Slow Down and Enjoy the Ride Kindle Edition
“Maybe like the riders themselves, I didn’t want it to end.”
“No bravado, no posturing. As a beginner female cyclist, I loved this book.”
“How he had the nerve to get lost is mind-boggling; but gave him a colourful adventure.”
Is it possible to cycle 1,000 miles across Britain in 13 days and still find the time to slow down and enjoy the ride? Twenty years after riding from Land’s End to John O’Groats, Alistair set out with his friends to repeat the adventure and quickly discovered that times have changed. Bike computers have replaced maps and thousands of cycle paths now criss-cross Britain. It didn’t help that he now lives in Australia and spends more time on a paddle board than two wheels. With little training and a borrowed bike, he set off from Land’s End, determined to enjoy every moment. Faced with so many natural distractions, he soon began deviating from the plan. With many miles to cover, along remote tracks, these diversions came at a price and something had to break. Would it be the bike, the camaraderie, or Alistair’s inquisitive nature? Along the way, he survived heatstroke in Devon, went in search of a lady called Daphne and braved wild storms in Glasgow. After a swim in Loch Ness, he found time to enjoy a beer in one of the remotest pubs in Scotland. Everyone who travels across Britain has a story to tell. This is Alistair’s. If you like travel books, you’ll enjoy this inspirational story, which shows that with luck, curiosity and perseverance, anything is possible.

About the author

Alistair always had a yearning for adventure but rarely travelled far and wide. This all changed one winters day, when General Motors decided to close the factory gates. He took the payout and grabbed the chance to finally travel the world.
He grew up in suburban Luton (a large cosmopolitan town 30 miles north of London) where childhood adventures required a vivid imagination and often involved garden hopping, knock up ginger or scrumping. Family holidays were spent in Donegal, staying with his Grandmother in their large family home where she had once raised fifteen children.
It was these annual trips that first made Alistair realise that his Great Uncles were Seanachaís (Irish story tellers).
After a few pints of Guinness, twin brothers Great Uncle Barney and Francis would enthral visitors with their recitations of life in the North West of Ireland. Alistair still remembers these magical evenings and now enjoys telling stories of his own.
48 countries and four decades later, Alistair now calls Australia home. He lives between the beach and the forest with his wife, 2 young boys and an adorable dog, called Peppi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do as the tittle says.
Having just finished Alastair's latest book, on his second journey on LeJog with his trusty companions, cycling the length of our beautiful country. Once again, I was on his bike, enjoying all the bumps, heartaches, and diversions along the way. A thoroughly enjoyable, and informative book about our country, whilst Alastair peddles on, and tries to "Slow down and enjoy the ride"! Where next Alastair?

4.0 out of 5 stars A good if sentimental LEJOG journal
I am a sucker for cycle travel journals and this one didn’t fail me. I can fully appreciate Alistair avoiding a bike computer/Garmin but I could have done with a few maps of the route taken.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm glad I wasn't part of Alistair's group
Strange as it may seem, I enjoyed the book.
But I'm left wondering two things.
Firstly, why did Alistair go on the cycle with the group at all? He appears to have had naff all consideration for the rest of the group.
Secondly, how did he make it to the end without being bumped off by one of the others? He was an absolute hindrance to the group. I lost count of the number of times someone pulled him aside and said "Ali, don't take this personally but ....." Each time to no avail. He still was late, grumpy, unhelpful and rowed against the group dynamic.
I don't want to be overly harsh, but Alistair came across as being totally self centred. I really wouldn't want to go on any sort of a cycle in his company.
