking things, the flow came naturally. This is a rather intense read, melancholic, but entertaining. One minute the topic was disturbing, the next, I was chuckling at the humor. The book is full of wonderful illustrations which are thought provoking, much like the story itself.

I've never used the word tour de force in a sentence before and have probably never typed it. But in thinking about how to describe this novel, I had to reach beyond my normal vocabulary! You can absolutely trust that the reviews in the book's description are not hyperbole. It's like nothing I had ever read and I'm constantly consuming literature. This book is as delicious as anything you could possibly feed your mind.

Jagdlied by Dolly Gray Landon is a thriller novel unlike any other. Its words lead you on a journey that give a unique literary style I have not seen before. I was curious and lost within the pages immediately. The plot was complex. Dolly Gray Landon knows how to write in a way that peaks one's interest and holds it until the end. The language was a bit bigger than my normal reads, yet it was still a good read. Due to the level of content and words, I highly recommend it for adults only. Although, I can see young adults grabbing this book and hiding away to read it. There was a combination of styles poured into this book. They add to the flavor. Reading this book takes time, but it has so much to offer. Overall, this is a rich, fun, and one epic read.

I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
