Just a Little Madness (The Brotherhood Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 522 ratings

Opposites attract and sparks fly, but can they be contained?

Member of Parliament, Edward Archibald, lives in constant fear of being discovered as a gay man and having his life ruined because of it. He has avoided scandal in every way possible…until his brother runs off with a married duchess and kidnaps Lord Selby’s son and heir. As Selby's friend, Edward is called on to help with the investigation by contacting his brother. There’s just one small problem: The mission means he’s been thrown into close quarters with the object of his desire, actor Martin Piper.

Martin Piper loves life and isn’t afraid to enjoy it to the fullest. He can’t help but draw attention to himself in everything he does, particularly when he’s paired with stodgy politician, Edward, as they work to reunite Lord Selby and his son. But Martin can only pay attention to one thing—his fascination with and desire for Edward. He adores the man at first sight and relishes the opportunity to crack Edward’s shell to get to the sensuality he knows Edward is capable of.

But their mission veers wildly off-course and seems destined to fail, especially when their conflicting ideas about desire and discretion prove how different they are.
Can they overcome their differences to complete their mission and enjoy an epic love story, or will passion drive them apart?

A tender and heartfelt gay historical romance.

PLEASE BE ADVISED: Steam level – very spicy! And yes, this is an m/m romance involving friends to lovers, second chances, and a single father, so if that’s not your thing, feel free to pass on this one.

Just when you think this is going to be the last in an exceptionally entertaining series, Merry Farmer throws hints that it ain't over yet, buddy. This one takes a while to get to that point but along the way it's another rip-roaring romance and chase through various parts of London and other English subcultures.

This time it brings together Edward Archibald (on the cover), whose brother Ian ran off with the wife of Blake Williamson, kidnapping the latter's young children along the way. After returning two of the children, Ian is still on the loose demanding a ransom (interesting terms) and the very provate and deeply closeted Edward is drawn into the melee.

Accompanying Edward is Martin Piper, an actor who first appeared in the previous book and whose acquaintance with Edward was spurred by a desperate move by the latter to seek sexual gratification in a dangerous way--from which Martin saves him. But Martin also falls instantly in love with Edward who is also attracted but cannot seem to get his head out of his nether regions to come to his senses about his preferences.

There are a lot of disheartening scenes in this book concerning poor Edward, but they are a logical set-up for what eventually turns out to be a wild goose chase on the part of most everyone involved. But at least we get a HFN segue into the next chapter (Just a Little Gamble), whenever that comes out.

This series continues, and without a doubt its a four tissue story. While set in the nineteenth century, the internal struggle facing LGBTQ folks through the 20th century reads true. I came out to my folks in 1972 and was sure the world was going to end. I've met women whose folks institutionalized them. In the 60s and 70 s. Brutal

This is a good addition to the series. Beware, this series needs to be read in order.
Characters are introduced sequentially and if you read them out of order you may not enjoy the story lines as you would otherwise. Start at the beginning and you'll be fine.

One thing never changes, the hope of a child to be loved!
I recently wrote a poem on this, as that was true in my case, I would go to hell and back if my father would just see me. One is prepared to change who you are, what you are and what you perceive it would take for your parents to just show you some manner of respect and only a bit of pride.
Unfortunately the opposite is most likely to be true, you later become so blunted and dull, that you are not only, not what they perceive as doing good but because you have become so sick of yourself that you think everyone sees you as they do.
But there is one thing that is true, true love won't care, you can be a chimney sweep or work with garbage, but if you are loved who cares.
The opposite is also true, you can be as bright as a star, but if people perceive you as dumb or not quite there, you can shout your I.Q. from the rooftop and nobody would care, only someone that truely loves you, would see you for what you truly are.
Love, see all, believes all, stand by you in good times and bad, but most of all will do anything for you.
Thanks for reminding us of this traits...

This book is part of a series, and while the primary couple is new, the major plot events will only fully make sense if you’ve read the previous books. In this installment, actor Martin and MP Edward are off on a treasure hunt to find a lost Egyptian relic in a props department to rescue a kidnapped heir, which sounds exciting, and kind of is, which is good, because the romance wasn’t a huge success for me.

Frankly, I had a few issues with Martin. Martin deduces early on that Edward is “gagging for it” (his actual words) and that he can use sex to get Edward to love him back (as he’s decided, after knowing the man for two days, that he’s in love with him). The way he constantly minimizes Edward’s very real fear of discovery -- in a time period where being discovered would mean social ruin and prison time-- by telling him huffily that “no one cares” and the way he thinks that playing with Edward’s inexperience is “fun,” and has no problem describing that inexperience, and what he’d like to do with it, to his friend and former lover, don't exactly add up to a likeable person. Also, he has a habit of using Edward’s repression as a get out of jail free card for his own bad behavior-- when he fails to confide important information in Edward, for example, Martin excuses himself by telling Edward that he’s only angry at him as a distraction from the physical chemistry, before telling him that he’s a “sexual coward." That’s gaslighting, and it’s not cool. Not to mention, he never once apologizes for his behavior after they reconcile.

Also, while the plot is interesting, I’m still not sure what to make of Martin and Edward abandoning their post in the middle of the dramatic denouement, which they completely, unashamedly do. So if you’re hoping for a resolution to the overall plot arc of the series, be forewarned that doesn’t happen in this book.

Overall, I’m torn: I was caught up in the events of the plot as they happened, and the writing style was fluid and easily readable, in spite of the rough edges provided by characters and storyline, so I’ll round this up to 3 stars out of 5.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Thrown together by fate these two set off on an adventure as prescribed by their friends of The Brotherhood.

They don't know each other well & must travel together. There may be intimacy but there is always a misunderstanding that will separate them.

Don't worry, they'll work it out, won't they??

The cruel treatment of Edward by his family and their friends will make you so sad. Edward is afraid of everything because of his choice in lovers. His relationship with Martin is fraut with peril. Blake and Niall are still trying to find Blake's son. Just a wonderful read.

The Brotherhood stories improve as we progress onwards. Sometimes the novels take a while to get going, because of setting the scene, but they soon get moving. Another great read.

A great improvement on the last book. More believable action and a definite increase in 'activity'. The heroes in this instalment, a comedic theatre star and a MP, bring out the best in each other, in their joint efforts to discover the medallion and trace the missing heir. While they find the medallion, they're unfortunate in not finding the heir. So on to the next episode!

Merry Farmer's Brotherhood series is a fantastic 'historic' read. Although focusing on a new couple with most of the books, it still has a running storyline with characters who continue to appear or appear as an ancillary character in a few books, building to getting their own story and often then come into a later book. The range of characters and the idea of a hidden quarter of safety in a homophobic era is cleverly written in a highly plausible way given known facts of the period.

I love all these novels, however it is a little frustrating to hear British coins referred to as American bits!
With just a few extra tweeks the novels would be perfect.
