About the authors
I started writing as an antidote to empty nest and soon found it an antidote to life in general. I am the sixth out of seven children, and was raised in the rural surrounds of central Pennsylvania. Early in life I spent a lot of time reading romance novels and practicing the piano. My first career was as a technical writer and editor in the Washington, DC, area, a busy profession that nonetheless left enough time to read a lot of romance novels.
It also left enough time to grab a law degree through an evening program, produce Beloved Offspring (only one, but she is a lion), and eventually move to the lovely Maryland countryside.
While reading yet still more romance novels (there is a trend here) I opened a law practice, acquired a master's degree in Conflict Transformation (I had a teenage daughter by then) and started thinking about writing.... romance novels. This aim was realized when Beloved Offspring struck out into the Big World. ("Mom, why doesn't anybody tell you being a grown-up is hard?")
I eventually got up the courage to start pitching manuscripts to agents and editors. The query letter that resulted in "the call" started out: "I am the buffoon in the bar at the writer's retreat who could not keep her heroines straight, could not look you in the eye, and could not stop blushing--and if that doesn't narrow down the possibilities, your job is even harder than I thought." (The dear lady bought the book anyway.)

- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2019My personal impressions & opinions about the story at the beginning, Novella #1 aka
"Lieutenant Mayhew's Catastrophe" as told to us by Author Emily Larkin.
Please, take a few moments looking back to several of your worse days ever!!! And isn't it ridiculous about the myriad of things that may possibly go sideways in just a day? You're starting to remember about when anything and everything that could possibly go wrong —DID! If you drive any distance regularly you have just begun seeing that it's placing undue stress on your vehicle and you need to take it in so diagnostics may be run. Or how about the day when you got a flat tire & needed the car moved over into the break-down lane and had to wave for help to do so! All while in your fresh from the Dry Cleaners dress/suit combined with new shoes that won't give you any traction. Then another day you remember that oil & water don't mix and that just the drizzle & fog has caused the oil to the road's top surface. And yet, about only 1/2 of the other drivers seem to recall that fact and there are those who are zipping around you and the rest of those who are cautious.
Or when you, as a big city dweller, and so many others are at the mercy of "Public Transportation". Encompassing Buses, the Subway and/or above-ground Trolley systems or the actual Railroad itself. Any or all of whom are subject to delays. Whatever the cause, you are now late for your work, or an appointment, a committee meeting, interview or presentation. Then someone hurrying by you literally "runs-into" you and now you're walking with a large wet stain on your clothes!
Could this day become even worse?? So you take a few brief moments to assess what the atmosphere is like. You quickly realize that the ambiance seems as though it may ignite at any time. Now, you too feel the terrible tension which furrows your brow and leaves you on edge. Then you take a deep breath and firmly resolve this will not shake either your confidence or equilibrium.
And you remind yourself that this is "TGIF" before a mandatory national 3-day weekend. You're expecting some of your best friends visiting and staying a few days. You had the foresight to already have two(2) vacation days approved for next Tuesday & Wednesday. The weather is now superb and you inwardly laugh at yourself because you have fantabulously tremendous recent personal news that's known only to you and one(1) other. The big reveal is: That both of you are "soul mates" with a connection that constantly hums across the time you're apart and is simply electric and undeniable together. Neither of you had been certain this sense of completion really was attainable even while in depths of your heart and soul you knew it was possible. You truly "cherish each other" while realizing what a rare & precious gift you are receiving!I
And now my feelings and remarks concerning the 2nd story in this small tome, Novella #2 aka
"Catnip & Kisses" as penned by Author Grace Burrowes:
Grace has actually managed to write the most "un-formulaic" tale I've had the pleasure to "purr"use! What I will tell you now is "meow"r about it. For instance, the way your heart will "cat"ch itself on this delightful "tail"! And how you won't have a "lick" of trouble enjoying this tiny tome. Here are some small "bit"s of information as follows: An amateur volunteer Librarian meets a "curious"ly fanciful a"tip"ical Scholar of scientific "purr"suits! You'll wish to "scoop"-up this hysterically humorous "tidbit" of a "hiss"torically themed "yarn".
Particularly with the sudden "nip" in this autumnal air. I almost "cat"erwauled when this perfect set of novellas reached their conclusions. In this case I wanted them both to carry-on for a much "fur"ther time than when the official, "The End" was reached!
P.S. I ask y'all to please allow this quirky older reviewer a bit of latitude for these tongue-in-cheek reviews.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2020This is a nice pair of sweet Regency romance novellas, one by Emily Larkin and the other by Grace Burrowes. Both novellas are sweet, with likable couples, but they do contain love scenes (not very explicit, though). This set of novellas gets 4 stars from me, which is unusual, since I usually don't think novellas have enough character development.
