- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021Inside are thirteen short stories about (you guessed it) kidnapping.
I enjoyed almost all of the stories. Being an anthology with different authors and different kinds of stories, not every writer’s style is going to fit my reading preference. Still, it's an awesome book.
There were three standouts for me:
“Echoes from a Milk Carton” by Dillon. Nadine is a 911 operator. As you might guess, she gets a call during a kidnapping in progress. Oh, this one tore at my heart strings! The story does not go where I expected it to. Kudos to Dillon for surprising me.
“Pool Party” by McCorriston. This alien abduction story was my favorite of the whole anthology. Noah is the protagonist. I just wanted to reach into the book and yell, “Noah, if the birds suddenly abandon their tree nest, RUN!” The aliens are nothing like I’ve ever read before. They use sounds and undulations for control. (Cleverly, Noah’s birds are HUMMING birds.) McCorriston gives the aliens a unifying purpose, adding depth to the story. McCorriston describes them as if they’re some kind of (spoiler territory, I’m not saying) mated with a (spoiler). Super creative story!
“Mother is God” by Germany. I hope in real life there aren't delusional people like the kidnappers in this story, but I fear there are. “Mother is God” disturbed me and would have left me shaking in a corner if not for the hint of light Germany offers the reader at some point (no spoilers).
K is for Kidnap is just the right length. At only 240 pages, I breezed through it, and at only thirteen stories, the topic (kidnapping) never got old.
I read this story through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
