5.0 out of 5 stars the very basics you’ll need to start tending to your personal financial situation
Financial Literacy for Beginners by A. J. Cameron is a short and simple guide to personal finance. As the title promises, it is for beginners, and literacy is also apt, as it suggests the very basics you’ll need to start your journey. In other words, you can’t get your financial house in order without starting to plan and budget, and to grasp the risk that credit cards carry.
But even if you already know the basics, it still includes some nice things for you. For me, it brought up various behavioral biases, and these were thought-provoking. It reminded me of things I’d wanted to learn more about, e.g. annual gift exclusions. And covered things I didn’t even know about, i.e. irrevocable life insurance trust, and what I’d often heard of, i.e. money market accounts. The automatic transfers from checking to savings is a good idea, though auto-transferring to investment accounts could be risky if you don’t heed all the book’s wisdom, e.g. revisiting the balance of your investment portfolio regularly.
Though it touches on ideas like debt avalanche versus debt snowball (in the context of debt repayment), and core versus satellite strategies (for creating a balanced portfolio), you’ll have to read another of this author’s books, which hopefully dive a bit deeper for non-beginners. But once you’re done with this book, you’ll no longer be a beginner.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2024I appreciated how this book was written as an introduction, but also included some specific terminology and lingo that I never heard of before. It was a quick, effective read, and made financial decisions and options easily digestible.
The book did gain some depth as it went on, delving into less of the nuts-and-bots (difference in retirement account types, for example) and more into lifestyle, empowerment, and overcoming setbacks. For many people, that type of advice will likely benefit them more than the specific differences between stocks and bonds, for example. And a section where the author poses hypothetical situations where people make certain financial mistakes—sticking with a sinking investment too long, for example—and then showing how they can recover was really beneficial.
I also did appreciate getting into some terminology that was new to me, even if the concepts were not. For example, “avalanche” vs. “snowball” ways of resolving debt were really insightful, and seeing the differences and why you might go about each, helped affirm my own choices. The author places a high premium on successes and how that behavior can motivate us further, which to me is an undervalued portion of financial planning.
If you’re looking for a high-jargon, deep dive into specifics of finance, then this isn’t the book for you. But if you overspend, have trouble keeping your books balanced, want to save but struggle, then Cameron offers a book that will help you in the short- and long-term.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2024Why would a man nearly 60, who spent many years as a full-charge accountant, read this beginner's book?
I graduated high school in 1982. Home economics class was how to cook a meal and make an apron. It taught nothing about managing your money, paying your bills, and still saving - not to mention being able to eat every day of the week!
While a person of any age will find this book very easy to read and understand, it is ideally suited for the young. Those about to leave the nest of their parents and enter the real world.
In simple, easy to understand terms, this book gives one a nice foundation from which to grow their financial life.
I highly recommend this book. It is well worthy of the 5-STAR rating!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2023Financial Empowerment: Mastering Personal Finances: Budgeting For Beginners by A. J. Cameron is a short read for those who want to empower themselves with healthy tips to gain financial freedom. I like how the book focuses on the positive aspects to make sure one can be free of debt while gaining the courage to make sure they can stay debt-free by making checklists, implementing habits, and changing one’s mind when dealing with money.
For example, one could track their income and expenses first with pen and paper to see how far away of getting to their financial goals. Thinking about paying off high interest debts is a must that you should focus on first. Always strive improve oneself with the goal in mind that you can be a success with money. Or one could look at ways to grow money while changing the attitude of oneself, always staying positive and always trying to envision how one can be in a good position of handling personal finances.
Overall, it’s a good, short read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2024A.J. Cameron deserves credit for writing a book that I would say covers most of the important realms of empowering one's self financially. Setting financial goals, managing debt, learning about investing, developing a mindset around money - it's all here. I was most interested in the sections on credit scores, personal loans, and how big economic trends can affect people financially. These sections were all useful.
The chapters are all concise - I would say too short - and well divided by topic. If there's an issue with the book, it's that the author could have put more effort into really explaining what all these topics entail. Many of the sections have just one or two sentences. Yes, it's a book for beginners, but Cameron could have easily provided more helpful information for the intended audience.
That said, I just read an article about how many Baby Boomers are living solely on Social Security. The piece went in depth about these people's struggles. It was eye-opening and sad, so again, I do appreciate Cameron's efforts to help people take control of their lives financially.

4.0 out of 5 stars A simple introduction
Financial Literacy for Beginners provides useful insights for those just starting their financial journey, but it does seem aimed at an American audience, which limits some of its relevance for international readers, like myself in Australia. A lot of the content was solid, but I found certain sections a bit too basic—focusing more on definitions rather than practical advice.
That said, the book does cover important topics such as debt management, saving strategies, and basic investment options for an American-based audience. If the author is going to sell to an international audience, they might benefit from removing American-specific content and keeping that in a seperate chapter to make the material more universally applicable.
Another thing worth noting is that while the book is clear and simple, it could have benefited from diving deeper into global financial strategies.
Overall, I’d recommend it for those looking for an easy introduction to personal finance, but some might want more detail depending on their location and knowlege level. For what it does, it's a good, straightforward guide that provides a solid foundation for beginners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful
I can't believe how easy and straightforward this book is to read.
I have been looking for something to help me in setting money saving goals and getting my financials in order for quite sometime now and this book definitely helped with it's easy to digest chapters that are sectioned into individual sections so that anybody can read and learn.
The book gave me excellent advice about managing debt, increasing savings and coming into my own by helping me create options in my own world of finance.
I have already begun to implement some of the plans and strategies this book has instructed me to do and I am already seeing benefits.
I honestly couldn't recommend this enough, a book about money and self care that says to pay yourself first. I have read this book multiple times just so i don't miss anything. Also I believe that people don't talk enough about the book covers themselves and this one is very charming.
