- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen I first discovered this book, I thought it was going to be a typical 'How to get rid of a job you hate' instruction manual. Instead, I was very surprised to find something much more deeper than the usual fare.
This book is about how to deprogram yourself from society's conditioning so that you can live life on your terms, follow your dreams and be a agent of change in our world. The author goes to great lengths to explain how 'The System' can keep you from pursuing your dreams and what you can expect if you either submit to it or challenge it.
The System, in this case, is society's laws, customs, guidelines, rules, traditions, best practices, politics and values. Its influence is vast, pervasive, insidious, covering all areas of society (human relations, governmental, educational, religious & corporate institutions, popular culture, fashion, news and current opinion).
This System demands obedience, conformity and for its authority to go unchallenged. These values are forced fed to us the minute we are born until the moment of our death. It strongly encourages everyone to do the following:
*American Dream: birth. attend grade school. college. marry. get a big mortgage. have kids. work 40 years. shop, retire. die. If you don't follow this path, you risk being labeled (fill in the name here) and relegated to the fringes of society economically and socially.
*Church: Submit completely to: God/Jesus/Allah/Buddha/Zeus/Neo/Apollo and you will be allow in heaven. If not, your non-compliance ensures eternal damnation in the afterlife.
*School: be obedient. truth comes from authority. wait to be picked. be reasonable. stay within the lines. memorize this. pass these test. go to the next level. Or we will label you, flunk you and cast you aside.
*Work: get a good job. be very obedient. smile often. work long hours. the employee handbook is your bible. multitask. keep your head down. climb the corporate ladder. retire at 65. receive a gold watch. do otherwise and you will be immediately terminated. And The System and your peers will consider you a loser.
In and of itself there is nothing wrong with following these institutions or their ideals. If that is what you truly desire. The author persuasively argues that we are constantly sold this prepackage lifestyle throughout our lives complete with 'vanilla' values, norms, ideas, priorities and current opinions. *Spouses sold separately.
So this begs the obvious question. How do know if we truly believe something or been sold the beliefs we hold?
This is a great book for those who don't fit in, free spirits, original thinkers, open minded folks. dreamers, visionaries, superheroes, artists, designers and people who want to make the world a better place.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'd like to start my review for this book with a clip from another review by the esteemed Tom Butler-Bowden, author of the 50 classics series which are IMHO required reading for any thinker.
"Most books aim to change your life; Escape The System Now goes further, calling on us to question our very motives and purpose so that we truly have a life. Read it if you don't just want to be 'successful', or 'effective' in society's terms, but genuinely great."
--Tom Butler-Bowdon
I have respect for Butler-Bowden, having read through his first four "50 Classics." Look him up. Required reading. This book taps the same source and is promoted by T.B-B!! The source Joe Barnes is channeling is the source of a fully lived life. I look at it as HUMAN POTENTIAL OPTIMIZATION.
He begins with his story, and leads us through a simple, all too simple (but disciplined) approach to creating the life you want. Yes, you must be disciplined. You must put in work. You must be creative. You must think like a child with a beginner's mind! When you were young, you could be anything!!
You still can, within reason. Barnes is just now getting started and this is his first book but I can see a great potential in him as an author to capture and distill motivation into it's simplest form. This alchemy is more complicated than it looks! We want to complicate, we want to limit ourselves and believe our own excuses and stories that we replay over and over in our heads because --- Why???
Because the cubicle is comfortable. The dirty diaper is comfy, even though we're sitting in our own crap.
Slowly, we must venture outside of our comfort zones, and begin to dream BIG like we were kids.
When we can get comfortable with being unconfortable abd we can create a Vision and a Fulfillment that Joe has laid out in simple terms...we can reprogram our minds. Like Neo in the Matrix, we bend the spoon. Then, years later, when we are living closer to our dream-life of gratitude, we realize there is no spoon. But I'm getting ahead of myself and throwing in too many Matrix references.
Joe Barnes is a sensible guy from the U.K. that just happens to be Morpheus. Buy the book, follow the steps, and just do it.
All goals are achieved with determination and a roadmap. Here is the roadmap. 3 bucks, Kindle. Now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let your song write itself
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDo you want to live life on your own terms? In "Escape the System", Joe Barnes provides an engaging and radical manifesto for personal change. His lesson is stark but clarifying - if you don't become the author of your life, someone else is going to write your story. The system already has a default plan for you.
I'm reminded of the classic Ben Franklin adage: "most people die at 25, they're just not buried until they're 75". Joe makes a compelling case for taking a different path. When you put this book down, you'll be inspired to review your progress to date and live an increasingly authentic life.
The book is highly relatable, with pop culture references from Fight Club to the Matrix which will resonate with many readers. He surveys a gallery of pioneers who dared to carve out their own future. In the final chapters, he raises the philosophical stakes. He starts to speak of the power of letting go, of creating without regard to the audience, of "letting the song write itself".
As the late Steve Jobs observed, we can only connect the dots at the end of the journey. Now is the time to be bold and set out on the road.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Handbook for Greatness
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseEscape the System is really the ultimate guide to a life of freedom and greatness without being controversial. This book is right up there with Harry Browne’s How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World and Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. I find this book so inspiring that we are doing a book study on it. This book requires diligent study. I feel like it must be read like we read the Bible or any of the other holy books. By that I mean the student must be closely acquainted with this book by reading a section of it every day until she knows it like she knows her name. Knowing it means living it, experiencing it, practicing it, and doing the tasks even if they feel unusual or uncomfortable. It is compulsory reading for students, teachers and mentors and all those who value liberty.