Lieutenant Mayhew's Catastrophes, by Emily Larkin: This is such a sweet romance. The couple is perfect for each other, and they are both so very likable. She is sweet and very easygoing in the face of all the little catastrophes they face, and he is a kind, protective gentleman. They are good together, and I loved their story.
Kisses and Catnip, by Grace Burrowes: This is also a sweet story, but the couple had a few problems to overcome before they could be together. Someone lies to him about her, which leads him to think poorly of her -- so he ignores her for a while, which hurts her deeply. They also have to deal with the machinations of someone who wants to marry her for her inheritance -- but it is sweet when they do find their HEA. This story is a little heavier than the first one, simply because of the problems they face, but I still enjoyed it.
My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2019The Lieutenant and Willie meet on a stage coach. He's on leave bringing kittens to his nephew and niece and she's on her way to meet her employer and then on to Vienna. Both characters were well written, extremely likable, down to earth, confident in themselves and genuinely like each other. I wanted Emily Larkin's story of Lieutenant Mayhew and the wonderful Willie to go on and on. I would love to read about their first years' of marriage, travels/adventures, children, growing old together!
If you enjoy Grace Burrowes, you'll enjoy this novella. Max is a scientist who is a bit eccentric, caring of cats and stray children and of a pretty librarian. Antonia wants more than balls, afternoon social visits and her cousin's insipid marriage proposal. She volunteers at a library hoping for a permanent paying position (although she doesn't need the job). There's a pushy not-quite-a-villain, a misunderstanding, characters from previous books - standard Burrowes.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2019The first short story is of two strangers traveling on a stage coach, the young man carrying two kittens and the young woman going to a new job. They find they have much in common after missing the coach at a stop. Thus their adventure begins. A sweet story. Fun characters.
The second story involves one of my favorite characters from a previous story, Lady Antonia, who meets the youngest Haddonfield. (The Haddonfield's also were in previous books.) You don't have to read the others in order to enjoy this story, but it did add to my pleasure. This story also featured cats, a young boy, two old ladies, a villain and some old friends.
I am a fan of both authors and I really enjoyed reading both of these well written novellas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great combination
I like all of Emily Larkin's books, and this novella didn't fail. Great characters as always.
I was also pleased to discover an author I'd not read before, but I will be looking for more from Grace.
I received an ARC for free, and this is my honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two cat-astic romances!!
The first was definitely my favourite; I just adored Willie and Mayhew (Will). Their tale was a sweet, tender, witty romance full of endearing moments that made me smile, laugh out loud and sigh with pleasure! A tale born from happenstance and misadventure, two adorably oppositely natured kittens, a cycle of mishaps and mini 'Kitten-astropes', one charismatic, fun loving gentleman lieutenant and one easy going, up for adventure, miss who likes nothing more that experiencing everything life has to throw at her, head on with a smile on her face and a laugh in her heart - no matter the discomfort or hardship.
A well crafted read that flows fluidly, entertains fabulously vibrant and colourful characters, is dazzlingly heartening and oozed so much warmth and good natured fun that I didn't want it to end!!
I equally liked the premise of the second tale; Burrowes set the scene well and sucked me in effortlessly. The character's were well established, both Antonia and Max are intelligent yet misunderstood people who ultimately just want to be loved for who they are inspite of their passions whether that lies in books or science. In addition, the sub characters, especially Dagger, added weight, levity and humour.
Resulting in an overall enjoyable read where Antonia and Max are easy to like as people and are relatable as their connection blossoms from craving to love. It's just a shame the story seems to end a little too quickly and abruptly for me but well-worth the read nevertheless as it really has the power to make you smile, laugh and empathise!!
A duo of unlinked tales that I would highly recommend for their sense of fun and mesmerising characters alone!!

3.0 out of 5 stars 1st story great 2nd a disappointment
1st story (Scored - 4) a delight. Lieutenant Mayhew's Catastrophe- This story was witty, fun, endearing and a thoroughly great read. H and h were characters that from the beginning were inspiring to read and gave you optimisuim in their adversity. 2nd story (Scored - 2) Started great but as I kept reading it, it became a disappointment. Alert part of story alert. How is it h can say No to an Earl but not No to her cousin??? I stopped ready before chapter 6 (that was a push to do)and picked up again mostly through chapter 6 where the paragraph starts with the word 'Smiling' (couldn't tolerate anymore), and valla, guess what, I was up to date and missed all the rubbish in between.
Must admit the story idea was fabulous a shame it jumped into the sex scene shortly after H met h. Then h dismissed H because she couldn't say no to her cousin even when her Butler advised what the cousin was like just so the author could add in the plot. Not well done.
