Kantan! Read Japanese stories like a native (Volume 1) Kindle Edition
Japanese is notoriously challenging, in particular the written language that learners can find difficult to understand, let alone master. Reading Japanese fiction requires knowledge in several areas: word order, verb tenses, vocabulary, and kanji, to name a few.
“Kantan! Read Japanese stories like a native” is a new series by J.D. Wisgo––translator of over twenty books and creator of Self Taught Japanese, a blog about learning Japanese––that aims to bridge the gap between studying Japanese and actually understanding real Japanese literature.
The first volume showcases “Paradise Island”, a story by Mimei Ogawa, an important figure of Japanese fairy tales. A group of wanderers hear rumors of an island abound with beautiful flowers that might be a place they can finally call home, and decide to travel there. But they soon learn that things that seem too good to be true often are…
In this first volume, “Paradise Island” is presented in several formats: English / Japanese (with explanations of the majority of words and expressions that appear in the story), English / Japanese, Japanese only, and English only. There are also mini guides on word order, verb tenses, and particles, employing passages from the story to further increase readers’ understanding.
Suitable for everyone from beginning to advanced readers, “Kantan! Read Japanese stories like a native: Volume 1” is recommended for anyone wanting to start reading actual Japanese stories, or enrich their understanding of Japanese fiction.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2023Although the author touts this as a story for beginners, it uses complex and literary vocabulary. The combination of difficult vocabulary while simultaneously over-explaining simple grammar is bad enough, and no furigana to boot.
