Review
Lisa Rose Wright, author of the Writing Home series of travelogue memoirs.
"Triumph over adversity. A gripping tale for animal lovers that will capture hearts and imaginations. I couldn't put it down."
Beth Haslam, author of the Fat Dogs and French Estates series.
"Such a beautiful book, a memoir written from a dog's point of view. It's beautiful, sad, emotional, and heartstring-tugging. A story that will make you well up - but also weep with joy later. The book fills in what happened leading up to Kat's new life in Portugal. It's very special, a lovely story, and a wonderful ending for Alyson, Dave and Kat. Magical."
Julie Haigh, Amazon Reviewer.
"Kat the Dog is a perfect meld of imagination and memoir. It relates the story of a young dog's journey from sad neglect to happiness in an uplifting tale of rescue and love. Alyson Sheldrake has depicted Kat's character beautifully and has written a delightful, warm-hearted, gentle book that will touch any reader's heart, but especially those who love dogs."
Valerie Poore, author of the Watery Ways and African Ways series of memoirs.
"The most uplifting animal memoir since A Street Cat Named Bob. This is the kind of read that causes hearts to ache, spirits to soar and souls to sing with joy.
Against the odds Kat battles for survival in a world that seems devoid of kindness, with only hope to cling to as she embarks on a perilous quest for a place to call home. With the open road finally behind her, Kat faces an even greater challenge - will she ever be able to shake off her deep-seated fear and uncertainty to embrace a new life founded on trust?
Alyson Sheldrake combines empathy and imagination to deliver a unique insight into the canine psyche. The result is an enchanting narrative which leaves the reader spellbound from beginning to end.
So much more than just another animal story, Kat the Dog is a tale of courage, compassion and, above all, unshakeable and unconditional love."
Liza Grantham, author of the Mad Cow in Galicia memoir series.

About the author
Alyson Sheldrake was born in Birmingham in 1968. She has always loved art and painting, although she found little time for such pleasures, working full time after graduation. Alyson joined the Devon and Cornwall Police in 1992 and served for thirteen years, before leaving to work in the field of education. She became the Director of Education for the Church of England in Devon in 2008.
Once her husband Dave retired from the Police, their long-held dream of living in the sun could become a reality. Alyson handed in her notice, and with her dusty easel and set of acrylic paints packed and ready to move, they started their new adventure living in the beautiful Algarve in Portugal in 2011.
She is now an accomplished and sought-after artist working alongside her husband, Dave, a professional photographer. Being able to bring their much-loved hobbies and interests to life has been a wonderful bonus to their new life in the Algarve.
Alyson is the former editor of Portugal Letter magazine, and a feature writer for the Algarve’s Tomorrow magazine. She is the author of the award-winning and popular Algarve Blog, and is also a keynote speaker at the Portugal Resident 'Living in the Algarve' conferences.
She is the author of Kat the Dog - The remarkable tale of a rescued Spanish water dog, and the Algarve Dream series of travel memoirs. Alyson was also the author/curator of the Travel Stories series of anthologies.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2023This lovely memoir from the voice of Kat the dog is a delightful take on an old theme.
We like to imagine the thoughts of our four legged friends, Alyson blended the believable dog behaviors with a wry sense of Kats imagined thoughts. The only issue I had was I thought Kat’s disapproval of some of the smells that I think she probably would actually love (she did get the rotten fish right!) were more of Alyson’s feelings than Kats!
A great story!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2024Love this book as it reminded me of my labradoodle izzy dog as her eyes were so expressionable as if she wanted to speak to us. Still miss her!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2024As someone who volunteers for dog rescue, this book is an encouragement. What a lovely story told from a unique point of view. Well worth your time.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2023At first glance, this story is charming. But, diving deeper in, there is misinformation and several concerning things.
This book is in the nonfiction section of books. So, unless Kat learned how to type and talk, there is no reason for the author to write this as if it were Kat’s words. As close as we can get to our furry friends, there is no way we can think like a dog. Do try to do so is presumptuous.
Even with all the vets and groomers Kat saw no one talked about Lyme disease or how to prevent it. Nor is it common knowledge for the humans in their country. After Kat got several ticks in the double or triple digits, no one tested her for Lyme, or “tick
fever” as they say in that country. When the author contracted Lyme she was treated with an antibiotic that is used for typhoid. She talked about one of the side effects which are nightmares. What she was not aware of was the more permanent and life threatening side affects of this antibiotic. There are safer treatments out there that are just as or more affective.
Eventually Kat gets to sleep in the author’s bed. Part of the story mentions that only the author and Kat sleep in the bed. Also as part of the story, the author is married and the husband and her seem to get along well. That husband and wife sleep separately is private and should not be shared as part of a story of a rescued dog. Because now it is common knowledge for everyone reading this book.
If this story is meant to be a draw for rescuing a dog, it is filled with misinformation. The likelihood of anyone finding a $4,000.00 dog to adopt just is not going to happen. A dog that had been abused as badly as Kat would not adapt so easily. Besides not being potty trained, she would not take so easily to a leash and would not allow a harness. She would not be comfortable in a house, if she had never been in one.
Finally, I find the practice of keeping chickens and rabbits as pets, then eating them all, highly disturbing and distasteful. “Should we have John or Mary for dinner tomorrow “ is just not within the realm of what I think is okay.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2024I completely enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves animals. It really speaks to the special, soul mate bond between a dog and their human.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2024Too violent in beginning. Nice that fog was rescued and life she had but the history which was made up didn’t need to be so violent. Could have been left unknown

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful read
I absolutely loved reading this book, after losing our first Spanish water dog, we adopted another who had been rescued, so reading this book was like an insight into our lives. A great read if you're thinking of adopting a dog, it makes you realise what a difference you can make.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful heart warming story !
I really enjoyed reading this book , it’s beautiful and heart warming ! It does have some sad parts but I think the happy parts far outweigh the sad parts and the book left me feeling happy when I got to the end . I like that it’s a real story and love that we see everything through Kats eyes as it’s written from her perspective , which means there are some very funny moments as we see things from her point of view when she doesn’t quite ‘’ get ‘’ what her humans are up to ! This book confirms that there is nothing quite like a dogs love , that they love us unconditionally and we love our dogs more than anything else ….. I think Kat really landed on her four paws when she found Alyson and Dave and although she had a terrible start in life she certainly ended up being one of the most lucky dogs ever ! She definitely has the best life and her forever humans and forever home are the best ! I love my little dog SO much and I’d like to think she loves me as much as I love her . Oh and I love the photos from the photo album …. It’s nice to see the pictures that go along with the story . All the pictures are lovely but I especially love the ‘’ chasing the seagulls ‘’ picture …. What an amazing photo ! I’ve probably waffled on for far too long but I honestly really enjoyed Kats story and lastly I’d like to thank Alyson and Dave for sharing with us their amazing life with Kat in beautiful Portugal ! Thanks so much !
